What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If Windows feels slow and you need to keep your essential apps open, first check whether RAM is actually the bottleneck. Use Task Manager to find unusually heavy processes, then limit nonessential apps that launch or run in the background. These steps may reduce avoidable activity, but they cannot guarantee a particular amount of RAM back—and startup changes mainly help future sign-ins.
Check whether RAM is causing the slowdown
In this context, “memory” means RAM, not disk storage. Microsoft describes RAM as a device’s short-term memory: it helps determine how much work the PC can handle at once. Low free disk space is a separate issue; deleting files does not directly reduce RAM use.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Review the Memory column and compare it with CPU and Disk. If another resource is consistently busy, RAM may not be the main cause of the slowdown.
- Look for processes using unusually high resources and identify what they belong to before changing anything. Do not end an essential app just to lower the memory percentage. Microsoft recommends reviewing resource use to help identify what may be slowing a PC (performance guidance; Windows system tools).
Memory use by itself is not proof of a fault. The practical question is whether high memory use coincides with slow or unresponsive work, and whether a particular nonessential process is responsible.
Stop nonessential apps from launching automatically
Startup apps can affect startup speed and overall performance. Disabling one prevents it from launching automatically; it is mainly a preventive change for later starts, not a promise of immediate RAM reduction in the session you are using now.

- A-Tech 32GB RAM Kit (2 x 16GB Modules), DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 2666MHz / 2667MHz PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and select Startup apps.
- Disable only apps you do not need to start automatically. Keep tools you rely on for security, accessibility, work, or essential syncing enabled.
You can reverse the change in the same list. Microsoft’s startup-app guidance covers these controls; labels can vary by Windows release.
Limit background activity where Windows offers the option
For supported apps, Windows can restrict background activity. This may help limit what an app does while inactive, but it can also prevent background notifications, syncing, or updates. Desktop programs may not have this Windows setting and may need to be configured in their own preferences.

- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Open the menu beside the app, choose Advanced options, and find Background app permissions.
- Choose a less permissive option if it suits how you use the app. If the setting is missing, check the app’s own settings; not every desktop program is managed here.
Before restricting an app, consider whether you depend on timely alerts or current synced content. Microsoft explains the scope and privacy implications in its background apps guidance.
Compare the options and their trade-offs
| Option | Effect on current RAM use | Possible trade-off | Where it applies | Risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disable a startup app | Primarily prevents an automatic launch on a later start; does not promise immediate reduction in the current session. | The app will not open automatically when you sign in. | Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps. | Reversible from the same list; avoid disabling tools you need at sign-in. |
| Restrict background app permissions | May limit activity while a supported app is inactive. | Notifications, syncing, or updates may stop or be delayed. | Supported apps with the Background app permissions setting; desktop apps may require their own controls. | Reversible in the app’s Advanced options when the setting is available. |
| Reduce visual effects | Not established as a reliable way to reclaim substantial RAM. | Windows may look less animated or polished; this is primarily a responsiveness adjustment. | Windows visual-effects settings. | Can be changed back; Microsoft lists reducing visual effects among performance options. |
| Choose Best performance power mode | Not a RAM cleanup step. | May increase power use, heat, and laptop battery drain. | Windows power settings; exact availability can vary by device. | Can be changed back; consider battery and thermal needs. |
Microsoft lists visual-effects adjustments as one performance option. Its performance guidance also says Best performance may help CPU performance, but it uses more power and can increase heat and battery drain. Neither should be treated as a way to clear RAM on demand.

Avoid fixes that target the wrong thing
- Storage cleanup: Removing files can help if disk space is low, but storage and RAM are different resources. It is not a direct RAM-reduction method.
- RAM-cleaner utilities: The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that a cleaner will reliably free physical RAM. Do not assume that a lower displayed figure means the underlying slowdown is fixed.
- Arbitrary page-file changes: Do not set a fixed page-file size or disable virtual memory as a general RAM fix. Microsoft’s page-file advice is specific to Access and says Windows’ default virtual-memory setting should work well in most cases (Access performance guidance).
- Restarting: A restart closes the current session and its apps. Use one if troubleshooting remains unresolved or an update calls for it—not as a way to reduce memory while keeping essential apps open.
If memory pressure continues, check software and hardware limits
Update Windows and investigate the process that remains unusually resource-intensive. If a PC is older, software adjustments may have limited impact; Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps” (Microsoft performance guidance).
Microsoft’s general memory guidance, accessed in 2026, gives broad reference points: at least 4 GB for browsing, documents, and streaming; 8 GB recommended for long-term use; and 16 GB or more as a possible fit for photo/video editing or other high-performance work. These are not a diagnosis or a guarantee that a particular workload will run well (All about computer memory).

Consider adding RAM only after checking the exact device model, installed memory, and manufacturer specifications. Upgradeability and compatible parts depend on the device; Microsoft advises checking with the manufacturer or a retailer, and notes some devices under 4 GB may have options. See Windows 11 system requirements and how to find information about your Windows device.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. A Windows version change is not, by itself, a fix for RAM pressure (Microsoft performance guidance).
