Nintendo’s Basketball mode does not document Reese as a licensed player, and it provides no Reese-specific ratings, moves or abilities. You can, however, play Basketball with a Mii or other player avatar and make a player-created approximation inspired by her. That likeness is your customization, not an official inclusion or endorsement.
Basketball arrived in Nintendo Switch Sports with software Ver. 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024. The mode supports Two-on-Two games and three-point play, with Joy-Con motion controls for actions such as dribbling, shooting, blocking, stealing and dunking.

Is Angel Reese a playable character?
No. The Nintendo material describing Nintendo Switch Sports and its Basketball mode does not list Angel Reese as a selectable athlete, guest character or licensed likeness. It also does not assign her a special dunk, height advantage, shooting rating or defensive skill.

That distinction matters because a customized avatar can look basketball-inspired without becoming an official Reese character. Do not expect a Reese nameplate, her real-world statistics, a preset face or a dedicated commentary line. Any resemblance you create is made by the player inside the game.

What you need before starting
Basketball is part of Nintendo Switch Sports for Nintendo Switch. Install the game and update it to at least software Ver. 1.5.0, the update that added Basketball on July 9, 2024. If Basketball is missing, update the game before troubleshooting your controller.
- Nintendo Switch console: Basketball runs in the Nintendo Switch Sports game.
- Joy-Con controller: Nintendo describes motion controls for Basketball actions, so keep the Joy-Con charged and paired.
- Updated software: Ver. 1.5.0 or later is required for the Basketball addition.
- Internet connection: Needed for online features such as Play Globally; Nintendo Switch Online availability and account requirements may apply according to your setup.
- Additional controllers or accessories: Local multiplayer may require more equipment. Nintendo warns that accessories can vary by setup, so follow the game’s on-screen instructions rather than assuming one universal controller count.
Update the game and open Basketball
- From the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu, highlight Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Press the + or − button, open Software Update, and choose the option to update through the internet. If your console is offline, connect it before trying again.
- Wait for the update to finish, then launch Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Open the sports-selection screen and choose Basketball. If the sport still does not appear, close and reopen the game after the update completes.
- When prompted, attach or pair the Joy-Con and follow the motion-calibration instructions. Use the orientation requested on screen; the game’s prompts take priority over any generic controller advice.
The update history identifies Basketball as available in Play Globally, Play Locally and Play with Friends. The exact menu wording can vary slightly with later software revisions, but those are the documented ways to enter the mode.
Choose the Basketball format that fits your goal
Start by deciding whether you want team play, a shooting-focused contest or a particular multiplayer environment. Nintendo’s descriptions support the following distinctions:
| Option | What it involves | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Two-on-Two | Two teams alternate between offense and defense. Nintendo describes dribbling, shooting, blocking, stealing and dunking in this format. | Learning movement, passing decisions and defensive positioning with a teammate. |
| Three-point play | A long-distance shooting activity built around timing and accuracy. Nintendo describes both a timed contest and a local multiplayer contest. | Practicing release consistency or competing head-to-head nearby. |
| Play Globally | Online play against players outside your local room, subject to your account and network setup. | Matchmaking when no local opponent is available. |
| Play Locally | Play with people using the same local setup. | Same-room games and local three-point competition. |
| Play with Friends | Private or friend-based sessions using the game’s online features. | Organizing games with people you know rather than relying on open matchmaking. |
Choose Two-on-Two if you want the closest thing to a full basketball game. Choose three-point play if your priority is shot timing rather than dribbling and defense. The mode selection does not change your avatar into Angel Reese or grant a real athlete’s attributes.
How Basketball controls work
Nintendo presents Basketball as a motion-controlled sport. The official descriptions identify the actions but do not provide a complete written chart of button combinations or timing windows. Use the on-screen demonstration for the exact gesture and repeat the motion the game shows.

- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Dribbling and movement
Keep the Joy-Con oriented as instructed and make the motion shown during the tutorial. Begin slowly so you can distinguish a dribble input from a pass, shot or defensive action. In a match, avoid making large movements that could cause an unintended gesture or lose your controller’s tracking.
Shooting
When the game presents a shooting prompt, follow its demonstrated swing and release. Three-point play is useful for learning this sequence because it isolates long-range shooting from most defensive decisions. Focus on repeating the same motion rather than trying to imitate a real player’s physical shooting form.

Blocking and stealing
On defense, wait for the defensive prompt and perform the displayed motion. A block attempt is different from a steal attempt, so watch the action icon before moving the Joy-Con. If an input fails, reset your stance and try the exact motion shown instead of adding force.
Dunking
Nintendo’s Basketball description includes dunking as an available action. The game determines when a dunk opportunity is possible; use the prompt that appears rather than assuming a dunk can be triggered from any position.
Why exact button lists are not included here
The official pages describe motion actions at a high level, not as a complete written control manual. Publishing an exact button-and-timing chart without a documented Nintendo source would risk giving you incorrect instructions. The tutorial and live prompts are the authoritative guide for your software version.

Make a player-created avatar inspired by Angel Reese
Nintendo says players can use a Mii character, and its official site describes earning avatar items through online play. Those facts support general customization, but they do not establish a Reese preset or a guaranteed recipe for recreating her appearance.

- Select a Mii or the avatar type offered by your version of Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Adjust only the features the editor actually provides. You might use a hairstyle, skin tone, face shape, outfit color or accessory that reminds you of Reese, but treat each choice as your own approximation.
- Choose a basketball-appropriate outfit if one is available. Do not copy a professional team logo or imply that the outfit is an official Reese uniform unless the game explicitly licenses it.
- Save the avatar, return to Basketball and verify that the selected character appears in the pre-match screen.
- For additional cosmetic options, play eligible online modes and check the avatar-item rewards described by Nintendo. Availability can change with the game’s current item rotation.
How to describe the result accurately
Call it “a Reese-inspired Mii” or “a player-created Angel Reese-style avatar,” not “Angel Reese in the game.” If you share a screenshot or video, label it as custom. Avoid using the likeness to suggest that Reese, her team, Nintendo or a league endorsed the creation.
Play Two-on-Two with a post-player mindset
There is no Reese-specific attribute system, so the useful way to emulate a dominant post-player is through decisions rather than statistics. These suggestions apply to any avatar:
On offense
- Create spacing: Do not stand directly beside your teammate. Leave a clear lane so one player can attack while the other remains available.
- Protect the possession: Use controlled dribbles and avoid unnecessary gestures when a defender is close.
- Take the open shot: A clean, well-timed attempt is more reliable than forcing a contested motion.
- Look for the inside opportunity: When the game presents a dunk or close-range chance, use the displayed action rather than drifting back to a low-percentage attempt.
On defense
- Stay between the opponent and the basket: Move early so you are ready for the block prompt.
- Choose the correct action: A steal attempt and a block attempt are separate decisions. Watch the prompt before moving.
- Recover after a failed attempt: Reset your position immediately instead of repeating a motion that the game did not request.
- Communicate with your teammate: In local or friend play, agree on who guards the ball and who protects the basket.
Use three-point play as a mechanics drill
Three-point play removes much of the movement and defensive complexity. Use several rounds to learn the game’s release cue, then return to Two-on-Two and apply the same controlled motion while a defender is present. This builds familiarity with the software’s timing; it does not reproduce Reese’s real-world shooting profile.

Play Globally
Play Globally is the appropriate choice when you want opponents outside your home. A stable wireless connection reduces interruptions, but it cannot guarantee a particular skill level or opponent. Complete the game’s network and account prompts before entering the queue.

- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)

Play Locally
Play Locally is designed for people sharing the same room and console setup. Confirm how many players the selected activity supports and connect the controllers requested by the game. Nintendo’s accessory warning means you should not assume that every local configuration uses the same number of Joy-Con controllers.
Play with Friends
Use Play with Friends when you want a controlled session with invited players. Decide in advance whether you are practicing three-point shooting or playing Two-on-Two, then have every participant complete the connection prompts before the match begins.
Troubleshoot common problems
Basketball does not appear
- Confirm that Nintendo Switch Sports finished updating to Ver. 1.5.0 or a later release.
- Restart the game after the update completes.
- Check that you launched Nintendo Switch Sports rather than another title.
The avatar does not look as expected
- Return to the Mii or avatar editor and save the changes again.
- Check whether you edited the active profile or only previewed an alternative.
- Remember that the editor may not contain every hairstyle, uniform or facial detail you want; a close approximation is not an official Reese model.
Motion inputs are inconsistent
- Re-read the on-screen gesture and match the Joy-Con orientation shown.
- Clear space around your arms and keep the controller securely attached to its strap.
- Recalibrate or reconnect the Joy-Con if the game prompts you to do so.
- Practice the action in three-point play before returning to a crowded Two-on-Two possession.
Local multiplayer asks for more equipment
Follow the setup screen’s accessory instructions. Nintendo specifically cautions that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer, so the needed equipment depends on the number of players and the activity you selected.
Online play will not start
- Check the console’s internet connection.
- Verify that your Nintendo account and any required online service are configured.
- Try Play Locally to determine whether the problem is limited to online matchmaking.
Claims to avoid when sharing your custom character
A screenshot of a Mii can look convincing, but the image does not establish licensing or game support. Keep these boundaries in mind:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Do not say Nintendo added Angel Reese to the roster.
- Do not assign her real college or professional statistics to a Nintendo Switch Sports avatar.
- Do not invent a quote from Reese or Nintendo about the mode.
- Do not present a player-created uniform as an official team kit.
- Do not promise that another player will see exactly the same cosmetic items if item availability changes.
Nintendo’s own Basketball description uses the line “Get past your opponent’s defence in Two-on-Two and jump high towards the basket.” That is promotional game-page copy, not a statement about Reese or a named athlete.
What the game offers—and what it does not
| Question | Documented answer |
|---|---|
| Was Basketball added to Nintendo Switch Sports? | Yes. Nintendo’s update history records its addition in software Ver. 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024. |
| Can you play Two-on-Two? | Yes. Nintendo describes alternating offense and defense with dribbling, shooting, blocking, stealing and dunking. |
| Is there a three-point activity? | Yes. Nintendo describes a timed three-point contest and a local multiplayer contest. |
| Is Angel Reese an official character? | Not according to the Nintendo material documenting the mode. |
| Can you use a Mii? | Yes. Nintendo’s official site says players can use a Mii character. |
| Can online play provide avatar items? | Nintendo describes earning avatar items through online play; the exact available items can change. |
| Is one fixed controller setup guaranteed for every multiplayer session? | No. Nintendo warns that additional accessories may be required, so follow the in-game setup instructions. |
The practical answer is straightforward: update Nintendo Switch Sports, open Basketball, choose a documented mode and use a Mii or avatar you customize yourself. You can make that character resemble Angel Reese in a respectful, clearly unofficial way, but the game does not provide an official Reese player, Reese statistics or Reese-specific abilities.
