How to Reduce CPU Usage When OBS Loops Recorded Lessons 24/7 on YouTube

A practical diagnosis-first guide to looping lessons in OBS, reducing avoidable workload, choosing an encoder, and checking YouTube delivery settings.

To reduce CPU use, first confirm the lesson is looping correctly, then check whether OBS is using software encoding. If a compatible hardware encoder is available, test it; simplify the scene and match the lesson file and output settings to the quality you actually need. Measure each change in OBS Stats rather than assuming that bitrate or a new device is the cause.

What uses resources in a 24/7 OBS stream?

OBS handles several distinct jobs: decoding and playing the lesson, composing the scene, encoding the video, and sending it to YouTube. The encoder is only one part of the workload. A hardware encoder can take some encoding work off the CPU, but OBS still has to render the scene, and media decoding and other applications also use system resources.

OBS’s own performance guidance identifies encoder choice, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors that affect performance. There is no universal CPU target or guaranteed percentage reduction: the result depends on the computer, media, scene, and settings.

Set up the lesson loop first

Use OBS’s built-in playback source rather than installing a separate looping utility. Choose the source based on whether you have one lesson file or a playlist.

Loop one lesson file

  1. In the scene where the lesson should appear, add a Media Source.
  2. Select the lesson file and enable Loop in the source properties.
  3. Preview the scene and let the file reach its end once to confirm playback starts again.

Loop a playlist

  1. Add a VLC Video source and add the lesson files to its playlist.
  2. Enable Loop Playlist.
  3. Confirm the playlist advances through the files and restarts as expected.

VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you only need to repeat one file, Media Source avoids that additional VLC requirement.

Establish a baseline before changing settings

  1. In OBS, note the selected encoder, output resolution, frame rate, active scene sources, and filters.
  2. Open View > Stats and note the CPU reading and any rendering or encoding lag while the lesson is playing.
  3. Check the operating system’s process monitor as well. Total system CPU use is not necessarily all caused by OBS.
  4. Change one setting at a time, then compare OBS Stats and system utilization under the same playback conditions.

This helps distinguish an encoding bottleneck from scene-rendering work, media playback, or another application. Keep an eye on visual quality and dropped frames as well as CPU use.

Test a compatible hardware encoder

If OBS is using x264, it is encoding in software on the CPU. Check the encoder choices available in Settings > Output and test a hardware option supported by your computer. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox; availability depends on the operating system and hardware generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record your current encoder and stream behavior as a baseline.
  2. Select a compatible hardware encoder in OBS Output settings and apply the change.
  3. Run a private or otherwise controlled test at your intended output resolution and frame rate.
  4. Compare CPU use, encoding lag, dropped frames, and the resulting picture with the baseline.

Hardware encoders can reduce CPU encoding work, but their quality and performance vary by generation. A hardware encoder is a diagnostic option, not proof that the CPU is the only bottleneck or that all CPU use will disappear. If the picture is unsuitable or the stream less stable, revert to the previous setting and investigate scene rendering or playback instead.

Remove unnecessary scene work and right-size the video

  • Remove unused sources and filters. Browser sources, effects, and other active scene elements can add rendering work even though they are not part of the lesson itself.
  • Use media close to the intended stream resolution. A 4K lesson file may require unnecessary decoding and scaling when the actual output is smaller. Keep the detail your learners need, but avoid oversizing every source by default.
  • Lower output resolution if needed. This reduces detail, so check text, diagrams, and on-screen demonstrations at the new size.
  • Try 30 fps if 60 fps is not needed or is not working well. For mostly static lessons, lower frame rate may be an acceptable trade-off; motion-heavy demonstrations may benefit from a higher rate.

Resolution and frame rate affect performance, but CPU impact depends on what is overloaded. Reduce one setting at a time and inspect both OBS Stats and the lesson’s legibility.

Match YouTube delivery settings to the output

Bitrate primarily sets the outgoing data rate; it is not a direct CPU-usage control. Choose it for the output resolution, frame rate, codec, and reliable upload capacity. Google / YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommendations for the listed 30 fps modes:

  • For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says, “Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.”
  • Test before the public broadcast, then watch stream health and any messages in YouTube’s Live Control Room.

Do not lower bitrate expecting it by itself to fix a CPU bottleneck. If CPU or rendering is the problem, investigate the encoder, scene, resolution, and frame rate.

Validate the setup for unattended operation

A setting that works for a short preview is not automatically dependable for continuous broadcasting. Run a representative extended test before relying on the setup, and check for reconnects, stream-health warnings, interruptions in file playback, and excessive heat. Confirm the lesson still loops after a file boundary and that YouTube receives the stream consistently.

There is also an archive limit to plan around: Google / YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that a single 24-hour encoder session will produce one complete archive. Check current Live Control Room behavior and plan sessions around your archive needs.

Troubleshooting common symptoms

Symptom What to check Practical next step
High CPU with x264 selected Whether a compatible hardware encoder appears in OBS Output settings Test it under the intended stream settings and compare CPU, lag, and picture quality.
High CPU remains after changing encoders Scene sources, filters, media resolution, other applications, and OBS Stats Remove unnecessary scene work and right-size the source before considering hardware changes.
Encoding or rendering lag Whether the encoder or scene renderer is falling behind; output resolution and FPS Reduce scene complexity or test a lower output resolution or 30 fps, one change at a time.
Stream health warnings or unstable delivery Whether the chosen bitrate matches codec and output mode and whether upload capacity is reliable Use YouTube’s relevant bitrate recommendation, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; test before going live.
Playlist does not loop or VLC source is unavailable VLC installation and 32-/64-bit compatibility Install the VLC version matching OBS architecture, or use Media Source for a single file.

When should you upgrade the computer?

Do not buy a GPU or other device based only on a high CPU reading. First identify the active encoder, OBS lag indicators, output mode, scene workload, and other processes. An upgrade is only supportable once those details show a specific limitation—for example, software encoding is the bottleneck and the machine lacks a suitable hardware encoder. Without the computer’s processor, graphics hardware, operating system, OBS settings, and measured utilization, naming a particular upgrade would be guesswork.
