Will your game still work when its servers shut down? It depends on the game, platform, edition, software version, account, and what those servers do. Some games keep their campaign or local multiplayer but lose online features; others become unplayable. Check the publisher’s notice and test the specific version you own while its services are still available.
How to check a specific game
- Find the publisher’s official notice. Search the publisher or platform support site for the exact game name plus “server shutdown,” “online services,” or “service update.” Match the platform and region, since similarly named editions can differ. Check the page’s update date and revisit it near the announced shutdown: 2K says retirement dates may move and its status page is updated as plans are confirmed. 2K’s online services status page
- List the features you care about. Check launch and authentication, campaign progression, multiplayer, local co-op, saves, DLC, store and currency, user-created content, leaderboards, and social features separately. A shutdown notice may retain some and remove others.
- Check for server requirements beyond multiplayer. Look for “always online,” required internet access, launcher sign-in, account linking, license validation, periodic check-ins, or a required companion app. A campaign that is designed for offline play can still fail if the game must authenticate with a server that is no longer available. - Test while the service is available. Install current updates and follow the publisher’s documented offline instructions. Disconnect the network, then try a fresh launch after closing the game, load a local save, and test each mode you rely on. Record the platform, edition, game version, account state, and results. A successful test describes that setup at that time; it cannot guarantee future access if authentication services, check-in rules, or game updates change.
- Check saves, purchases, and transfers separately. Find out whether saves are local or cloud-only, whether DLC is downloaded, whether creations are stored on your device, and whether a conversion tool or transfer deadline applies. Virtual currency and inventory can have different outcomes from offline play.
- Keep the notice and protect local saves. Save a copy or note of the official notice, dates, and test results. Back up local saves using the platform’s supported method where available. A backup cannot restore server-hosted systems, online inventory, or authentication.
What shutdown notices can mean in practice
Publisher examples show why a shutdown announcement alone is not enough to tell whether a game remains playable. Check the specific title and platform notice rather than assuming all games from one publisher—or all modes in one game—will be treated alike.

An offline successor may be planned
On September 28, 2026, Bandai Namco said SYNDUALITY Echo of Ada’s online service would end after May 2027 and announced development of a standalone offline version with some online functions removed. The company said some save data and designated purchased items were expected to transfer, while the transfer details were still pending. Its notice listed local-save transfer as scheduled for December 2026. A game may keep some modes and lose others
Epic Games’ December 14, 2022 notice said most affected older games would remain playable offline, while some would not. It identified retained single-player or local multiplayer modes for specified games and said Battle Breakers would become inaccessible. Epic Games’ service notice

PlayStation says the inFAMOUS 2 and inFAMOUS Festival of Blood campaigns remain playable after their user-generated-content servers close, but online user-created missions disappear. It says GUNS UP! requires online access and will no longer be playable after service termination. Retirement dates and offline modes are title-specific
2K’s status page lists retirement dates and offline modes for individual games and says dates may be extended or brought forward. As of its September 14, 2026 update, it listed NBA 2K27 online services as scheduled through December 31, 2028, with Play Now, MyNBA/MyLeague/MyGM, 2KU/Learn 2K, MyWNBA, and The W among the offline modes. Offline access does not settle what happens to items
EA says some games may remain playable offline after online services end, but whether virtual currency or inventory remains usable depends on the game and the retired service. EA also says older games’ player numbers typically dwindle to fewer than 1% of peak online players across all EA titles before maintaining their online service is no longer feasible. That is EA’s stated rationale, not an independent industry-wide shutdown statistic. EA’s Service Updates page

What an offline test can and cannot tell you
A test can establish whether a particular installed version, on a particular platform and account, launches and runs selected modes without a network at the time you test it. It cannot prove that future versions will behave the same way, that a periodic license check will never occur, or that a publisher will preserve the authentication service. An offline mode label alone does not answer those questions.

A physical disc or downloaded installer is not proof of independence from servers: authentication or core gameplay may still depend on an online service. Nor does a multiplayer shutdown automatically mean the campaign or local play is gone. Use the title-specific notice, the dependency checks, and your own recorded test results to determine what is established for the copy you own.
