To reduce flash-loan risk, check how the exact protocol deployment prices collateral, accounts for vault shares, handles governance power, and validates flash-loan callbacks. A flash loan must be repaid within the transaction, but that does not stop borrowed liquidity from temporarily changing prices, balances, or voting power before repayment.
How flash loans can affect lending markets and vaults
Manipulating a price used as collateral value
A large flash-funded trade can move the price on a thin or otherwise manipulable decentralized exchange (DEX). If a lending protocol reads that spot price to value collateral, it may temporarily treat collateral as worth more than it is and allow excess borrowing. Ethereum.org’s smart contract security documentation describes this risk and recommends using decentralized oracle networks that draw on multiple sources or time-weighted average prices (TWAPs).

A TWAP makes a brief price move less influential when it averages prices over a longer period. That is a trade-off, not a universal fix: a longer window can also lag a rapidly changing market. Check the protocol’s actual oracle design and failure behavior rather than treating “uses an oracle” as proof that prices cannot be manipulated.

Repayment at the end of a transaction limits how long a borrower holds the funds; it does not prevent other contracts from acting on temporary changes before repayment. Depending on a system’s design, flash liquidity can affect prices, balances, interest-rate inputs, or voting power during that transaction. ERC-3156’s security considerations warn that callback arguments must be verified rather than trusted automatically.

Exploiting vault share accounting
An ERC-4626 label identifies a tokenized-vault interface, not a guarantee that the vault’s accounting is protected against every attack. OpenZeppelin documents an inflation attack in which donations and share-minting behavior can affect the value received by depositors. Review the deployed vault implementation and its configuration, especially how deposits mint shares and how the vault handles assets already present.
What to check before depositing or borrowing
Identify the deployment, not just the protocol brand
Find the exact chain and contract deployment you plan to use. A protocol name may cover several markets, versions, vaults, and parameter sets; a description of one deployment does not establish the safety of another. Confirm that the addresses and version you inspect match the contracts you will interact with.

Trace how collateral and vault assets are priced
For each relevant asset, find the price source and determine how the contract uses it. Check:
- Which sources contribute to the price, and whether they are independent of a single easily moved market.
- How often data updates and what the protocol does with stale or unavailable data.
- Whether it checks for unusually large deviations between sources or prior values.
- Whether collateral valuation depends on a DEX spot price that a large trade could move.
- How an averaging window affects both brief manipulation and the possibility of lagging a fast market.
Ethereum.org’s security documentation discusses oracle networks and TWAPs; the Chainlink oracle documentation is also relevant when assessing decentralized feeds. A decentralized feed still has sources, update rules, and failure modes that need to be understood.

Review the vault’s deposit and share-minting logic
For an ERC-4626 vault, inspect the deployed implementation and version rather than relying on the interface standard alone. Determine how deposits are converted into shares and whether the implementation includes protections against donation-driven inflation attacks. The relevant question is how this vault behaves under its actual configuration, not whether its documentation simply calls it ERC-4626.
Check governance and upgrade controls
Find out whether voting power is based on current balances or historical snapshots. Current-balance voting can make temporarily borrowed governance tokens more useful; historical snapshots can reduce the usefulness of acquiring voting power in the same block as a vote. Also check whether approved critical changes pass through a timelock before execution. Ethereum.org’s smart contract security documentation states: “One way of preventing problems related to onchain governance is to use a timelock.” A delay can give users and monitors time to react, but its value depends on the system’s actual voting and execution rules.

Examine audits, administration, and incident history
Read independent audit reports for the contracts and versions actually deployed. Note unresolved findings, what components were in scope, and whether material changes were made after the review. Check who can upgrade contracts or change parameters, what emergency controls exist, and whether the protocol has a relevant incident history. The Ethereum Foundation’s policy treats audits as one consideration alongside smart-contract, oracle, governance, custodial, and liquidity risks—not as a guarantee of safety.
How to assess a flash-loan integration
If a contract receives flash-loan callbacks, review the receiver code and the assumptions it makes before accepting the operation. ERC-3156’s security considerations say: “No arguments can be assumed to be genuine without some kind of verification.” Verify the callback context instead of treating a correctly shaped call as proof that a trusted lender initiated it.

A practical protocol comparison checklist
When comparing candidate markets or vaults, assess the same deployment-specific questions for each one. There is no single setting that eliminates flash-loan risk, and improvements can involve trade-offs.
- Oracle design: Sources, update frequency, stale-data handling, deviation checks, and exposure to spot-price movement.
- Governance and upgrades: Current-balance versus historical voting power, execution delays, upgrade authority, and emergency controls.
- Vault accounting: Deposit and share-minting behavior, protections against inflation or donation attacks, and the deployed code version.
- Security review: Independent audit coverage, unresolved findings, subsequent changes, and incident history.
- Liquidity and exits: Available liquidity and withdrawal conditions. Stronger oracle or governance controls do not guarantee that funds can be withdrawn when wanted.
Ethereum.org’s security guidance, ERC-3156, OpenZeppelin’s ERC-4626 documentation, and the Ethereum Foundation policy provide useful technical and policy context for these checks. None establishes the current configuration or safety of a particular market or vault; that must be verified against its deployed contracts and settings.
