Yes. When you send a prompt to a hosted AI service, the provider processes it, and its policies may allow storage, automated safety checks, or limited human review. That does not mean a person routinely reads every conversation. Whether your content is used to improve models or how long it is retained depends on the provider, account type, settings, features you use, and exceptions for safety or legal reasons.
Turning off model training is not the same as deleting chat history or ensuring that nothing is retained. The policies below cover OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Anthropic; they are not a survey of every AI service, and provider terms can vary by region and change over time.

What does it mean for an AI company to “see” a prompt?
A hosted AI service must process the information you submit to generate a response. Depending on the product and feature, submitted content can include more than typed text: it may include uploaded files or images, voice transcripts, feedback, or excerpts from connected apps and search features.

Providers may use automated systems for safety and service operation, and some policies permit limited human review for specific purposes. For example, Google says a subset of Gemini chats may be reviewed by trained reviewers or service providers. Anthropic says consumer conversations flagged for safety review may be analyzed to improve safeguards. Those policies describe eligible review pathways, not a claim that every chat is read by a person.

A useful privacy distinction is between processing (the service handles your content), retention (the provider keeps it for some period), model improvement (the provider may use it to improve models), and human review (an authorized reviewer may examine eligible content). A setting that changes one of these does not necessarily change the others.
How long do OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic keep prompts?
There is no universal retention period. These products also have different consumer, business, and API rules, so the relevant policy is the one for the specific account and feature you use.

| Service and account type | Model improvement | Retention and review details |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT and other OpenAI individual services, including Codex | OpenAI may use content to train models. You can opt out for new conversations using “Improve the model for everyone” in ChatGPT settings or “Do not train on my content” in the Privacy Portal. If you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, the associated conversation may be used to improve models even after opting out. | OpenAI’s cited consumer training policy does not state a general retention duration for ordinary chats or a specific deletion period for Temporary Chats; consult the current retention policy rather than inferring a period from the training control. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used for model improvement while they remain temporary. Saving one converts it to a regular chat subject to your account settings. |
| OpenAI ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, Teachers, and API | Inputs and outputs are not used to train or improve models by default, according to OpenAI. | Qualifying organizations can configure retention, including API zero data retention. These controls are not a blanket guarantee against access by administrators, safety systems, employees with authorized access, or legal processes. |
| Google Gemini consumer apps, Keep Activity on | Activity is saved and used to provide, develop, and improve Google services, including training generative AI models. | Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, says activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; users can choose 3 months, 36 months, or no automatic deletion. A subset of chats reviewed by human reviewers may be kept for up to 3 years, and that reviewer-separated data is not deleted when the user deletes activity. |
| Google Gemini consumer apps, Keep Activity off or Temporary Chat | Chats are not used to train AI models unless you submit feedback. Google says chats may still be used for service response and safety, including with human reviewers. | Google says chats with Keep Activity off and Temporary Chats are retained with the account for 72 hours to respond, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. They do not appear in Activity when Keep Activity is off. |
| Google Gemini Developer API, paid services | Prompts and responses are not used to improve Google products. | Prompts and responses may be logged for a limited time for abuse monitoring. Search and Maps grounding retain prompts, context, and output for 30 days, and that storage cannot be disabled while using those features. Live API session state may remain for up to 24 hours when a session handle is generated. File API uploads remain until deleted or expired; cached content uses a configured TTL. Google points organizations seeking guaranteed zero retention or enterprise data-processing agreements to Vertex AI. |
| Anthropic Claude consumer accounts: Free, Pro, Max, and Claude Code used with those accounts | Consumer chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude if you enable the setting, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement, even when the setting is enabled. | Anthropic’s Privacy Center policy dated July 1, 2026, says data may be retained in de-identified form in training pipelines for up to 5 years after enabling improvement, for new or resumed chats. Inputs and outputs flagged for usage-policy violations may be retained for up to 2 years; trust-and-safety classification scores may be retained for up to 7 years. Legal, dispute, and policy-enforcement exceptions may apply. |
| Anthropic API and commercial products | Rules depend on the service and agreement; Anthropic’s cited API retention documentation describes storage, not a universal training rule. | Anthropic says API inputs and outputs are automatically deleted from its backend within 30 days by default, subject to exceptions including services with longer user-controlled retention (such as Files API), a separate agreement such as zero data retention, policy enforcement, and legal compliance. Commercial products that save conversations retain them to support the experience; users can delete chats in the dashboard. Covered API models may require 30-day retention. An organization-specific zero-data-retention arrangement means prompts and responses are not stored at rest after the API response returns. Cloud-hosted arrangements such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud have separate provider data-handling terms. |
What do the privacy settings actually control?
Training and model improvement
A training opt-out limits a specified use of eligible content; it does not, by itself, erase saved conversations or establish that the provider holds no copy. OpenAI says its individual-service opt-out applies to new conversations, while feedback can create a separate exception for the associated conversation. Google’s Keep Activity off setting prevents training use of those chats unless you submit feedback, but the 72-hour retention and service-safety uses still apply. Anthropic’s consumer improvement setting affects whether eligible new or resumed chats can enter training pipelines, subject to its stated exceptions.

History, activity, and deletion
Visible history and backend retention are not always the same thing. Google explicitly says reviewer-separated data may remain for up to 3 years even if the user deletes activity. For ordinary OpenAI consumer chats, the cited training page does not give a general retention window, so do not treat the training toggle as a deletion control. Anthropic’s commercial product deletion behavior and API backend deletion are also distinct: a saved conversation in a product is not the same as an API request governed by backend-retention terms.

Temporary chats, uploads, and connected features
Temporary modes can change history or training treatment without eliminating processing. Google’s temporary chats still have a 72-hour retention period. OpenAI Temporary Chats are not used for model improvement while they remain temporary, but saving one makes it a regular chat. Files, search grounding, live sessions, and cached content may have their own retention rules: Google’s paid Gemini API, for example, retains Search and Maps grounding content for 30 days and does not let users disable that storage while using those features. Check the feature-specific terms rather than applying the chat setting to every attachment or tool.
Are business and API AI accounts private?
They can offer stronger default protections or configurable retention, but “business” or “API” does not automatically mean local-only processing, no provider access, or zero retention. OpenAI says listed business products and its API do not use inputs and outputs for training by default, and qualifying organizations can configure retention. Anthropic’s API has a stated 30-day backend deletion default with exceptions, while zero data retention requires a separate organization-specific arrangement. Google’s paid Gemini API excludes prompts from product improvement but can still retain data for abuse monitoring and selected features.

For an organization-managed account, also check the employer’s or administrator’s terms and controls. They may govern account access, logging, and retention separately from the consumer-facing settings. If an API is hosted through a cloud platform, that platform’s data-handling terms may apply too.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to reduce exposure before sending a prompt
- Identify the product and account. Confirm whether you are using a consumer app, an organization-managed workspace, a direct API, or an API through a cloud host. Do not assume their policies match.
- Review the relevant control. In ChatGPT, check Settings > Data Controls for “Improve the model for everyone,” or use OpenAI’s Privacy Portal. In Gemini, review Keep Activity and the temporary-chat option. For Claude, review the model-improvement setting and whether the conversation is in Incognito mode. Controls and labels can change.
- Check the data path for your feature. Look separately at uploads, feedback, connected apps, search or Maps grounding, files, live sessions, and caches. A chat-level toggle may not govern all of them.
- Use deletion deliberately. Delete history when you want it removed from the visible account, but do not assume this deletes every safety-review copy or overrides a stated retention exception. Read the provider’s deletion terms for the account and feature.
- Keep sensitive material out unless approved. Avoid submitting passwords, authentication secrets, confidential work information, private client data, or sensitive personal details unless the service and your organization explicitly approve that use. A consumer privacy setting is not equivalent to a contractual zero-retention deployment.
Why the provider and region matter
These examples are limited to the named providers and products. Google says its legal entity and terms differ for users in the European Economic Area and Switzerland compared with other regions. Anthropic consumer, commercial, and API policies are not interchangeable, and third-party cloud hosting brings separate terms. Check the policy applicable to your location, account, and current product version before relying on a particular control or duration.
