To reduce CPU use in a 4K 60fps YouTube Live loop, switch OBS from x264 software encoding to a compatible hardware encoder if your system offers one. This offloads video encoding to specialized hardware, but it will not necessarily fix lag caused by GPU rendering, demanding scenes, filters, or an unstable upload connection.
Why 4K60 streaming can use so much CPU
With OBS’s x264 encoder, the CPU performs the video encoding work. A supported hardware encoder—such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync—moves that work to specialized hardware instead. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance, but the available choices depend on your hardware and operating system. OBS explains hardware-encoding options and compatibility.

Changing the encoder is the most direct first step when CPU encoding load is the problem. It does not guarantee that the whole stream will run smoothly: rendering a game or complex OBS scene, processing sources and filters, and maintaining the upload can remain bottlenecks.

- Open OBS’s output settings. Go to Settings > Output and inspect the encoder selected for streaming. Labels and available options can vary with OBS version and device.
- Check whether a supported hardware encoder is available. If the current encoder is x264, look for the option corresponding to hardware actually present in your system, such as NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync. Do not select NVENC unless your system offers it.
- Select the available hardware encoder and apply the change. There is no single preset that can be recommended for every GPU, scene, and operating system without knowing the system. Avoid changing several quality settings at once; that makes it harder to identify what helped.
- Test before the live event. Use the same scenes, sources, motion, and game workload you expect to use live. Compare CPU load and OBS’s rendering or encoding warnings during the test. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before going live.
There is an important compatibility exception: OBS says Intel Mac VideoToolbox does not support streaming because it lacks the constant-bitrate support most streaming services require, and directs those users to x264. Check the encoder documentation for your system rather than assuming every hardware-encoding option can stream. See OBS’s hardware-encoding compatibility guidance.

Set YouTube’s recommended 4K60 stream properties
These settings help match YouTube’s ingest recommendations; bitrate does not itself reduce CPU use. Choose the bitrate for the codec you are actually using, and only target it if your upload connection can sustain it reliably.
| Codec | YouTube’s recommended bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s current published ingest figures, accessed in 2026; they are not a guarantee that a particular connection, encoder, or scene will perform well. YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. Follow the settings for your chosen codec and streaming setup in YouTube’s encoder settings.

Diagnose lag that remains after switching encoders
If CPU encoding load falls but the stream still stutters or OBS reports problems, check whether the limit has shifted elsewhere. GPU rendering, scenes, filters, and upload stability can all matter. On NVIDIA systems, NVIDIA’s guide flags GPU utilization above 95% as a possible cause of stream lag; treat that as vendor guidance, not a universal diagnostic threshold.
- GPU utilization is high, especially during a game: NVIDIA suggests limiting in-game frame rate or lowering game graphics settings or resolution. These are system-specific possibilities, not guaranteed fixes. Its guide also discusses Windows Game Mode and GPU scheduling where applicable. Read NVIDIA’s broadcasting guidance.
- OBS shows rendering or encoding problems: Repeat a representative test and note whether the issue appears with a particular source, filter, scene, or workload. Simplify or reduce the demanding element, then retest so you can isolate the cause.
- The stream drops or YouTube reports poor stream health: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, and test upload speed before the event. A lower bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain the target, but it does not offload encoding from the CPU.
- You are streaming 4K and looking for lower latency: YouTube’s published guidance says its low-latency improvement is unavailable for 4K/2160p; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. YouTube also transcodes live streams into viewer output formats. Check YouTube’s current live encoder and latency guidance.
