The date is specific to the device, so check the Chromebook itself rather than estimating from its age or a general policy.
Find your Chromebook’s update schedule
- Turn on the Chromebook and select the time area in the lower-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- At the bottom of the settings navigation, select About ChromeOS.
- Select Additional details.
- Under Update schedule, read the date through which the device is scheduled to receive automatic updates. Google’s screen wording may say, “This device will get automatic updates until [specified date].” Google’s instructions for checking the update schedule explain this path.
This is different from selecting Check for updates, which checks whether a ChromeOS update is available now. It does not tell you when the device’s automatic updates are scheduled to end.

What the date tells you—and what happens afterward
The date shown is the schedule for that particular Chromebook. Google’s policy says ChromeOS devices receive ten years of updates and lists dates by model, but the broad policy is not a substitute for the date shown on your device. You can also look up the model in Google’s Auto Update policy.

Some apps may also be affected if they require a particular ChromeOS or browser version. Google says a working Chromebook can still be used, but it will not receive further software updates; switching to a newer Chromebook is another option. Google’s guidance for older Chromebooks describes the implications and options.

If the Chromebook is managed by work or school
If the schedule page says updates are managed by an administrator rather than showing a date, contact your work or school administrator. The device’s update policy may be managed by the organization, so the administrator is the right person to confirm its schedule.
If the listed date has passed
The Chromebook may continue to work, but it will no longer receive automatic software and security updates. You can continue using a working device with that limitation or choose a newer Chromebook. If you are considering a replacement, check its official automatic-update end date before buying; Google specifically advises buyers to consider that date.
