How to Reduce Motion Blur and Improve Performance in Racing Games

Start by separating two different problems: turn off the racing game’s own Motion Blur, Camera Blur, Radial Blur and Depth of Field effects, then configure a stable refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR) and frame-rate cap. If the image is still smeared during fast panning, the remaining blur may come from the monitor’s pixel response and sample-and-hold display behavior rather than from the game. A repeatable baseline on the same track or replay lets you improve clarity and frame-time consistency without trading away more image quality than necessary.

What kind of blur are you seeing?

Racing games commonly combine two sources of softness. The first is an effect rendered by the game. Motion Blur, Camera Blur and Radial Blur add a simulated streak during camera or object movement; Depth of Field deliberately softens areas outside a focus distance. These effects are calculated as part of the frame and can usually be disabled in the graphics menu.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The second source is the display. A conventional sample-and-hold LCD or OLED keeps each frame visible until the next refresh. During a fast pan, your eyes track the moving car or scenery while the pixels remain held, so the image can appear blurred even when the game’s post-processing effect is off. Slow pixel transitions can add another layer of smearing. NVIDIA’s display guidance treats this as a separate problem from the game’s render effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because a faster graphics card will not completely remove sample-and-hold blur, and a 240Hz monitor will not stop a game from drawing a large artificial blur pass. Diagnose the symptom before changing hardware.

Fine detail shimmers or trails behind cars after enabling an upscaler Temporal reconstruction or upscaling artifacts Try a higher-quality mode, a different supported upscaler, or a less aggressive internal-resolution setting.

Establish a clean baseline before changing settings

Randomly toggling options makes it impossible to tell whether a change improved blur, frame rate or both. Use one repeatable test: the same track, weather, time of day, camera view and replay section. Record the following before making changes:

  • Output resolution and the game’s selected display mode.
  • Monitor refresh rate and whether G-SYNC, FreeSync or another VRR mode is active.
  • Average FPS and, if the game or overlay exposes it, 1% low FPS.
  • Whether blur appears only during camera or car movement, or also in static menus and replays.
  • Any visible tearing, hitching, ghosting or shimmering.

Change one setting at a time and repeat the same section. A high peak FPS number is not evidence of smoothness if frame times oscillate. A stable 90 FPS can feel cleaner than a sequence that jumps between 70 and 160 FPS, because the display receives frames at more regular intervals.

Turn off blur generated by the game

Disable the obvious effects first

  1. Open the game’s Settings or Options menu.
  2. Go to Graphics, Video or Display.
  3. Set Motion Blur to Off. If the game offers a strength slider, use zero.
  4. Set Camera Blur and Radial Blur to Off or Low.
  5. Set Depth of Field to Off if you want the clearest replay and cockpit view. It is a focus effect rather than the same streaking effect, so you may prefer to keep it on at Low.
  6. Apply the changes, restart the game if requested, and drive the same test section.

Motion blur can be an intentional design choice. NVIDIA GPU Gems describes it as especially useful in racing games because it increases realism and the sense of speed. Turning it off gives you a sharper, more analytical image and may reduce rendering work, but the performance gain varies by title, graphics API, resolution and hardware. Do not assume a fixed percentage improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep anti-aliasing under control

Anti-aliasing is not motion blur, but temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) can make a moving image look soft. Keep enough anti-aliasing to prevent shimmering on fences, kerbs and trackside wires, then compare the game’s lower TAA option with a supported upscaler. If the title provides a sharpening control, use a small adjustment and check for halos around signs and car bodywork. Excessive sharpening can turn fine detail into flicker.

Recover FPS while preserving image quality

When the game cannot hold your target frame rate, reduce settings in an order that usually has less impact on the final image than dropping output resolution immediately. The exact cost is title-dependent, so verify each change on the same test section.

Lower expensive effects before native output resolution

  • Ray tracing: disable it or move to a lower preset first. Reflections, global illumination and shadows can be particularly costly in a racing scene.
  • Reflections: lower quality or update frequency if the game exposes those controls. Wet tracks and vehicle mirrors can consume substantial GPU time.
  • Volumetric effects: reduce fog, clouds, smoke and light shafts when they are available as separate options.
  • Shadows: lower resolution, distance or contact-shadow quality before changing texture quality.
  • Crowd and object density: reduce spectators, debris and trackside detail if the CPU is the limiting component.
  • Textures: reduce this only when video memory is close to full; texture quality often affects memory use more than frame rate when there is headroom.

After every adjustment, look for the side effect that matters in a racing game: shimmering on barriers, reflection pop-in, ghosting behind the car, or a sudden loss of cockpit detail.

Use an upscaler deliberately

DLSS, FSR, XeSS, TSR and Windows Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a higher-resolution output. Microsoft describes this approach as a way to avoid choosing strictly between visual quality and frame rate. Select a Quality mode first; move to Balanced or Performance only if the frame-rate target still cannot be met.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check three areas after enabling an upscaler:

  • Trackside geometry: inspect fences, guardrails and power lines for shimmer during a pan.
  • Moving cars: look for ghost trails, unstable rear wings or softened brake lights.
  • Interface and text: confirm that HUD elements remain crisp and correctly aligned.

Auto SR availability depends on the Windows version, game, GPU and system configuration. Use it only when Windows and the game identify the feature as supported. If artifacts are unacceptable, return to the previous mode and lower a more expensive effect instead.

Set the monitor’s refresh rate correctly

Refresh rate is the number of display updates per second. Microsoft notes that a higher refresh rate can reduce perceived motion blur and screen tearing. It does not create additional game frames, but it gives the display more opportunities to show them and shortens the time each frame is held.

Choose the highest stable rate in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Select the monitor you use for racing.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. Choose the highest refresh rate that the panel, cable and current resolution support reliably.
  5. Confirm that the game is using the same monitor and resolution.

If a high mode causes black screens, signal dropouts or intermittent flicker, step down to the next stable setting. A reliable 144Hz mode is preferable to an unstable advertised maximum. Check the monitor’s on-screen information panel or a trusted overlay while the game is running; the Windows selection alone does not prove that the game is presenting at that rate.

Enable VRR and verify that it is working

Variable refresh rate (VRR) allows the display to adapt its refresh timing to the game’s output. G-SYNC, FreeSync and compatible adaptive-sync implementations can reduce tearing and make uneven frame delivery less conspicuous, provided the game remains within the monitor’s supported VRR range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows and monitor checks

  • Enable adaptive sync in the monitor’s on-screen menu if the panel requires a separate switch.
  • In the GPU control panel, enable the vendor’s VRR mode for the racing game or display.
  • Use the game’s exclusive-fullscreen or borderless mode according to that title’s VRR behavior; some games handle one mode more reliably than the other.
  • Verify operation with the monitor’s refresh readout or a frame-time/VRR overlay. Look for refresh rate changing with FPS rather than remaining fixed at one number.

On Windows 11, Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Optimizations for windowed games can improve presentation for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 windowed or borderless games. Microsoft says the optimization uses a flip-model presentation path, reduces frame latency and enables VRR-related features where supported. It is not a universal fix for every title, so compare behavior with the setting on and off if a particular game becomes unstable.

Assign the game to the intended GPU

On a system with integrated and discrete GPUs, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or browse to the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save. Restart the game after changing the assignment. Confirm in the game’s diagnostics or GPU overlay that the intended adapter is rendering; otherwise, refresh-rate and quality adjustments may appear ineffective because the wrong GPU is limiting performance.

Cap FPS for consistent frame times

Once VRR is active, set a frame-rate cap that the system can sustain inside the monitor’s VRR range. Use the game’s limiter when it is accurate; otherwise use the driver control panel. NVIDIA’s Max Frame Rate control is designed to limit output, reduce latency in some situations and keep frame rates within a chosen VRR range.

  1. Measure the frame rate on your heaviest track section, not only on an empty straight.
  2. Choose a cap below the monitor’s maximum refresh when necessary to avoid repeatedly hitting the ceiling. Leave enough headroom for weather, traffic and crowded starts.
  3. Apply the cap and repeat the same test. Watch frame-time consistency, not just the average FPS.
  4. If the game still falls below the cap, lower a GPU or CPU-heavy setting rather than raising the cap.

A 90–120 FPS target is a useful example for many systems, but it is not a universal requirement. The correct value depends on your CPU, GPU, resolution, game and monitor’s VRR window. A cap that is comfortably sustainable usually feels smoother than an uncapped result that repeatedly swings between low and high values.

Understand backlight strobing and ULMB

Backlight strobing flashes the backlight briefly for each refresh, reducing the time a moving image is visible and therefore reducing sample-and-hold blur. NVIDIA’s ULMB 2 technology article reports more than 1000 Hz of effective motion clarity under its stated conditions. That figure is an effective clarity measure, not a claim that the panel physically refreshes at 1000Hz.

Strobing is optional and has meaningful compromises:

  • Brightness: the short flashes reduce average light output, so the image can look dimmer.
  • Frame-rate requirement: strobing is clearest when frame delivery is consistent and close to the strobe rate. Variable frame times can produce duplicate images or crosstalk.
  • VRR compatibility: some monitors cannot use their strobing mode and VRR simultaneously; others support a restricted combination.
  • Setup sensitivity: refresh rate, backlight mode and overdrive settings may need to be matched carefully to avoid visible crosstalk.

Compare VRR and strobing at the frame rate you can actually sustain. VRR is usually the better starting point for a game with changing performance. Strobing can be compelling for a locked, high-refresh setup where motion clarity is the priority and the brightness trade-off is acceptable.

Choose an upgrade based on the real bottleneck

Current limitation Most direct upgrade or change What it will not solve
60Hz display with no adaptive sync A 144Hz-or-higher VRR gaming monitor, assuming the PC can supply a suitable frame rate Game-generated blur left enabled in the graphics menu
High FPS but visible tearing Enable VRR and use a cap that stays within its range Slow panel response or poor overdrive tuning
Stable refresh but persistent sample-and-hold softness Higher refresh rate or a compatible backlight-strobing mode Stutter caused by inconsistent frame times
Low and uneven FPS Reduce expensive settings, use a quality upscaler, or upgrade the GPU/CPU that is actually limiting Display blur that remains at the same refresh rate

Do not buy a faster monitor solely because its headline refresh rate is higher. Check the panel’s VRR range, brightness with strobing enabled, whether strobing and VRR can operate together, input-latency behavior, and the frame rate your hardware can sustain at your chosen resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The game is still blurry after Motion Blur is off

  1. Confirm that Camera Blur, Radial Blur and Depth of Field are also disabled or reduced.
  2. Check whether TAA or another temporal anti-aliasing mode is creating softness; compare its lower setting with a supported Quality upscaler.
  3. Confirm Windows is actually using the monitor’s highest stable refresh rate.
  4. Enable VRR and check the monitor’s refresh readout during a corner or replay pan.
  5. If blur remains with a stable, high refresh rate, evaluate the panel’s response behavior or a supported strobing mode.

The image tears even though FPS is high

Tearing occurs when the display begins a refresh while a new frame is being presented. Enable G-SYNC, FreeSync or the monitor’s adaptive-sync option, then cap FPS so it does not repeatedly exceed the VRR ceiling. If the title’s limiter is inaccurate, test a driver-level cap. Verify that the game is running on the display and GPU for which VRR is enabled.

The game feels jerky despite a high average FPS

Inspect frame times and 1% lows. Look for shader compilation, asset streaming, CPU saturation, background recording, thermal throttling or a settings option that spikes during rain and crowded starts. A cap below the worst-case sustained rate can remove oscillation. If the cap is already stable, lower CPU-heavy crowd and object settings or GPU-heavy reflections, volumetrics and ray tracing according to which component is saturated.

Upscaling made the picture worse

Return to Quality mode, compare another supported upscaler, or disable reconstruction and lower reflections, shadows or volumetrics instead. Ghosting, shimmering and HUD softness are legitimate reasons to reject a particular mode; the highest FPS is not automatically the best racing image.

Strobing looks dim or shows double images

Increase the room lighting or return to VRR if brightness is unacceptable. If double images or crosstalk appear, confirm that the frame rate is locked near the strobe rate and that the monitor’s recommended overdrive and strobe settings are being used. Some panels simply have better strobe performance at one refresh rate than another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical order of operations

  1. Record resolution, refresh rate, VRR state, average FPS, 1% lows and the exact test section.
  2. Disable Motion Blur, Camera Blur and Radial Blur; decide separately whether to keep Depth of Field.
  3. Check TAA softness and compare a Quality upscaler if the game supports one.
  4. Lower ray tracing, reflections, volumetrics, shadows and crowd density before sacrificing output resolution.
  5. Set Windows and the game to the highest stable refresh rate.
  6. Enable G-SYNC, FreeSync or another supported VRR mode and verify it with an on-screen readout or overlay.
  7. Cap FPS to a sustainable value inside the VRR range and retest the same track or replay.
  8. Only then compare a monitor upgrade or backlight-strobing mode, using the frame rate you can actually maintain.

This sequence separates rendered effects, frame pacing and display behavior. It gives you a sharper picture first, then recovers performance with the least visible cost, and finally addresses the physical limits of the monitor.
