First identify which URL is failing: a MediaPackage playback endpoint or CDN URL, or the YouTube watch page. They are different service paths. MediaPackage packages upstream input for playback; YouTube receives an encoder feed at its own Stream URL using a stream key. A healthy status in one service does not prove the other is working. Without the failing URL and its error evidence, there is no single safe fix—use the checks below to isolate the failing leg before changing settings.
Identify the failing service before changing anything
Write down the exact URL a viewer opens and which encoder output or upstream input is involved. Keep the YouTube stream key private; do not paste it into public logs, screenshots, or support posts. Determine whether viewers are opening:

- A MediaPackage playback endpoint directly.
- A CDN URL that delivers MediaPackage output.
- A YouTube watch page.
MediaPackage receives upstream live content and dynamically packages it for a configured origin endpoint. YouTube Live uses a separate encoder ingestion URL and stream key. A MediaPackage playback URL is not YouTube’s ingestion URL. This distinction determines which service dashboard, request trace, and logs can explain the failure.

Use the failure evidence to choose a path
| Evidence to collect | What it helps isolate |
|---|---|
| Viewer destination and exact failing URL | Whether the problem is on a MediaPackage/CDN playback path or the YouTube watch page. |
| Encoder protocol and destination | Whether the encoder is sending input to MediaPackage, YouTube, or both, and which protocol-specific requirements apply. |
| Manifest and segment responses, timestamps, and whether the manifest advances | Whether playback fails at the origin, CDN, or player, and whether output is fresh and complete. |
| MediaPackage ingest and endpoint evidence | Whether new input is arriving and the configured endpoint is producing current output. |
| YouTube Live Control Room stream-health messages | Whether YouTube is reporting a problem with its own encoder ingest. |
| AWS Region, CDN path, viewer ISP, and incident time | Whether a geographically specific delivery issue is supported by evidence rather than inferred from the viewer’s country. |
Fix a MediaPackage playback URL that returns an error
Check whether ingest is arriving and the manifest is fresh
On the MediaPackage path, verify whether new input segments are arriving and whether the playback manifest is advancing. AWS describes a stale manifest as an output that no longer updates after MediaPackage stops receiving ingest. An incomplete manifest indicates gaps in the segment timeline. Either can disrupt playback even when an encoder process appears to be running.
If the endpoint is configured to return errors for stale or incomplete output, check whether a 404 is the deliberate response to one of those conditions. Distinguish that configured signal from an unexplained 404 or a player-side error before treating it as an outage.
Confirm that the input is supported
Compare the actual input type and codecs with AWS Elemental MediaPackage’s current input-support documentation. For HLS inputs, AWS lists requirements including HTTPS/WebDAV with digest authentication, unencrypted media segments, and a required video track. A running encoder does not establish that MediaPackage is receiving a supported, continuous stream.

Inspect the actual manifest and segment requests
- Reproduce the problem and capture the manifest request and representative segment requests from the affected playback session.
- Record each request URL, response status, timestamp, and whether the request went to the origin or through a CDN. Redact credentials and tokens before sharing the trace.
- Check that the manifest contains the expected variants, audio, and current segment references, and note whether it changes between requests.
- Compare origin and CDN responses. If the origin is current but the CDN is stale or different, inspect cache behavior, cache keys, and query-string forwarding for the delivery path.
- Remove unsupported manifest-filter parameters where appropriate, then retest the exact affected URL.
AWS documents HTTP 400 responses for malformed, repeated, or invalid manifest-filter query parameters, as well as for query parameters on HLS/CMAF bitrate manifests or segment requests. Do not assume that every 400 is a MediaPackage outage; inspect the request parameters and the response at each delivery layer.
Apply CDN guidance only to the matching delivery mode
AWS’s MediaPackage CDN guidance calls out manifest-related query strings that may need to be included in the cache key. For LL-HLS blocking requests, it recommends a response timeout at least three times the part duration. Apply these checks only if the endpoint and delivery path use the relevant HLS or LL-HLS behavior; they are not universal settings for every MediaPackage stream.
Why is my YouTube live stream not playing?
If viewers are watching a YouTube watch page, check YouTube ingest independently of MediaPackage. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and review its stream-health status, specific error messages, and real-time metrics alongside the encoder’s own status. A healthy MediaPackage endpoint does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed, and a healthy YouTube ingest does not prove that a separate MediaPackage playback endpoint works.

For RTMP or RTMPS ingest
Use YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, not the HLS requirements below. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum recommended interval of 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the value for the actual output rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

For YouTube HLS ingest
Check the HLS-specific requirements instead of applying RTMP settings. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies:
- MPEG-TS segments, 1–4 seconds long.
- A rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- HTTPS POST/PUT requests.
- No byte-range mode.
- No encryption other than HTTPS.
YouTube states that the Ultra low-latency option is off when HLS is selected. Confirm the encoder is configured for the protocol actually selected in YouTube and is following its corresponding requirements.

How do I fix a stale HLS manifest?
First establish which service produced the manifest. For a MediaPackage manifest, check whether ingest has stopped, whether new segments are arriving, and whether the manifest is advancing. For a YouTube ingest playlist, verify the encoder’s HLS output against YouTube’s segment and rolling-playlist requirements. For either path, compare timestamps and responses at the origin and CDN, if a CDN is in use; a stale cached response and a stale origin manifest are different failures.
Do not reset a channel just because a player reports an error. Preserve the affected manifest and segment URLs, response codes, timestamps, ingest evidence, and endpoint configuration first. That evidence helps distinguish an ingest interruption, a timeline gap, an unsupported request, or a delivery-layer cache issue.

Is YouTube ingest working while MediaPackage playback is broken?
It can be: they are separate service legs. If YouTube’s Live Control Room reports healthy ingest while a direct MediaPackage playback URL fails, focus on MediaPackage input continuity, endpoint output, request responses, and any CDN in front of that endpoint. If a YouTube watch page fails while MediaPackage playback works, investigate YouTube’s ingest status and the encoder’s YouTube destination. A green or healthy signal from one service is not evidence that the other leg is healthy.

When to reset a MediaPackage v2 channel
AWS documents a channel reset as a way to remove previously ingested content from a MediaPackage v2 channel. Use it as a recovery action only after collecting evidence and considering whether the underlying encoder or network problem will recur.
- Stop the encoder sending input to the channel.
- Reset the MediaPackage v2 channel.
- Wait at least 30 seconds after the reset.
- Restart the encoder.
- Confirm new input arrives and the playback manifest advances.
Make 24/7 monitoring useful
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. For a 24/7 stream, keep a routine record that ties together the encoder’s status, YouTube Live Control Room messages, MediaPackage ingest and endpoint evidence, and CDN responses where applicable. Include timestamps and the affected URL so that a later alert can be matched to the correct service leg.
Copyright and reused-content checks are separate from playback errors
A technically healthy stream can still encounter a rights or YouTube policy issue. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the audio and video you broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies for your channel and content. Playback troubleshooting does not establish copyright clearance or monetization eligibility; a successful connection does not change those requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than to repair an existing AWS MediaPackage workflow, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not diagnose or repair MediaPackage, and it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
