If a YouTube stream stalls when your router renews an IP address, first establish which address renewed: the router’s ISP-facing WAN address or a device’s private LAN address. A stall at the same time is a useful clue, but it does not prove DHCP renewal caused the interruption. Check router logs against the stall time, see whether other devices and services also lost access, and test the stream over another connection before changing settings or buying equipment.
What “the router renewed its IP” can mean
There are two separate DHCP relationships that are easy to confuse:

- WAN lease: The router receives an address from the ISP on its internet-facing connection. A WAN link interruption, modem reconnection, or router issue around renewal can affect every device in the home.
- LAN lease: A phone, computer, TV, or other device receives a private address from the router. A LAN lease renewal does not, by itself, establish that the router’s internet connection dropped.
Microsoft’s DHCP troubleshooting guidance describes a client sending a unicast renewal request after 50 percent of its lease time. That timing is a description of DHCP behavior, not evidence that a YouTube stream should disconnect or that a router’s WAN renewal caused a particular stall. There is no universal lease timer or setting established here that safely prevents this symptom.
Diagnose the interruption before changing settings
1. Record the exact stall time
Note when playback stopped, whether it recovered by itself, and whether the interruption affected a live stream or ordinary video playback. If possible, record the time in the router’s time zone and make sure the router clock is correct; accurate timestamps make its event log much more useful.

2. Check the router’s WAN status and event log
Look for entries at or immediately around the stall: WAN lease renewal, a changed WAN address, link down/up, modem reconnection or resynchronization, and router reboot. Menu names vary by router; look under internet, WAN, connection status, system log, or event log. Check whether the address shown is the ISP-facing WAN address rather than a device’s private LAN address.
A renewal entry alone is not proof of a fault. Stronger evidence is a repeated match between the stall and a WAN disconnect, address change, or reconnection. A NETGEAR Community post describes one R7400 owner reporting WAN disconnections on renewal; that individual report does not establish how other routers behave.

3. Compare other devices and services
- While the stream is stalled, check whether other devices can reach the internet.
- Try another site or service to see whether the disruption is limited to YouTube or affects the connection more broadly.
- Reopen YouTube and replay the video, then compare playback on another supported device.
- If available, replay over a different internet connection, such as mobile data. YouTube’s Help guidance recommends changing the internet connection and replaying the video when troubleshooting buffering or loading problems.
If only one device is affected, investigate that device’s connection and YouTube app before treating the event as a WAN failure. If multiple devices lose access at once and the router log records a WAN event, the router, modem, or ISP connection deserves closer attention.

Follow the router maker’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance to check its WAN/internet status and cabling, and to distinguish a router, modem, or ISP problem. Keep firmware current only by following the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model and hardware revision. TP-Link says firmware updates address stability problems on specific models; that is not evidence that an update will fix every renewal-related interruption.

5. Escalate with timestamps and logs
If WAN loss repeatedly coincides with renewal, send the router maker or ISP the router model and hardware revision, firmware version, relevant WAN log entries, and precise stall and recovery times. Ask whether the logs indicate a lease event, physical/link interruption, modem resynchronization, or reboot. Without those details, it is not possible to identify the cause on an individual network.
What to try—and what not to assume
For ordinary buffering or loading trouble, YouTube recommends checking the internet connection, trying another connection, and comparing another supported device. Its Help page gives 7 Mbps as a recommended minimum connection speed for HD streaming on TV. That is a general TV playback recommendation, not a target for fixing DHCP renewal or diagnosing a WAN interruption.

Do not set a streaming device to a static LAN address as a presumed fix for a WAN-side renewal: those are different leases. Nor do the available manufacturer and YouTube guidance establish that a faster internet plan, Ethernet cable, UPS, or streaming stick will cure a WAN DHCP renewal fault. First use logs and comparison tests to locate the failure.

If logs confirm recurring loss of the primary WAN and you need network redundancy, a compatible router configured with a second live internet service can switch connections when it detects the primary link is down. This is a continuity measure, not a repair for the renewal fault. A handoff can interrupt existing sessions, so it cannot guarantee that an already-running YouTube stream will survive unchanged.

Before choosing a router or backup connection, verify:
- Which backup modes the exact model, hardware revision, firmware, and regional version support—such as a second WAN, USB internet, or tethering.
- How it detects a failed primary link and what happens to existing sessions during handoff.
- The backup service’s recurring cost, data allowance, and availability where you live.
TP-Link’s TL-WR1502X guide describes Multi-WAN Backup with a primary connection and secondary backup mode, switching when the primary connection fails. TP-Link cautions that availability can vary by hardware revision, firmware, and region; verify the exact version before relying on that feature. Its general dual-WAN guidance describes moving new sessions to another line after detecting a dropped primary connection, which is not a promise that every existing session continues uninterrupted.
