How to Test an AI-Built App Before Launching It

A polished demo and passing tests are not enough. Verify real user workflows, challenge AI-generated code and tests, inspect security-sensitive changes, and add mobile or runtime-AI checks where relevant.

Test an AI-built app against its real requirements, likely failure cases, and security risks—not just the demo and the test suite generated alongside the code. A passing suite can still approve broken behavior, so combine independent user-flow checks with code and security review. If the app also uses AI at runtime, add tests for the specific ways its models, data sources, and tools could be misused.

What “ready to launch” should mean

Before testing, define the outcomes the app must deliver and the failures it must prevent. “The screen loads” is not enough if a user’s changes must also be saved, private data must stay private, or a payment must not be charged twice.

Write acceptance criteria for each critical workflow before asking an AI coding tool to generate or revise tests. For each workflow, identify what a user should see, what data or state should change, and what should happen when the task cannot be completed. Include invalid input, empty states, timeouts, service errors, and loss of connectivity where relevant.

Map the complete path from entry to completion for the features your app actually has: for example, account creation or login, the main task, saving and retrieving information, and payment or external-service integrations. Don’t add checks for features the app does not include.

Use several kinds of testing, not one green check

Different techniques expose different failure modes. Unit and integration tests are useful for behavior you can specify in advance; they do not establish that the requirements themselves are correct. Manual exploration can reveal confusing or unexpected user-visible behavior, while static analysis, secret detection, fuzzing, and web scanning examine different parts of the code and attack surface.

Approach What it can help find Human judgment and when to use it
Unit and integration tests Regressions in known rules and interactions between components or services. People must verify that the expected behavior is right and that tests exercise the important cases. Use for repeatable acceptance criteria.
Exploratory and black-box checks Broken or confusing user-visible flows, unexpected input handling, and failures not covered by scripted tests. Requires a person to choose realistic and adversarial actions and judge the result. Use in a production-like staging environment.
Static analysis and secret detection Potentially unsafe code patterns, configuration issues, and credentials exposed in source or related files. Review findings in context; a scanner does not decide whether the app’s design is safe. Apply to code and configuration.
Dependency and included-component review Risks or unexpected components introduced through packages, libraries, and services included in the app. Requires judgment about what the app actually uses and the implications of those components. Apply before release.
Fuzzing Crashes and other unexpected behavior triggered by malformed or unusual inputs. Useful where inputs can be varied systematically; investigate and reproduce findings rather than treating a run as proof of safety.
Web application scanning Potential weaknesses on exposed web application surfaces. Use when the app has an applicable web surface; automated findings still need review and remediation.
AI-specific abuse testing Failures at model, prompt, retrieval, or tool-use boundaries, such as prompt injection or attempts to expose sensitive data. Applies only if the product uses AI at runtime. Test the actual feature and the permissions and data it can reach.

NIST’s 2021 Recommendations for Federal Vulnerability Disclosure Guidelines (NISTIR 8397) describes 11 broadly applicable software verification techniques, including threat modeling, automated testing, static scanning, secret-detection heuristics, black-box and structural test cases, historical tests, fuzzing, web application scanners where applicable, and attention to included components. NIST says its report does not cover the totality of software verification; it recommends techniques that are broadly applicable and form minimum standards. The list is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that an app is correct or secure.

Test the app’s critical workflows and their failure paths

  1. Run each essential workflow from start to finish. Use a staging environment configured as closely as practical to production. Check the actual result—not only whether the interface displayed a success message. Confirm that records, permissions, or other relevant state changed as intended.
  2. Challenge the happy path. Try empty, malformed, and boundary-value inputs; repeat or perform actions concurrently where that is plausible; expire a session; and interrupt a request or connection. Confirm that the app handles each case without losing or corrupting important data.
  3. Check recovery and communication. When a service is unavailable or an operation fails, verify that the user gets an understandable next step and that retrying does not create duplicate or inconsistent effects.
  4. Compare behavior with the acceptance criteria. Record the observed outcome for each scenario. Treat these as independent acceptance checks, rather than letting the same coding agent define the expected behavior and provide the only tests of it.

Independently review AI-generated code and tests

AI-generated tests can be useful, but they can also encode the same mistaken assumption as the code they are meant to verify. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet puts the problem plainly: “100% passing means nothing if the tests assert broken behavior.” Review test expectations against product requirements, and add negative cases the coding agent did not supply.

  • Check whether important tests were removed, weakened, or changed to make a build pass.
  • Inspect assertions that only check a response exists or a screen renders when the requirement is about its contents, permissions, or effects on saved data.
  • Look for mocks that replace the behavior under test. A mock can isolate a component, but it cannot by itself establish that the real integration works.
  • Verify failure cases as well as successful ones, especially around account access, input handling, and changes to important state.

Review source code, secrets, dependencies, and the release pipeline

Give extra scrutiny to authentication, authorization, input validation, cryptography, secret handling, and anything that runs automatically in build or deployment. OWASP warns that AI coding agents may change files executed in trusted build and deployment contexts; a code review should therefore cover more than application source files.

  1. Run static analysis and secret-detection checks over the relevant code and configuration. Investigate findings rather than assuming a clean scan rules out defects.
  2. Review dependencies and included services so you know what the app packages, calls, or relies on.
  3. Inspect AI-authored automation changes in package scripts, CI workflows, container or build files, and deployment infrastructure. Confirm that the changes do not weaken checks or expose credentials.
  4. Check the coding assistant’s access and data handling. Keep credentials out of source files and understand what project context a cloud coding assistant can access or send.
  5. Use web scanning when there is an exposed web surface, and investigate results against the app’s actual configuration and behavior.

Add AI abuse tests if the app uses AI at runtime

An app built with AI assistance does not necessarily use AI in its released product. The checks in this section are for apps that send prompts to a model, retrieve documents for model responses, use model-connected tools, or let an AI system take actions.

Start with the feature’s trust boundaries: what user or external content can influence the model, what sensitive information it can access, and what tools or actions it can invoke. OWASP’s AI testing guidance identifies risks including prompt injection, indirect prompt injection, sensitive-data exposure, unsafe or biased outputs, hallucinations, and limits on agents. Select tests based on the feature rather than treating a generic list as exhaustive.

  • Prompt injection: Try instructions that attempt to override the intended task or rules. If the feature retrieves documents or other external content, include indirect instructions embedded in that content.
  • Data exposure: Attempt to elicit system instructions, another user’s information, or other sensitive material the feature should not reveal.
  • Output quality and safety: Test relevant harmful or disallowed requests, biased outcomes, and claims that the feature cannot support. Check that output controls and escalation paths work as intended.
  • Tools and agent limits: Try to make the system exceed its permitted actions, access, or operational limits. Verify permissions at the application boundary rather than relying only on a model instruction.

OWASP AISVS 1.0 (2026) contains 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices, with verification levels for AI-system controls. It is intended to complement—not replace—checks for ordinary application, infrastructure, and supply-chain security. Use its controls that fit the app’s design and risk; passing selected AI checks does not establish that the whole product is secure.

Apply mobile and app-store checks only when they fit

For native mobile apps

Browser testing alone does not exercise a native app’s platform-specific behavior. Check how the app stores sensitive data and keys, protects deep links, handles authentication, and configures network communication. OWASP’s mobile guidance covers secure key storage and protections for sensitive deep links, among other concerns.

For AI-content apps distributed on Google Play

Google Play’s AI-Generated Content policy says apps that generate content using AI must provide in-app reporting or flagging so users can report offensive content without leaving the app. Reports should inform filtering and moderation. This requirement is conditional: it is for relevant AI-content apps on Google Play, not every app built with AI. Google also recommends industry-aligned safety and security testing and points developers to SAIF and OWASP generative-AI red-teaming guidance. Check the live policy before publishing because store requirements can change.

Make the launch decision explicit

Keep a release record of the critical scenarios tested, their results, unresolved failures, and the person who accepted any remaining risk. Set a release gate appropriate to the product rather than assuming a universal pass score: NIST and OWASP describe verification methods and frameworks, not one mandatory threshold for every app.

As a practical editorial rule, block release when a failure could expose another user’s data, bypass access controls, leak credentials, corrupt important state, or produce unacceptable AI behavior. For other unresolved issues, document the likely impact, mitigation, and owner so the decision is deliberate rather than hidden by a passing build.
