To reduce battery drain and heat while gaming, lower screen brightness, turn down graphics or frame rate where the game allows it, and choose a battery-saving game mode if your phone offers one. Some warmth is normal during demanding games; stop playing if the phone becomes uncomfortably hot or shows a temperature warning, and let it cool in a cooler place.
Why gaming makes a phone warm and uses battery
Games can place heavy demands on a phone’s processor and graphics hardware, while the display and network connection also use power. Apple notes that graphics- or processor-intensive games can make an iPhone or iPad feel warmer. Samsung warns that its Game Booster Performance mode may increase heat because it consumes more battery. Warmth by itself does not necessarily mean the phone is damaged.

There is no single battery or temperature reduction figure that applies across games and phones. The available controls and their effects vary by manufacturer, model, software version, and game.
Settings that can reduce drain during a game
Lower brightness
Reduce screen brightness to a comfortable level. Apple identifies high brightness as an energy consumer; dimming the display can reduce power use without changing the game’s graphics settings. Apple’s battery-use guidance covers brightness and other ways to extend battery life.

Reduce graphics or frame rate
Check the game’s graphics or performance menu for options such as lower visual quality, frame rate, or effects. Not every game provides these controls. Lower settings can trade visual smoothness or detail for reduced performance demand; the size of any battery or temperature change is not established across games.
Choose a less demanding game mode when available
On supported Samsung phones, open Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster > Game optimisation and choose Standard or Battery saver instead of Performance. Samsung describes Standard as balancing performance and battery time, while Battery saver prioritizes power saving during gaming. Performance prioritizes high performance and may increase heat. Use Wi-Fi for online games when practical
For games that need an internet connection, Apple recommends Wi-Fi when available and a strong signal; its guidance says Wi-Fi uses less battery power than mobile networks. That is a battery-use recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular phone or game will run cooler. Apple’s guidance explains the network recommendation.
Play in a cooler environment
Keep the phone out of direct sunlight and avoid gaming in a hot car or other hot surroundings. Apple says iPhone and iPad are designed for use where ambient temperatures are 0–35°C (32–95°F). Separately, Apple’s battery-maintenance guidance gives 16–22°C (62–72°F) as an ideal ambient range for iPhone performance and advises avoiding use or charging above 35°C (95°F), which can permanently reduce battery lifespan. These are Apple-specific recommendations, not universal temperature limits for every phone brand.

Check whether an app or battery issue needs attention
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Battery to review battery usage by app and check battery health. High game usage can be expected during a long or demanding session; the screen can help identify whether an app is using an unusually large share outside the game as well. Apple advises considering battery service if Battery Health shows Service. Battery replacement is not a default fix for heat or gaming-related drain. See Apple’s battery guidance.

Apple notes that battery chemical age reflects several factors, including temperature history and charging pattern. A battery that is aging may warrant service based on its diagnostics, but heat during a demanding game alone does not establish that replacement is needed. Apple explains battery aging and maintenance.
What to do if the phone is too hot
- Stop playing if the phone is uncomfortably hot or displays a temperature warning.
- Move it away from heat and direct sunlight. For an iPhone or iPad warning, Apple says to turn the device off and move it to a cooler place, then allow it to cool.
- Resume only after it has cooled. If a Samsung device remains hot for a prolonged period, Samsung advises not using it for a while; if prolonged overheating continues, contact Samsung or an authorized service centre.
Do not put a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer. The manufacturer guidance is to move it to a cooler place and let it cool, rather than chill it abruptly. See Apple’s temperature-warning steps and the Galaxy Z Fold6 overheating guidance.
