There is no single Samsung Galaxy “hidden messages” inbox. A missing conversation may be archived in Google Messages, in Samsung Messages’ Trash on some versions, inside a separate Messages app in Secure Folder, or simply absent from lock-screen notification previews. First identify where it is missing; then use the matching steps below.
Check the messaging app’s archive or trash
Start by opening the app you actually use for texting. Google Messages and Samsung Messages have different menus and behaviors; do not assume that an archive in one app is the same as another app’s trash.

Google Messages: check Archive
In Google Messages, look for the Archive area and check whether the conversation was moved out of the main list. An archived conversation is not necessarily locked or encrypted. Restore or unarchive it using the options shown in your installed version of the app.
Samsung Messages: check Trash if available
A Samsung Community response describes deleted conversations in Samsung Messages as appearing in Trash, where they may be restored. This is community guidance, and behavior can vary by app version, so inspect the current menus rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same Trash feature. Samsung notes that Samsung Messages may not come preinstalled on every Galaxy; in supported cases it can be downloaded from Galaxy Store: Samsung’s guide to Google Messages on Galaxy.

Look for Messages inside Secure Folder
Secure Folder is a protected area distinct from the regular Apps screen. If you used a messaging app inside it, that is a separate app instance: messages will appear there only if that instance was used or the content was placed there. Opening the regular Messages app does not automatically reveal Secure Folder conversations.
Unhide or open Secure Folder
- Use Quick Settings: Swipe down with two fingers to open Quick Settings and tap Secure Folder to hide or unhide it. If the tile is missing, edit Quick Settings and add it. Samsung documents this route for supported devices: Samsung: hide or show Secure Folder.
- Use Settings: Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder, authenticate, then enable Add Secure Folder to Apps screen. Exact labels and paths can vary by model and software version; Samsung’s regional guidance includes additional setup details: Samsung Canada: create a Secure Folder.
- Check its contents: Open Secure Folder, authenticate, and look for Messages. If that app instance was never used or the conversation was never placed there, it will not contain the missing thread.
Unlock Secure Folder if you have forgotten its credential
Use the PIN, password, pattern, or supported biometric option configured for Secure Folder. It may differ from the phone’s screen-lock credential. Samsung-account reset is available only if Reset with Samsung account was enabled for Secure Folder beforehand. If the reset option was not enabled and you cannot authenticate, Samsung says the documented option may be to remove Secure Folder and set it up again. Removing it could erase its contents. If the messages matter, contact Samsung support before taking a destructive step; do not rely on a bypass or assume the contents can be recovered. Feature availability also varies: some older models may not support Secure Folder, and support can differ by model, software, and market. See Samsung UK: Secure Folder overview.
Show message previews on the lock screen
If the conversation is present in the app but its text is hidden from the lock screen, adjust notification visibility rather than searching for a hidden thread. For Google Messages, Samsung gives this route: open Google Messages > profile icon > Messages settings > Notifications, then use Show or hide content when locked. Samsung’s general notification guidance also describes settings such as Hide content on lock screen or Lock screen notifications: Samsung: show or hide notification content. Names may differ on your device. Changing preview visibility does not restore a deleted conversation or move a message into another app.

Choose the right path for what is missing
- Conversation missing from the main message list: Check the Archive in Google Messages or, if present, Trash in Samsung Messages.
- Conversation expected in a protected area: Find and authenticate into Secure Folder, then check its separate Messages app.
- Message text missing only from the lock screen: Change the lock-screen notification content setting.
- Secure Folder opens but its credential is forgotten: Use Samsung-account reset only if it was enabled; contact Samsung before removing the folder if the data matters.
