How to Switch Radio Programs on a YouTube Livestream Automatically

YouTube schedules the live event, but OBS or a playout system must switch the program. Learn how to set up and rehearse automatic handoffs.

YouTube Studio schedules the livestream event; it does not decide which radio program your encoder sends. To switch programs automatically, schedule the change in your playout system or in OBS. In an OBS setup, use separate scenes or media sources for each program and automate the handoff with Advanced Scene Switcher date/time macros. Rehearse the change and check the outgoing feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room before leaving it unattended.

What YouTube can schedule—and what it cannot

YouTube Studio lets you create or schedule the viewer-facing live event and obtain the stream URL and key your encoder needs. The encoder sends the audio and video feed; the event scheduler does not select the radio program within that feed. YouTube Help describes the purpose of scheduling this way: “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream.” YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover connecting the encoder with the server URL and stream key. The YouTube Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes the viewer-facing broadcast from the live stream carrying the audio/video.

So, if you want one continuous livestream to move from a morning show to music and then to an evening program, automate the content handoff in OBS or in a playout system that can reliably control the outgoing feed. YouTube remains responsible for the event and its metadata, privacy, and stream settings.

Choose how the programs will change in OBS

Use one scene per program

Create a scene for each program, with its own audio source and any program-specific visuals, such as a title card or cover art. This makes it easier to inspect which audio and visuals belong to each program. Your automation can select the scene at the scheduled time.

  • Sleek, 1RU design allows for installation flexibility in a rack, cabinet or on a shelf.
  • nstantaneous, intuitive control from a touch screen, remote, or TV on-screen navigator.

Keep one scene and change its media

If the programs share a visual layout, keep a single scene and automate the media source instead. This can simplify a consistent layout, but you must make sure the automation changes the actual audio or media being sent—not merely a source that is hidden or muted.

Neither layout is universally right. Configure the macros for the scenes, sources, and controls in your own OBS project, then verify what viewers will hear and see.

Set up automatic program changes with OBS

  1. Schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the livestream. Copy the stream URL and stream key for the encoder, and set the event’s title, privacy, and other metadata there. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the event.
  2. Prepare the program sources. In OBS, add each program’s audio and visual elements. Either build a separate scene for each program or configure a shared scene with the media source that will change. Check source visibility, audio levels, and mute states.
  3. Install a compatible Advanced Scene Switcher version. The plugin listing currently specifies OBS Studio 31.1.1 or newer as a requirement and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Check the listing against your installed OBS version before installing: Advanced Scene Switcher.
  4. Create date/time macros. In Advanced Scene Switcher, create a macro for each scheduled handoff. Pair the relevant date/time condition with an action that selects the intended scene or changes the intended media/source. The plugin documents date/time and media conditions, along with scene, source, and media actions. Set the dates and times carefully, including the time zone used for the schedule.
  5. Start and verify the automation. Confirm the scene switcher is active when the stream starts. Check that each macro is enabled and that its action targets the right scene or source. If an external controller is involved, OBS Studio’s built-in WebSocket integration is available from OBS Studio 28 onward; enable authentication and protect the password, as OBS recommends. See OBS’s remote-control guide.
  6. Rehearse the whole handoff. Test each transition with the real scenes and media. Listen for silence, overlapping audio, or the wrong program; inspect the visuals; and check the outgoing feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm the selected broadcast, stream key, time zone, and next scheduled change before depending on unattended operation.

Choose the right switching arrangement

  • OBS macros: A practical fit when the programs and stream are already arranged in OBS. The macros can select scenes or control sources at specified dates and times.
  • Existing station playout: If your radio playout system already handles schedules, it may be preferable to keep scheduling there, provided it can reliably supply or control the outgoing stream. Compatibility with every station system is not established; confirm the integration for your own setup.
  • One continuing event or separate broadcasts: A single ongoing livestream can keep a continuous viewer experience across programs. Separate scheduled events can make programs individually discoverable. Which format suits a station depends on its audience and publishing needs; YouTube’s event scheduling alone does not perform the content handoff.

Troubleshoot missed or incorrect program changes

  • The program does not change: Check that Advanced Scene Switcher is running, the relevant macro is enabled, its date/time condition is correct, and the action targets an existing scene or source.
  • The change happens at the wrong time: Compare the macro’s time zone and date with the schedule you intended. Rehearse a transition at a controlled time before relying on the full timetable.
  • The picture changes but the audio does not: Inspect the new scene’s audio source, source visibility, and mute state. If using one scene, verify that the macro controls the media or audio source actually feeding the stream.
  • The wrong program appears: Review the action assigned to that time condition and test the transition with the exact media and scenes used on air.
  • YouTube shows no expected feed: Check that OBS is sending to the intended scheduled broadcast with the correct stream key, and inspect the outgoing feed in Live Control Room.
  • An external controller cannot control OBS: Confirm WebSocket access is configured and authenticated correctly. Keep the password protected; do not expose remote control without authentication.
