The next defenseman on the NHL team’s depth chart does not automatically inherit the absent player’s role or value. Check who is expected to play, their defensive pairing and power-play assignment, and how their strengths match your league’s scoring before making a roster move.
What changes when a defenseman is out?
You lose the absent player’s contributions for each game he misses. Another defenseman may enter the lineup or move up the depth chart, but simply dressing does not mean he will receive the same minutes, pairing, or special-teams work. NHL.com’s fantasy glossary recommends looking for players who can take on similar usage and production; that player could be on the same NHL team or available on your fantasy waiver wire. Think of an absence as a possible role change, not a one-for-one transfer of fantasy points. A replacement’s value depends on what role he actually gets and how your league scores his contributions.
How to decide what to do

Confirm the player’s status
Check whether he is ruled out, day-to-day, or a game-time decision, and when the report was updated. Recheck close to puck drop: projected lineups are snapshots, not guarantees.

Check your league’s roster and injury rules
Before moving, benching, or dropping the player, confirm your platform’s injury-slot eligibility, transaction limits, and waiver rules. IR and IR+ requirements vary by platform and league settings. NHL.com’s glossary includes Yahoo-specific examples; do not assume they apply to your league.

Find out who gains the opportunity
Look for a defenseman entering the lineup, moving to a higher pair, or taking on power-play work. NHL.com’s projected lineup reports can show status and pairings, but assignments can change. In its October 3, 2026 report, Jacob Trouba was listed as a game-time decision because of illness, with Sam Dickinson projected to enter the lineup if Trouba could not play. That illustrates how to read a report; it does not establish Dickinson’s fantasy production or predict what will happen in another game. Check NHL.com’s projected lineups for current reports.

Match the replacement to your scoring
In a points league, use your league’s actual point values. In a category league, focus on the categories you need. NHL.com’s 2026-27 defenseman rankings consider goals, assists, power-play points, shots on goal, hits, and blocked shots, along with factors such as defensive pairing and power-play usage. Those categories are not universal: your league may count only some of them or weight them differently. See NHL.com fantasy coverage for its rankings and related resources.

Compare the teammate with waiver options
Consider the replacement’s expected role, whether he is available, and how many games he can contribute during your matchup window. A waiver option may be a better fit than the same-team replacement, but the right comparison depends on your league’s player pool and schedule.

Weigh the roster cost before making an irreversible move
If the return timing is unclear and the defenseman is valuable, check whether an eligible injury slot lets you preserve him without losing an active roster spot. If there is no such slot, weigh the games you expect him to miss against the best available replacement and your league’s transaction rules. The right choice depends on details such as the player’s status, your roster, and the available alternatives.
What to compare between replacement options

| Availability | Is the player projected to dress, scratched, injured, or still a game-time decision? |
| Role | What defensive pair is projected, and is he moving up the depth chart? |
| Special teams | Will he receive power-play work, or is that role staying with another player? |
| Category fit | Does he help in the categories your league counts, such as goals, assists, power-play points, shots, hits, or blocks? |
| Timing | How many games can he contribute during your matchup, and what return information is available for the absent player? |
| Roster cost | Would the move use waiver priority or a transaction, and would an injury slot open a roster spot? |
These checks help compare options without assuming a replacement will produce at the absent defenseman’s rate. The NHL.com lineup report and fantasy rankings can inform role and category checks, but they cannot tell you which players are available in your individual league or supply a return timeline for an unspecified player.
Use scoring rules from your league, not a generic points example
NHL.com lists one game-specific scoring example for NHL Fantasy Stars in 2026: 7 points for a goal, 4 for an assist, and 1 each for a shot on goal, a hit, and a blocked shot. Those values apply to that game format, not to fantasy hockey leagues generally, and they do not quantify the effect of a defenseman’s absence. Use your own league’s settings when estimating what a replacement is worth.

Where to check before puck drop
NHL.com’s October 2, 2026 cheat sheet links to fantasy resources including rankings, weekly waiver pickups, category targets, and projected lineups. Treat it as a way to find resources, not proof that a particular player is available or will produce. For a day-of decision, check the latest lineup report and your fantasy platform’s player eligibility and league settings.
