How to Reduce CPU Usage and Audio Crackling in FL Studio

A diagnostic sequence for FL Studio crackling: check the driver and buffer first, then test multithreading, Smart Disable, plugins, routing, and autosave.

To reduce crackling in FL Studio, first select a suitable audio driver and increase the buffer until playback is stable. Then enable multithreaded processing, use Smart Disable where appropriate, and identify project sections or plugins that are consuming too much processing time. A larger buffer can fix live audio dropouts, but it does not reduce the project’s underlying workload—and it adds latency.

Why is FL Studio crackling?

During live playback, FL Studio prepares audio in segments and sends them to your audio device. The buffer gives it time to prepare each segment. If FL Studio cannot generate the next segment before the buffer runs out, the audio may crackle or stutter; Image-Line calls this a buffer underrun. Its CPU meter shows how much of the available buffer time is needed to generate audio, not the computer’s overall CPU percentage. A reading near 100% means little time remains. Image-Line’s Audio Settings manual and CPU & Memory Panel documentation explain these measures.

Look at the underrun count alongside what you hear: Image-Line notes that the count can increase while loading a project or plugins without indicating an audible playback problem. If the finished render crackles too, do not assume a live buffer underrun is responsible; a misbehaving plugin may be involved. The Audio Settings manual distinguishes render and live-playback issues.

Work through the fixes in order

1. Select a suitable audio driver

Open Options > Audio settings and try the driver appropriate to your operating system and device. On Windows, Image-Line recommends FL Studio ASIO when you are not using a suitable ASIO driver supplied for your audio device. If your audio interface or other device has its own suitable driver, try that. Image-Line’s Setup wizard documentation recommends Built-in Audio on Mac.

  • Made for FL Studio: Play instruments, create sequences, build tracks with Patterns, and take control of your mix
  • Play basslines and melodies: The 25 synth-action mini-keys are ideal for sketching your ideas — pitch and mod touch strips offer added expression
  • Lay down beats: 16 velocity-sensitive pads are perfect for step sequencing in the Channel Rack and finger drumming with FPC, Slicex, or Fruity Slicer
  • Mix your tracks: Fine-tune levels, sweep filters, dial in effects, and more. Everything maps directly to the eight knobs
  • No chord packs needed: Easily lay down chord progressions, melodies, and patterns with built-in Scale and Chord modes, plus a powerful arpeggiator

An audio interface supplies audio inputs and outputs; its driver suitability depends on the device and operating system. A USB interface with a manufacturer-supplied ASIO driver may be worth considering if the current device or driver is limiting your setup, but new hardware cannot be expected to fix a CPU-heavy project by itself.

2. Raise the buffer until playback is stable

In Options > Audio settings, increase Buffer length and test playback. If the crackling stops, lower the buffer only as far as needed for responsive playing and monitoring. A longer buffer gives FL Studio more time to prepare audio, but increases the delay between playing or monitoring a sound and hearing it.

Image-Line gives roughly 20–40 ms as a starting point for its Primary Sound Driver setup instructions; this is guidance for that setup, not a universal target for every driver or project. The smallest stable buffer depends on your computer, driver, device, and project. Image-Line’s Primary Sound Driver setup page describes the starting range and latency trade-off.

3. Turn on multithreaded processing, then check exceptions

In Options > Audio settings, enable Multithreaded generator processing and Multithreaded mixer processing. For VST plugins, also check the plugin wrapper’s Allow threaded processing setting. Some third-party plugins may perform worse or become unstable with threading enabled, so test playback after changing the settings.

If one plugin is the problem, try disabling threaded processing for that plugin rather than turning off multithreading globally. Image-Line documents the wrapper setting in its Mixer Explained manual and plugin troubleshooting guide.

4. Use Smart Disable selectively

Smart Disable can stop inactive instruments and effects from processing during live playback. The global option depends on the Smart Disable setting in each plugin wrapper; Image-Line documents a macro for enabling it across plugins. Test time-based or long-decay effects carefully: disabling one at the wrong point can cut off a tail or cause a timing issue. Smart Disable is temporarily disabled during rendering, so it is a live-playback optimization rather than a render-time processing reduction. See Audio Settings and the performance optimization guidance.

5. Find and reduce project-specific processing demand

If the buffer and driver are not enough, identify the instruments, effects, or sections that push the project toward underruns. A low overall CPU percentage does not rule out a bottleneck: dependent mixer routing can limit how effectively work is spread across cores.

  • Review time-stretched clips. Image-Line notes that many clips using Stretch or Stretch Pro can use more CPU than Resample. Where it suits the sound and workflow, stretch audio offline rather than relying on real-time stretching.
  • Make parallel processing possible. Where practical, route demanding instruments and effects to independent mixer tracks. Linked tracks and shared sends create dependencies that can limit parallel processing.
  • Check for intermittent autosave spikes. Image-Line cautions that Frequent and Very frequent autosave settings can cause underruns when a save occurs during playback, particularly in larger projects. If glitches are intermittent rather than tied to a particular sound or section, avoid those modes and retest.

These project-level recommendations are covered in Image-Line’s FL Studio performance optimization manual.

6. Isolate a plugin-specific fault

If one plugin consistently causes trouble, change one wrapper setting at a time and retest. Image-Line’s “Plugins behaving badly” guide identifies these options:

  • Try the wrapper’s Fixed size buffers option.
  • Test that plugin’s Smart Disable setting.
  • Toggle its Allow threaded processing setting.
  • Try Align tick lengths as a troubleshooting toggle.
  • Check bridged mode or try another available plugin format.

These are diagnostic options, not universal fixes: changing them can create other plugin problems. If the issue happens only in the render, compare rendered output while testing the suspect plugin rather than treating a larger live buffer as the solution.

Choose settings by the problem you need to solve

Change Best suited to Trade-off or limit
Increase buffer length Live crackling or stuttering that improves with more preparation time More delay for live input and monitoring; does not lower the project’s underlying processing demand
Enable multithreaded processing Workloads that can be shared across cores Some third-party plugins may behave worse; per-plugin exceptions may be needed
Enable Smart Disable Reducing live processing by inactive instruments and effects Can affect time-based or long-decay effects; temporarily disabled during rendering
Change driver or audio device A setup where the current device or driver is unsuitable Compatibility depends on the operating system and device; it is not a guaranteed fix for CPU-heavy projects
Optimize routing, stretching, or autosave Project-specific bottlenecks, dependent routing, or intermittent playback spikes Results depend on the project and may require changes to routing or workflow
