How to Reduce Input Latency in Rhythm Games on a TV or Monitor

Start with Game Mode, a direct wired video connection, the highest stable refresh rate, and a tested controller connection. Then enable VRR and ALLM only when both the game device and display support them, and rerun the game’s timing calibration after every meaningful change. These steps remove common sources of delay, but no authoritative source establishes one universal “acceptable” millisecond figure for rhythm games. Every television and monitor has its own hardware-defined latency.

What input latency means in a rhythm game

Input latency is the time between your action and the corresponding result appearing or sounding. In a rhythm game, the delay can come from several links in the chain: the controller, the console or PC, the video cable and any intermediate device, the display’s image-processing pipeline, and the game’s audio and video timing. A small, consistent offset can often be compensated for with calibration. A variable delay, dropped frame, or unstable wireless connection cannot be fixed by calibration alone.

Refresh rate and input latency are related but not identical. At a higher refresh rate, the display has a shorter interval between visible frames, so an input can appear sooner. The display’s internal processing still contributes its own delay, however. Intel notes that every TV and monitor has a unique, hardware-defined input latency; a 120 Hz display is not automatically faster than every 60 Hz display in every operating mode.

There is no general latency threshold published by the authoritative guidance used for this article. Treat your game’s timing calibration and repeatable play tests as the practical test, rather than assuming that a particular number of milliseconds guarantees a good result.

The fastest setup sequence

Change one item at a time and record the original setting. That makes it possible to identify the change that helped instead of changing several variables and guessing.

  1. Turn on the display’s Game Mode or low-latency preset. On some Sony televisions this appears as Content type = Game; other sets label it Picture mode = Game. Menu names vary by model and firmware.
  2. Connect the console or PC directly to the display. Temporarily bypass a wireless display path, AV receiver, HDMI switch, or capture device while diagnosing delay.
  3. Use the HDMI input documented for high refresh rates and VRR. Some televisions restrict 4K 120 Hz or 144 Hz to specific ports. Enable the manufacturer’s enhanced-bandwidth option if the input menu provides one.
  4. Select the highest stable refresh rate. Choose it in the PC operating-system or graphics settings, or use the console and game’s 120 Hz/performance option when supported.
  5. Enable VRR and ALLM if both ends support them. VRR synchronizes frame delivery with the display’s refresh behavior; ALLM lets a console or PC request the display’s low-latency mode automatically.
  6. Compare controller connections. Test wired USB against Bluetooth and, where available, a 2.4 GHz receiver. Epic’s controller troubleshooting guidance identifies 2.4 GHz as more stable and lower latency than other wireless options in the relevant cases.
  7. Run the game’s audio/video calibration again. Do this after changing the display mode, refresh rate, HDMI path, or controller.

Keep the setup that produces a consistent response and a stable frame rate. A nominally faster mode that drops frames or repeatedly changes refresh behavior can feel worse than a slower, stable one.

Use Game Mode to bypass unnecessary processing

Televisions often add motion interpolation, noise reduction, cinema processing, edge enhancement, dynamic contrast, and other picture operations. Those operations can add time before a frame is shown. Intel describes Game Mode as a way to minimize input lag by bypassing video-signal processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the display’s picture or input settings while the console or PC is active and select the gaming preset. On models that separate source type from picture mode, choose the game content type first and then confirm that the resulting picture mode is the low-latency option. If the set exposes individual controls, disable extra motion smoothing, noise reduction, and cinema-processing features for that input. Some displays automatically lock these controls in Game Mode; that is expected.

Game Mode does not accelerate the controller, console, or game engine. It only addresses processing in the display path. If notes still feel late after enabling it, continue with the cable, refresh, synchronization, and controller checks rather than repeatedly recalibrating.

Connect the video path directly

A wired display connection is preferable when possible. Intel states that wireless displays introduce more latency than wired ones, especially at high-resolution settings. Run a certified HDMI cable from the console or PC directly to the TV or monitor for testing.

If an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch, extender, capture card, or wireless video adapter sits between the source and display, remove it temporarily. The available guidance establishes the advantage of a wired display path but does not assign a single delay value to every intermediary. Bypassing each device is therefore a diagnostic step, not proof that every device adds the same amount of latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once the direct path works, add intermediate equipment back one item at a time. Confirm that the final chain still negotiates the intended resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and VRR status. A device that silently falls back to a lower mode can change the game’s frame timing even if the picture still appears normal.

Choose the correct HDMI input and bandwidth mode

HDMI sockets on the same television may not have identical capabilities. Amazon’s Fire TV guidance, for compatible models, identifies HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 as ports that can support 4K/UHD at 120 Hz or 144 Hz; the assignment differs by model. Read the label beside the socket and the display’s manual rather than assuming that the first port is the fastest.

Some manufacturers require an input option such as Enhanced format, Input Signal Plus, or a similar high-bandwidth setting. Samsung documents HDMI 2.1 feature activation through input settings on supported products. If that option is off, the source may be limited to a lower refresh rate or lose VRR.

For a 4K 120 Hz connection, use a cable rated for the bandwidth required by both devices. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is appropriate when the source and display are operating in a mode that needs that certification. The cable is not a substitute for compatible ports: if either device lacks the required capability, a new cable cannot create it. Check the negotiated mode in the console or PC display-information panel after changing cables.

Set the highest stable refresh rate

On a PC, open the operating system’s display settings or the graphics driver’s display panel, select the correct monitor, and choose the intended refresh rate. Check the game’s own video menu as well; some titles use an internal frame-rate cap or a separate performance mode.

On a console, enable the system’s 120 Hz or performance setting when the display and game support it, then verify the game is actually running in that mode. A television can report 120 Hz capability while a particular input, resolution, cable, or game uses 60 Hz instead.

Higher refresh reduces the wait until the next visible frame. It does not remove the display’s processing latency, and it does not compensate for a controller that is losing packets. If the higher mode causes flicker, black screens, frame pacing problems, or repeated signal renegotiation, use the highest mode that remains stable during a complete play session.

Setting or capability What it changes What it does not guarantee
60 Hz versus 120/144 Hz Shortens the interval between displayed frames when the source actually renders at that rate. A universally lower end-to-end latency; the panel and processing path still differ by model.
Game Mode Bypasses or reduces display processing intended for films and general viewing. Lower controller or game-engine latency.
VRR Matches refresh behavior to delivered frame timing to reduce tearing and stutter. A fixed latency value or support when either device lacks VRR.
ALLM Lets a source request the display’s low-latency mode automatically. Low latency on a display without a genuine low-processing game mode.

Understand VRR and ALLM

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) allows a compatible source and display to coordinate when the next frame is shown. It can reduce tearing and stutter when the game’s frame delivery varies. Both devices must support the same VRR technology and operating range, and the connection must carry it.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is a switching feature, not a separate speed boost. HDMI defines it as a signal from a game console, PC, or other device that causes the display to switch automatically to a low-latency gaming mode. If the source or display does not support ALLM, select Game Mode manually.

Enable VRR and ALLM in the source and display menus only after confirming compatibility. If VRR produces flicker, blackouts, or unstable frame pacing, turn it off and use a fixed refresh mode that the game handles reliably. If ALLM does not switch modes, confirm that the input is configured for enhanced HDMI features and that the display is not locked to a cinema or filmmaker preset.

Check the controller before blaming the screen

The display can be perfectly configured while the controller adds delay. Compare the same game and song with the controller connected by USB, Bluetooth, and a 2.4 GHz receiver if your hardware offers those options. Keep the controller charged, remove unnecessary wireless interference, and avoid testing through a hub whose behavior you have not verified.

Epic’s controller troubleshooting guidance identifies 2.4 GHz as more stable and lower latency than other wireless connections in the relevant scenarios. That does not make every 2.4 GHz device faster than every wired controller; it means the connection type is worth isolating when wireless input feels inconsistent.

Use a repeatable pattern in the game: the same song, difficulty, and input type. If wired input consistently improves hit timing while the display settings remain unchanged, investigate the wireless link rather than changing picture modes again.

Recalibrate after changing the chain

Rhythm games usually provide an audio, video, or combined timing calibration. Run it after changing Game Mode, refresh rate, VRR, HDMI routing, a receiver, or the controller connection. Calibration records a consistent offset so note timing matches what you hear or see.

Calibration cannot remove processing delay, compensate for dropped frames, or correct a connection whose delay changes from moment to moment. If the required offset keeps changing between sessions, first look for an unstable refresh mode, wireless interference, frame-rate drops, or a display setting that is switching automatically.

Diagnose symptoms methodically

Every note feels consistently early or late

Check Game Mode, then rerun calibration. Verify that the display is not applying a different picture preset to the game input and that audio is not taking a separate delayed path through a soundbar or receiver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Timing changes during a song

Look for frame drops, VRR instability, wireless controller interference, or a mode that is repeatedly renegotiating. Test a fixed refresh rate and a wired controller to separate display synchronization from input transmission.

The game feels fine at 60 Hz but unreliable at 120 Hz

Confirm the HDMI port, cable rating, enhanced-input option, and source settings. A higher advertised capability is not useful if the signal is falling back, flickering, or exceeding the stable bandwidth of one component.

Only one game feels delayed

Check that title’s frame-rate mode, internal latency or audio offset controls, and calibration. Keep the display chain unchanged while comparing games so a game-specific setting is not confused with television latency.

Wireless and wired controllers feel different

Repeat the test with a full charge, the receiver in a clear USB location, and other wireless devices temporarily moved away. If the wired result remains consistently better, use wired or 2.4 GHz for rhythm play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TV versus monitor for rhythm games

Neither category is universally faster. Compare the exact model’s measured latency and supported modes, not its “gaming” label.

Comparison point TV considerations Monitor considerations
Processing path May include extensive motion, noise, cinema, and image-enhancement controls; Game Mode is important. Often offers a simpler low-processing path, but the model’s game preset still needs verification.
Measured input latency Varies by model, resolution, HDR mode, and picture preset. Also varies by model and operating mode; use published measurements for the exact display.
Refresh and synchronization Check the supported refresh rate, VRR range, ALLM behavior, and port assignment. Check the same items, plus the PC graphics settings and any frame-rate cap.
Connectivity High-refresh capability may be limited to one or two HDMI inputs. Port bandwidth and DisplayPort/HDMI behavior can differ by input; connect directly for testing.
Use case Larger image and shared viewing are useful for living-room play. Desk distance, consistent presets, and high refresh can suit focused play.

When buying, require independent measured input-lag data for the resolution and refresh mode you will use. A specification such as 144 Hz describes a supported operating mode, not a measured end-to-end latency.

When HDMI 2.1 matters

HDMI 2.1 is relevant when your particular source and display need its bandwidth or features for the target resolution and refresh combination. It is not a blanket requirement for every 120 Hz setup. Some devices support high refresh at a different resolution or with different signal constraints, while others reserve 4K 120 Hz and certain VRR combinations for HDMI 2.1-class inputs.

Check three things together: the console or GPU’s output capability, the display’s port specification, and the cable certification. If any one component cannot carry the chosen mode, the system will negotiate a lower mode or disable a feature. Use the display’s information screen and the source’s output details to confirm what is actually active.

A controlled troubleshooting checklist

  • Write down the current resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, VRR state, ALLM state, picture preset, HDMI input, and controller connection.
  • Enable Game Mode and disable optional motion, noise-reduction, and cinema processing.
  • Connect the source directly with a suitable certified HDMI cable.
  • Move to the input documented for high refresh and enable its enhanced-bandwidth option.
  • Select the highest refresh rate that remains stable for a full session.
  • Test VRR and ALLM separately; keep only combinations that remain stable and supported by both devices.
  • Compare wired, Bluetooth, and 2.4 GHz controller paths without changing the display.
  • Run the game’s timing calibration once the chain is final.
  • Change only one variable in later tests and keep notes of the result.

This process identifies whether the dominant problem is display processing, signal routing, refresh stability, synchronization, or controller transmission. It also prevents calibration from masking a hardware or connection issue.

What to verify before buying accessories or a new display

  • Display measurements: Look for input-lag tests at the exact resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, and Game Mode setting you intend to use.
  • Port assignment: Confirm which HDMI input supports the desired refresh and VRR features; do not rely on the number printed on the bezel.
  • Cable certification: Match the cable to the target signal. A higher-rated cable is useful only when the source and display support that signal.
  • Synchronization support: Verify VRR range and ALLM support on both ends.
  • Controller options: Prefer a reliable wired or 2.4 GHz path when rhythm timing is more important than cable-free convenience.
  • Menu behavior: Check whether Game Mode remains active for the chosen input and whether changing HDR or VRR silently switches picture presets.

Why calibration still matters after optimization

Even a low-processing display can have a consistent offset caused by the panel, audio route, console output, or game engine. Calibration aligns the game’s timing to that finished chain. Perform it only after the hardware and settings are settled; otherwise every later change invalidates the offset and forces another calibration.
