GTA 5 has three separate causes of an uncomfortable or blurry view: first-person camera motion, motion blur applied during movement, and depth-of-field blur that softens distant scenery or focus transitions. They use different controls. Open Pause Menu → Settings, then choose the fix that matches what you see: disable First Person Ragdoll, First Person Combat Rolls and Head Bobbing for first-person shake; on PC, lower Motion blur strength to its minimum; and disable In-game Depth of Field Effects if the background remains soft. Switching to third person is the broadest way to avoid first-person camera movement.
Identify which effect is bothering you
“Camera shake” and “motion blur” are often used interchangeably, but GTA 5 treats them as different effects. A correct diagnosis prevents you from changing a graphics option when the problem is actually a first-person animation.

| What you see | Likely effect | Relevant control | Where documented | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The view jolts when you are hit, stumble or perform a first-person movement. | First-person camera motion | First Person Ragdoll, First Person Combat Rolls and Head Bobbing | PC, PlayStation and Xbox settings guidance from Rockstar | Less intense first-person movement, with less of the physical sensation intended by the animations. |
| The whole image smears while you turn or move the camera. | Motion blur post-processing | Motion blur strength | PC graphics menu | A steadier image, but less cinematic movement. |
| Distant scenery or objects outside the current focus look soft even when the camera is still. | Depth-of-field blur | In-game Depth of Field Effects | PC graphics menu | More uniformly sharp scenery and fewer focus transitions. |
| You want to avoid first-person movement altogether. | Camera perspective | Switch to third person | PC, PlayStation and Xbox perspective controls | You lose the first-person viewpoint but remove first-person camera effects. |
Use the first row when the image physically jolts. Use the second when movement leaves a smear across the entire scene. Use the third when only the background or focus transition looks soft. These symptoms can occur together, so apply more than one change when necessary.

- Pause GTA 5.
- Choose Settings.
- For first-person movement, open the controls or camera-related options and look for the three first-person toggles described below.
- For image softness caused by post-processing on PC, open the graphics options.
- Apply one change at a time when diagnosing the problem, then move the camera in the same situation that originally caused discomfort.
Changing a camera toggle and changing a graphics effect solve different problems. If you change both at once, the view may improve, but you will not know which setting addressed the symptom.
Reduce first-person camera shake
Disable First Person Ragdoll
When your character is hit in first person, ragdoll reactions can move the camera with the body. Rockstar’s game tips state that turning off First Person Ragdoll decreases the amount of camera motion experienced when you are hit. This is the most targeted change if impacts, crashes or melee attacks make the view lurch.
- Open Pause Menu → Settings.
- Find the first-person camera or control options.
- Set First Person Ragdoll to Off.
- Return to the same activity that caused the jolt and check whether impact motion is reduced.
This option addresses camera movement tied to being hit. It does not turn off the separate blur that can be applied while you rotate the camera, and it does not control softness in distant scenery.
Disable First Person Combat Rolls
Combat rolls can create a strong first-person motion effect during firefights. Rockstar says that toggling off First Person Combat Rolls minimizes some of the more intense first-person motion effects. Turn it off if the discomfort is associated with evasive rolls rather than impacts.
- Remain in the first-person camera settings reached through Pause Menu → Settings.
- Set First Person Combat Rolls to Off.
- Test a short firefight or another situation in which you normally roll.
The setting changes how the first-person view presents combat rolls; it is not a general graphics-quality control. If the camera still moves heavily when you are struck, keep this change and also disable First Person Ragdoll.

- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
Disable Head Bobbing
Head Bobbing adds movement as the character walks or runs. Rockstar identifies it as another first-person option that can minimize intense motion when toggled off. It is the appropriate adjustment when ordinary traversal, rather than combat, makes the view feel unsteady.
- Open Pause Menu → Settings.
- Locate Head Bobbing in the first-person camera options.
- Set it to Off.
- Walk and sprint in first person to judge the result.
Head Bobbing does not remove post-processing blur. A view can remain sharp but still move with the character, or remain stable while still showing blur during a quick turn. Treat those as separate symptoms.

Use third-person view when you want the least first-person motion
Switching perspective avoids the first-person movement effects as a category. Rockstar documents these default perspective controls:
| Platform | Default control to change perspective |
|---|---|
| PC | V |
| PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 | Touchpad |
| Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One | Select |
Press the platform’s perspective button during gameplay to cycle to third person. Third person changes the viewpoint rather than disabling a single animation, so it is useful when several first-person effects are uncomfortable at once. It does not, by itself, turn off PC motion blur or depth-of-field processing.
Reduce motion blur on PC
On PC, GTA 5 exposes a dedicated Motion blur strength slider in the graphics menu. Lower it to its minimum when the entire scene smears during a camera turn or movement. This is a post-processing adjustment, not a first-person control.
Rank #3
- Pause the game and choose Settings.
- Open the Graphics options.
- Find Motion blur strength.
- Move the slider to its minimum value.
- Apply the setting if your build presents an Apply or Confirm prompt, then return to gameplay.
- Rotate the camera at the speed that normally produces a smear and compare the image.
The PC references describe the slider as a way to reduce the effect; the available material does not establish a universal full-disable switch for every console or enhanced-edition build. If your PC menu uses a numeric scale, choose its lowest displayed value rather than assuming a particular number.

Understand the Post FX relationship
NVIDIA describes motion blur as part of the Post FX group and notes that Motion Blur and In-Game Depth of Field Effects are tied to Very High or Ultra Post FX settings. This means the post-processing quality level can affect which advanced effects are available or how they behave. A lower Motion blur strength is still the direct control for blur caused by camera movement; changing Post FX is a broader image-quality decision.
If the slider is missing, locked or behaves differently after changing the overall preset, check the Post FX value and the options exposed by your edition. Do not infer that raising Post FX will improve clarity: higher post-processing quality can keep additional effects active, while the goal here is a steadier image.
Turn off depth-of-field blur on PC
Depth of field is separate from camera shake and motion blur. It can make distant scenery, background objects or focus transitions look soft while the camera is stationary. PC graphics settings include an In-game Depth of Field Effects on/off option.
- Open Pause Menu → Settings → Graphics.
- Find In-game Depth of Field Effects.
- Set the option to Off.
- Look toward distant buildings, roads and scenery while standing still.
If the distant view becomes clearer, depth of field was the source of that softness. If the image still smears only when you turn, revisit Motion blur strength instead. Turning off depth of field will not stop a camera from jolting when the character is hit, because that movement is controlled by the first-person options.

Platform-specific guidance
PC
PC players can address all three categories documented here: first-person movement toggles, Motion blur strength and In-game Depth of Field Effects. A practical sequence is to disable the first-person options that match your symptom, set Motion blur strength to its minimum, and then turn off depth of field if stationary backgrounds remain soft. Test after each change so you can retain any cinematic effect you still enjoy.
PlayStation
Rockstar’s settings and perspective guidance covers PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Use Pause Menu → Settings for the first-person camera options, and press the Touchpad to change perspective using the default control. The cited console guidance does not establish a complete motion-blur disable switch equivalent to the PC slider for every PlayStation edition. Check the graphics menu in your specific build and use only the options it actually displays.
Xbox
Rockstar’s guidance covers Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Open Pause Menu → Settings for the first-person options, and press Select to change perspective with the default control. As with PlayStation, the available material does not establish a full motion-blur disable control for every Xbox or enhanced-edition build. If no Motion blur strength option appears, the first-person toggles and third-person perspective remain the documented ways to reduce camera movement.
Why editions can differ
GTA 5 has been released in different platform and enhanced editions. Menu labels, graphics controls and default bindings can vary. The presence of a setting in a PC reference does not guarantee that the same setting exists on a console version. Verify the exact option names shown by your installation before promising that blur can be completely removed.

Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Jolt when hit or moving in first person: turn off First Person Ragdoll, First Person Combat Rolls and Head Bobbing as applicable. Start with the option that matches the trigger.
- Smear across the whole image during a camera turn on PC: set Motion blur strength to its minimum in Graphics.
- Soft background while standing still: turn off In-game Depth of Field Effects on PC.
- Several first-person effects remain uncomfortable: switch to third person with V on PC, Touchpad on PlayStation 5/4 or Select on Xbox Series X|S/One.
- No matching option appears: confirm the platform and edition, then use the controls that are actually present. Do not substitute a Post FX preset for a dedicated control unless you understand that it changes other processing too.
Check one symptom at a time
Choose a repeatable test: stand still and inspect distant scenery for depth-of-field softness; rotate the camera to check movement smear; then deliberately enter a first-person combat or traversal situation to check camera motion. This separates image processing from animation-driven movement.
Restore the cinematic look selectively
These changes are reversible. You can leave Head Bobbing off while restoring depth of field, or keep Motion blur at a low value while retaining first-person combat movement. Selective changes preserve the effects that do not cause discomfort instead of forcing every visual option to its least active state.
Recommended setting choices by goal
| Goal | First-person options | PC graphics options | Perspective |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop impact jolts | First Person Ragdoll Off | Change only if blur is also present | Remain in first person or switch if needed |
| Reduce combat movement | First Person Combat Rolls Off; add First Person Ragdoll Off for hit reactions | Change only if the image smears | Either view |
| Make walking steadier | Head Bobbing Off | Change only if blur is also present | Either view |
| Keep the image sharp during camera turns on PC | Leave these unchanged unless movement itself is uncomfortable | Motion blur strength at minimum | Either view |
| Keep distant scenery sharp on PC | Unchanged unless first-person motion is the issue | In-game Depth of Field Effects Off | Either view |
| Avoid first-person motion altogether | Not applicable | Optional PC blur and depth-of-field changes | Third person |
What these fixes cannot guarantee
The documented controls reduce specific effects; they do not promise that every source of movement or softness disappears. A character animation, vehicle movement or camera transition can still move the viewpoint even after the three first-person toggles are off. Likewise, console editions may not expose the same motion-blur slider documented for PC. The safest expectation is a reduction targeted to the symptom you selected.
