Yes—an Outlook email that has left Deleted Items may still be recoverable from Recoverable Items. Open Deleted Items and use the recovery command for your version of Outlook. Whether the message is still there depends on your account type, how long ago it was deleted, and, for work or school accounts, your organization’s retention policy.
First, check the folders and recovery area
- Search Deleted Items and Junk Email. The message may still be in a folder or may have been moved rather than deleted.
- Open the recovery command. In New Outlook or Outlook on the web, open Deleted Items and choose Recover items deleted from this folder (the exact control can vary by interface). In classic Outlook for Windows, select Deleted Items and choose Home > Recover Deleted Items From Server.
- Select the message and choose Restore. In New Outlook and the web, restored messages return to Deleted Items. Move the message to a regular folder so it is easier to find.
Use the steps for your Outlook version
New Outlook or Outlook on the web
Open Deleted Items, select Recover items deleted from this folder, choose the message, and select Restore. Check Deleted Items again after restoration, then move the email to Inbox or another folder.

Classic Outlook for Windows
Make sure Outlook is online and connected to the mail server. Select Deleted Items, then use Home > Recover Deleted Items From Server. Select the message and restore it. If that command is missing, Microsoft says this recovery feature is not supported through that client for the account.
How long can you recover a message?
Outlook.com
Microsoft’s published guidance says messages removed from Deleted Items in Outlook.com can be recovered for 30 days. Use a computer to attempt recovery; Microsoft says the action is not available in the Outlook mobile apps or a mobile browser. If an item has also been removed from Recoverable Items, Microsoft says it is permanently deleted and cannot be restored.

Work or school accounts
For Exchange or Microsoft 365 mailboxes managed by an organization, the administrator may configure how long deleted items remain recoverable. Microsoft illustrates one policy with 30 days in Deleted Items followed by up to another 14 days of recovery. That is an example, not a guaranteed period for every organization. Ask your administrator whether the mailbox’s retention or recovery policy still covers the message.

- Check whether a filter is hiding the message or an inbox or Sweep rule moved it to another folder.
- For a work or school mailbox, contact the administrator and ask about the actual retention and recovery policy, including whether recovery beyond the normal window is possible.
- For Outlook.com, if the email was purged from Recoverable Items, Microsoft documents it as permanently deleted. For other account types, the outcome depends on the applicable mailbox policy.
Microsoft’s recovery guidance says that if neither the user nor an administrator can find the item, it was probably permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. The guidance reviewed covers Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, Outlook.com, and New Outlook for Windows; organization-managed mailbox settings can vary.
