How to Reduce Memory Use in Chrome and Other Browsers

Close unneeded tabs, find memory-heavy tasks, and use Chrome Memory Saver or Edge Sleeping tabs to manage inactive pages—with clear trade-offs for reloads and background activity.

To reduce browser memory use, first close tabs you no longer need and disable extensions you do not use. Then turn on Chrome’s Memory Saver or Edge’s sleeping tabs to unload or pause inactive pages. These features can delay a return to a tab or interrupt background activity, so protect sites that need to stay active.

Why is your browser using so much RAM?

Open tabs, extensions, and pages doing work in the background all contribute to a browser’s workload. Google’s troubleshooting guide notes that “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work.” Memory use also depends on the pages you have loaded, your browser version, and other applications running on the computer; there is no reliable fixed amount of RAM that a browser should use.

When the device does not have enough available memory, Chrome says pages may run slowly, crash, or fail to load. Start by freeing memory and reducing unnecessary work before considering hardware changes. Google’s troubleshooting steps include closing tabs and stopping tasks that are not needed.

Close tabs you are finished with

Close pages you no longer need. This reduces the browser’s current workload without changing its settings. If you need a page later, bookmark it before closing the tab.

  • Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.

Disable extensions you do not use

Review installed extensions and disable or remove those you no longer need. An extension can run in the background, so reducing the number in use can help narrow down what is consuming resources.

Find memory-heavy pages in Chrome Task Manager

  1. In Chrome, select More > More tools > Task Manager.
  2. Select the Memory column to sort tasks by memory use.
  3. Identify a page or task you can safely stop, select it, and choose End process.

Do not end a task if it may contain work you have not saved. Google warns that ending a process can cause unsaved work to be lost. If pages are crashing or failing to load, quit other applications and pause downloads as well, then reload the affected page.

How to reduce memory use in Chrome

Turn on Memory Saver

  1. Open Settings > Performance.
  2. Turn on Memory Saver.
  3. Choose Moderate, Balanced, or Maximum to set how readily inactive tabs are deactivated.

Google describes Moderate as waiting longer before deactivating tabs, Balanced as the recommended compromise, and Maximum as deactivating them sooner. A deactivated tab reloads when you return to it, so a more aggressive setting may save more memory at the cost of a less seamless return. The setting is for desktop Chrome; menu labels can differ between versions.

Keep important background sites active

For a page you need to keep available in the background, open Settings > Performance and add it under Always keep these sites active. Chrome supports adding sites manually or choosing currently open sites.

Chrome may also keep a tab active rather than deactivate it when it is playing audio or video, sharing a screen, showing page notifications, downloading, using a partially filled form, pinned, or connected to a device. If a tab does not deactivate, one of these activities may explain why.

Equivalent controls in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Settings > System and performance > Performance.
  2. Turn on Automatically put tabs to sleep.
  3. Adjust the inactivity interval if needed, and add sites that should be excluded from sleeping to the site exclusion list.

Microsoft’s support page describes a two-hour default inactivity period for Sleeping tabs; the interval is adjustable, and defaults or labels may change. Check the current setting in your version of Edge.

Edge distinguishes sleeping from discarding. A sleeping tab pauses background activity and releases some resources while making it quicker to return. A discarded tab unloads its page content, so it must reload when reopened. Edge’s Performance detector can identify high-resource background tabs and let you sleep or close selected ones.

Edge Energy saver can put background tabs to sleep sooner and reduce other activity. More aggressive energy-saving settings can affect responsiveness—for example, video may play less smoothly. Use them when the trade-off is worthwhile, rather than assuming maximum power saving is free of performance costs.

What Firefox performance settings can—and cannot—do

Mozilla says Firefox selects performance settings based on the computer’s hardware and operating system. Its help article covers settings such as hardware acceleration, which may be useful when troubleshooting graphics or stability problems. It is not described as a guaranteed way to reduce memory used by open tabs. Options and interface details can vary by platform, package, and Firefox version, so follow the labels available in your installation.

Which browser control should you use?

Browser and control What it does What happens when you return Main trade-off
Chrome Memory Saver Deactivates inactive desktop tabs; offers Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum levels and site exclusions. The tab reloads. More aggressive deactivation can save more memory, but returning to a tab is less seamless.
Edge Sleeping tabs Pauses background tabs and releases some resources; offers an adjustable interval and site exclusions. A sleeping tab resumes more readily. A discarded tab must reload. Background activity pauses; discarding adds a reload.
Firefox performance settings Adjust general performance behavior, including hardware acceleration where available. The cited Mozilla guidance does not specify tab unloading or a tab-memory return behavior. Useful for graphics or stability troubleshooting, but not established as a tab-memory reduction control.

When to change settings—and when to stop

Start with closing unneeded tabs, disabling extensions, and checking the browser’s task manager. If you regularly keep many pages open, try Chrome Memory Saver or Edge Sleeping tabs, then add exclusions for sites whose background activity matters. If you are troubleshooting Firefox graphics or stability, consider its performance settings without expecting them to unload tabs.

Official help pages describe these controls but do not establish a comparable memory-saving figure or show that one browser is universally more memory-efficient. Your result depends on the device, browser build, loaded pages, and background activity. If memory pressure persists after reducing browser and application workload, the computer’s available memory may be a constraint; the browser guidance does not make a hardware upgrade the first remedy.
