Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFirst identify where the buffering happens: OBS dropped frames and YouTube stream-health warnings point to trouble sending the stream to YouTube; stalls on only one viewer’s device may have a different cause. For an always-on stream, check the outgoing bitrate, encoder settings and network path before blaming or upgrading the NAS. Investigate NAS processing only if it is encoding or transcoding the video.
Find out which part of the stream is buffering
A YouTube live stream has at least two relevant legs: the encoder sends video to YouTube, and YouTube delivers playback to viewers. A problem on one leg does not establish a problem on the other.

Check OBS and YouTube while the stream is live
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter. OBS explains that increasing dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing; this signal concerns the encoder-to-service connection, not every viewer’s playback. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide and its dropped-frames explanation.

Also check YouTube’s stream-health messages in Live Control Room. YouTube can report configuration problems, and its health states distinguish conditions such as good, ok, bad and noData. Treat the current warning as a clue to investigate rather than assuming every buffering report has the same cause. The YouTube Live Streams API health-status documentation describes those statuses and configuration issues.

Ask whether the issue affects every viewer
If OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube flags the incoming stream, start with the encoder, bitrate and network path. If the incoming stream looks healthy but playback stalls for only one viewer, the encoder signal alone cannot identify that viewer’s cause. Compare another device or connection before changing NAS hardware.
Reduce the outgoing bitrate to what the connection can sustain
YouTube recommends choosing a quality that can produce a reliable stream on the available internet connection and suggests an upload-speed test. Compare the selected encoder bitrate with stable upload capacity, not just a single peak result; other household traffic can also compete for upload bandwidth. If OBS is dropping frames, lower the bitrate and test again.
OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point when deciding whether the connection can support a bitrate. It is not a guarantee, nor a YouTube-mandated setting. Use it as a conservative initial check, then observe stream health under representative conditions. YouTube’s guidance is on its live encoder settings help page.

Use the recommendation for your actual codec and output
YouTube’s currently maintained live encoder page lists these recommended bitrates. Select the row matching the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send; the figures are technical recommendations, not a promise that a particular home connection will be stable.
| Ingest codec | Output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are selected rows, not a complete list of every resolution and frame rate. Consult YouTube’s encoder table for the exact output you use. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, so a creator’s chosen ingest bitrate is not the same as a viewer’s playback bitrate.
Check the encoder settings and stream-health warnings
Use YouTube’s listed live-encoder settings as a baseline: RTMP or RTMPS transport, a supported H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 codec, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. A keyframe interval longer than four seconds is identified as a buffering risk in YouTube’s API documentation.

Do not change every setting at once. Match bitrate to the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate, confirm the keyframe interval, and read the specific Live Control Room warning. A bitrate or keyframe warning calls for a different fix than a dropped-frame counter caused by an unstable network path.
Stabilize the connection between the encoder and YouTube
If the encoder or the device supplying it is on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet where practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. A cable is not automatically the problem: inspect the full path, including cable seating, router, switch, network card, extenders and other devices. OBS lists these as possible fault points.
Make one change at a time and test again. That makes it easier to tell whether the change helped. For persistent dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, OBS’s troubleshooting guide also suggests checking network-optimization settings, VPN or security-software interference, drivers and hardware, and testing another ingest server or service where available. If those checks do not resolve the problem, contact your internet service provider.

Check the NAS only if it processes the video
A NAS can play different roles in a home streaming setup: it may simply store a video file, supply that file to another encoder, or encode or transcode it itself. The title alone does not identify which arrangement you have. If the NAS only stores media or supplies a file, its processor is not established as the cause of dropped frames between the encoder and YouTube.
If the NAS is actively encoding or transcoding, check whether that job can sustain real-time output. Plex notes that its server can buffer when it cannot transcode quickly enough and that many home NAS devices have limited processors. That guidance concerns Plex playback and transcoding; it does not prove a NAS CPU is responsible for YouTube ingest buffering in a different setup. See Plex’s transcoding guidance.
Test before relying on an always-on configuration
YouTube recommends a pre-stream test that includes audio and movement similar to the actual stream, plus monitoring stream health during the event. Apply that advice to the NAS workflow: test representative content, the intended resolution and frame rate, and the normal network conditions before leaving a stream running for a long period. This can reveal whether the configuration is stable under the workload, but it does not establish a universal uptime guarantee.
Common buffering symptoms and fixes
- OBS dropped frames are increasing: the encoder-to-service connection may be unstable or unable to carry the configured bitrate. Check upload stability and household traffic, lower the bitrate, and retest.
- YouTube reports a bitrate or keyframe issue: match the bitrate to the actual codec and output, use CBR, and confirm a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.
- The encoder uses Wi-Fi: try Ethernet and retest before buying equipment. If the problem persists on a wired link, inspect the cable and router or switch path.
- Only one viewer reports playback stalls: do not infer a NAS or encoder fault from that alone. Compare playback on another device or network and check YouTube’s incoming stream health.
- The NAS is encoding or transcoding: check whether it can process the workload in real time. If it is only storing or supplying the file, the Plex transcoding advice does not establish a NAS CPU problem.
- Dropped frames continue after bitrate and network checks: follow OBS’s checks for VPN or security software, network optimization, drivers and hardware; contact the ISP if needed.
