Google Play Points rewards eligible purchases made through Google Play after you join the program. Your earning rate, level thresholds, and available benefits depend on your Play country. Two rules are easy to confuse: your spendable points balance expires after a year without earning or using points, while points already earned toward your level are not removed when you redeem them.
How do Google Play Points work?
After joining, you earn points on eligible purchases made through Google Play with the enrolled Google Account. Purchases made before you joined do not count. Depending on your country, eligible purchases may include apps and games, in-app or in-game purchases, subscriptions purchased through Google Play, and books. Not every type of content qualifies in every country.

Google calculates points from the item price before taxes, applies your current base rate, and rounds the result to a whole point. A regional minimum may mean a purchase earns no points. Promotions can temporarily increase the rate for selected purchases, so the amount earned may differ from the standard rate shown for your level.

For example, Google’s US guidance says a $5 purchase at the Silver rate earns 6 points, rounded from 5.5. That example illustrates rounding; it is not a universal rate or a guarantee that every $5 purchase qualifies.

How many Google Play Points do you earn per dollar?
The answer depends on your Play country and current level. The following figures are Google’s published United States example, with rates stated per US dollar. Google says rates and award levels vary by country.

These are US terms, not a global schedule. To see the rate that applies to your account, open the Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then tap Play Points and Earn. That section also shows available promotions.

What are the Google Play Points levels, and how does progress work?
Google’s US example has five levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Points earned during a calendar year count toward reaching the next level. When you reach a level, Google says you keep it through the end of the following calendar year. At the start of each calendar year, Google may adjust your level based on the points you earned in the preceding year.

A returned or canceled purchase that earned points is different: Google deducts the points from both your balance and your level progress.

When do Google Play Points expire?
Your points balance expires after a year without activity: Google says points expire one year after the last time you earned or used points. Earning or using points restarts that inactivity period. Redeemed points are deducted from the balance, so check the expiration date displayed in your account rather than relying on a remembered date or a tier calendar.
This balance-expiration rule is not the same as the annual level cycle. Points do not leave level progress just because you redeem them, and reaching a level has its own calendar-year retention rule.

How to check your balance, expiration date, history, and benefits
- Open the Google Play Store app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Play Points, then Use to see your points balance and its expiration date.
- To review points earned from purchases or points used, go back to Play Points, tap More, then Points history.
- To review your level benefits, open Play Points, tap More, then Level benefits.
Who can join, and what happens if you change country?
Google Play Points is not available everywhere. Joining requires living in a supported country and having a billing address that matches that Play country; Google also lists account and device eligibility conditions. Eligible purchases, earning rates, levels, and benefits can vary by country, so the US figures above may not match what you see.

What to check before making a purchase for points
- Confirm you have joined Play Points with the Google Account you will use to buy.
- Check whether the item or subscription is eligible in your country and is purchased through Google Play.
- Look at your current base rate and any promotion in the Play Points Earn section.
- Check the purchase amount before taxes and whether a regional minimum applies.
- After earning points, use Points history to confirm the award and Use to monitor the balance and expiration date.
