Check these details before entering the code
A few checks prevent the most common redemption errors. Have the console online, identify what kind of code you have, and confirm which Nintendo Account should receive it. Do these checks before scratching a card, typing the number, or changing any account settings.

Confirm the code type
A Nintendo code is not always a game download. Nintendo distinguishes several products, and each one produces a different result after redemption:
#1 Best Overall
- eCash - Nintendo eShop Gift Card $100
| Code type | What it provides | What you should expect after redemption |
|---|---|---|
| Download card for software | A specific digital game | The game becomes available to download and normally appears as a software icon on HOME. |
| Download card for downloadable content | DLC, an expansion, or another add-on for a specific game | The add-on is redeemed for the account; it may be managed through the game rather than appearing as a separate HOME icon. |
| Prepaid card or prepaid number | eShop account balance | Funds are added to the selected account. You still use the balance to buy a game or other eShop item. |
| Nintendo Switch Online membership card | A membership period | The membership benefit is applied to the Nintendo Account used for redemption. |
| Trial ticket | A limited trial entitlement | The trial is attached to the account and follows the ticket’s stated conditions. |
If your card says prepaid, it does not contain a particular game. It adds funds for a later purchase. That is why a prepaid redemption will not automatically place a game icon on HOME. If the code is for a third-party service rather than Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store, use the redemption instructions supplied by that service instead.
Identify the console generation
Switch software and DLC codes can be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop. A code for Switch 2 software, Switch 2 DLC, or a Switch 2 upgrade pack cannot be redeemed in the original Nintendo Switch eShop. Check the title and the console generation printed on the card before trying again.
| Content on the code | Switch 2 eShop | Original Switch eShop |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch software or DLC | Redeemable | Redeemable when the code is intended for the original Switch ecosystem |
| Nintendo Switch 2 software, DLC, or upgrade pack | Redeemable | Not redeemable |
This table describes eShop generation support, not whether a title has a separate physical or digital release. Follow the product description on the code for the exact edition. An upgrade pack is still Switch 2 content for compatibility purposes, even if it relates to a game you already own.

On a console with several users, eShop asks you to choose one. Nintendo assigns the redemption to the Nintendo Account linked to that user, and Nintendo says the content cannot later be transferred to another account. Decide who should own the game before entering any characters. Do not choose a temporary guest profile or another family member simply because that profile is currently open.
Codes can also be market-specific. Nintendo’s Japan support material states that domestic download and prepaid codes require the linked Nintendo Account’s country/region to be Japan. That is a Japan-specific rule in the cited documentation, not a universal statement about every market. Check the region printed on your card and the support information for the country where it was sold before redeeming it. Changing an account’s country setting blindly can create separate account or balance issues, so confirm the code’s market first.
Redeem a code directly on Nintendo Switch 2
- Connect the console to the internet. A code redemption and the subsequent download require an online connection. If the console is offline, connect it before opening eShop. A stable connection also gives eShop a chance to display the title and complete the entitlement transaction.
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the HOME Menu, select the Nintendo eShop icon. Wait for eShop to load completely rather than starting from an interrupted session.
- Choose the user who should own the content. Select the console user linked to the Nintendo Account that is meant to receive the game, DLC, membership, or funds. Read this prompt carefully: Nintendo binds the redemption to that account and does not provide a later transfer to another account.
- Open Enter Code. In eShop navigation, choose Enter Code, then select the entry field. The wording is Nintendo’s standard label for this route.
- Type the 16-character download code. Enter every letter and number exactly as printed. Nintendo does not use the letters O, I, or Z in these codes. If a character is hard to read, compare it with the printed code rather than substituting a similar-looking letter. Check that you have entered all 16 characters before submitting.
- Review and confirm. eShop displays the title or entitlement associated with a valid code. Check that it is the expected game, DLC, membership, or balance product, then continue through the confirmation screens to redeem it. This is your last practical opportunity to notice that the wrong product, user, or region is involved.
- Start or locate the download. For a game download, follow the on-screen download flow and look for the software icon on HOME. Select the icon when the download is ready to start the game. If the software is still downloading, let the process finish before treating a missing icon as an error.
The exact confirmation wording can vary by product and region, but the essential path on Switch 2 is eShop → Enter Code → enter the 16-character code → confirm.
What happens to the code after confirmation?
A successful redemption creates an entitlement for the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user. It is not a transferable token that remains available to other users on the console. Other profiles may be able to use software under Nintendo’s console-sharing features, but they do not become the account owner of the redemption. Keep the selected account in mind if the console is shared or if a child profile uses the device.
What you should see after redemption
A full game download
A software code grants the game to the selected Nintendo Account. Continue through eShop’s prompts and check HOME for the software icon. Nintendo notes that an apparently “already redeemed” message can mean the download has already begun, so allow the transaction and download process to finish before trying the code again. If the icon is not immediately visible, check HOME carefully and then check the virtual game card area for the account that performed the redemption.
DLC, an upgrade, or an in-game reward
Downloadable content does not always create a second HOME-screen icon. If the code represents items, bonuses, costumes, currency, or other content used inside a game, launch that game and follow its instructions for receiving the entitlement. The publisher’s in-game receipt process may be the place where the content appears. An expansion or upgrade that is represented as separate software may be listed in software or virtual game card information instead, so distinguish it from a consumable bonus.
Prepaid balance
A prepaid code increases the eShop balance of the account used at the code-entry step. It does not automatically select or download a particular game. After the balance is available, buy the desired title through the normal eShop purchase flow. The amount and any conditions are the ones printed on the prepaid card or shown by Nintendo for that market; no game entitlement is created until you complete a separate purchase.

Membership or trial entitlement
A Nintendo Switch Online membership card applies its membership period to the Nintendo Account used for redemption. A trial ticket supplies a limited trial entitlement under the ticket’s stated conditions. Neither should be expected to produce a normal game icon on HOME. If the benefit is not visible, look at the account’s relevant membership or game area rather than repeatedly entering the code.

Nintendo Japan documents code entry through Nintendo Store on a smartphone or computer when the Nintendo Account is linked to a Switch user. Treat this as a regional alternative rather than a guarantee that the same page or option is available in every country. Start with your local Nintendo support site to confirm availability and current interface labels.
The Japanese purchase guidance is available at Nintendo’s download-product purchase and Nintendo Store code-entry support page. If you use a browser-based route, sign in to the same Nintendo Account that is linked to the intended console user and verify the displayed product before confirming. A browser route does not remove the account-ownership rule: the Nintendo Account that completes the redemption receives the content.
Region, account, and generation compatibility
Three separate checks determine whether a code can work:
- Account ownership: the Nintendo Account linked to the user selected in eShop receives the entitlement. Another user on the same console does not become the owner simply because they later play the game.
- Country or region: the code and account must satisfy the market rules printed on the card and stated by Nintendo for that market. Japan’s support page specifically requires a Japan country/region setting for domestic Japanese download and prepaid codes.
- Console generation: Switch 2 accepts Switch software and DLC codes, while the original Switch eShop does not accept Switch 2 software, DLC, or upgrade-pack codes.
Checking all three before opening the code-entry screen is faster than trying random accounts or repeatedly retyping a code. Compatibility is not determined only by the console physically running the software; the eShop generation and account market must also accept the entitlement.

How to compare a game code, prepaid card, and membership card
Use the purpose of the code as the deciding factor:
| If you want to… | Use… | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Own one named digital game | A software download card or download code for that title | The specified game is granted to the selected account. |
| Add an expansion or bonus to a game | A DLC or game-specific content code | The add-on is granted; receipt may occur inside the game. |
| Choose the game later | A prepaid card or prepaid number | Balance is added, followed by a separate eShop purchase. |
| Extend online service | A Nintendo Switch Online membership card | The membership period is applied to the redeeming account. |
| Try a product temporarily | A trial ticket | A limited trial entitlement is attached to the account. |
Also compare the console generation and country/region before buying or accepting a code. A prepaid card is not a workaround for a region mismatch, and a Switch 2 upgrade code is not interchangeable with an original-Switch code.
Troubleshoot a Nintendo eShop code that will not work
“The code has already been redeemed”
Nintendo says this message can appear when the download has already started. First check HOME for the game’s icon and check the console’s virtual game card area. If the title is not there, review the other users on the console: the code may have been redeemed under a different Nintendo Account. Look for the title under each likely user instead of entering the same code repeatedly. Because ownership is account-bound, finding the account that performed the original redemption is essential.
“The code is invalid”
Re-enter the code slowly and compare each character with the printed version. Codes are 16-character alphanumeric strings and exclude O, I, and Z, but characters such as zero and the letter O or one and the letter I can still be visually confusing on packaging. Confirm that you have not omitted a character, added a space, or copied a nearby barcode instead of the download code. Also confirm that the code is intended for Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store. A code for another service follows that service’s redemption process and will not validate in eShop.
The title is not available yet
A valid code can be rejected temporarily when its game or DLC has not reached its release date. Check the title’s announced release date, then try the same code again after the software is released. Do not assume that a pre-release code is defective merely because the product is not yet available. The code can be valid while the entitlement is still unavailable for redemption.

The bonus or DLC is missing from HOME
Items and bonuses used inside a game may not produce a separate icon. Launch the associated game and use its stated receipt or claim instructions. Confirm that you launched the game on the same Nintendo Account that redeemed the code, then check the in-game mailbox, gift, or claim area named by the game. If the code was for a game expansion rather than an in-game item, check the title’s software and virtual game card information after eShop finishes processing.
The wrong user was selected
Check every console user and the virtual game card area to identify where the entitlement was redeemed. Nintendo does not allow a completed redemption to be moved to another Nintendo Account, so there is no second confirmation step that can undo the selection. If no user shows the title, return to the code’s status and other troubleshooting branches rather than entering it repeatedly. If the wrong account definitely received it, the practical fix is to use that account for the entitled software; a new code is required for a different account.
The code is for the wrong console generation
Compare the wording on the code with the software generation. A Switch 2 game, DLC item, or upgrade pack will not redeem in the original Switch eShop. Use a Switch 2 eShop session for that code. Conversely, Switch software and DLC codes are supported on Switch 2. If the product description is unclear, use the title’s Nintendo listing or the support page for the market printed on the card rather than guessing.
The region does not match
Look for the market or country printed on the card and compare it with the Nintendo Account country/region. For Japanese domestic codes, Nintendo Japan’s stated requirement is a Japan country/region setting. Other markets may apply their own restrictions, so consult the support page for the code’s market instead of changing account settings blindly. A region error is different from a mistyped character; correcting the code’s spelling will not resolve a market incompatibility.
The console is offline or the download is stalled
Redemption and downloading require an internet connection. Reconnect the console, reopen eShop if necessary, and check HOME for a download in progress before attempting another redemption. An “already redeemed” notice after a connection interruption can reflect a completed entitlement with an unfinished download, so inspect HOME and virtual game card information first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using prepaid funds when you do not have a game code
If your goal is simply to buy a game and you have a prepaid card rather than a download card, redeem the prepaid number first to add eShop funds, then purchase the game. Nintendo Japan’s guidance on prepaid-number purchase methods includes Amazon Japan as one source for Japanese prepaid numbers; that information does not establish availability or compatibility in other countries. Verify the card’s country/region before purchase or redemption.
A prepaid card therefore solves a different problem from a game download code: it supplies account balance, while a download code grants a specified title or add-on. Keeping those two paths separate helps explain why entering a prepaid number does not immediately place a game icon on HOME. Check the denomination and market shown by the seller, and remember that the balance belongs to the Nintendo Account selected during redemption.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I enter a Nintendo Switch 2 download code?
Open Nintendo eShop from HOME, choose the user whose linked Nintendo Account should own the content, select Enter Code, and enter the 16-character code.
Can I redeem a Switch 2 code on an original Nintendo Switch?
No. Switch 2 software, DLC, and upgrade-pack codes cannot be redeemed in the original Switch eShop. Switch software and DLC codes can be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop.

What happens if I choose the wrong user?
The redemption belongs to the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user, and Nintendo says it cannot later be transferred. Check every user and the virtual game card area to locate the entitlement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does my code say it was already redeemed?
The download may already have started. Check HOME and the virtual game card area, then review the other console users because another Nintendo Account may have redeemed it.
Why is my Nintendo eShop code invalid?
Re-enter all 16 characters carefully. Nintendo codes do not use O, I, or Z, but 0/O and 1/I can be confused. Also verify that the code is for Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store and matches your market.
Can I redeem a code before the game releases?
Nintendo says a title can be unavailable when its release date has not arrived. Check the announced release date and try again after release.
Why did my DLC code not create a HOME icon?
In-game items and bonuses may be claimed inside the associated game rather than installed as a separate icon. Launch the game and follow its receipt instructions.
Can I use a phone or computer to redeem the code?
Nintendo Japan documents Nintendo Store code entry on a smartphone or computer for a Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user. Availability and labels vary by region, so check your local Nintendo support site.
Is a prepaid card the same as a game download code?
No. A prepaid card adds eShop balance for a later purchase. A game download code grants a specified title; a membership card or trial ticket grants its own type of entitlement.
Do Nintendo codes work across countries?
Not necessarily. Nintendo Japan states that domestic Japanese download and prepaid codes require a Japan country/region setting. Check the market printed on your card and the rules for that market.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: On Switch 2, use Nintendo eShop → Enter Code, but first select the correct console user and verify the code type, console generation, and country/region. Enter the complete 16-character code, confirm the displayed product, and then check HOME, virtual game cards, or the associated game for the result. Already-redeemed, invalid, unreleased, wrong-generation, region-mismatched, and in-game-content cases each require a different fix—and a completed redemption cannot be moved to another Nintendo Account.
