If online play on your PS5 lags or disconnects, first check PlayStation Network status, then test the connection in a few controlled steps: verify the Wi-Fi setup, improve the console’s signal path, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if you can. Advanced router changes are best left for a specific connection error—not treated as automatic ways to lower ping.
1. Check PlayStation Network and your connection setup
Before changing your home network, check the PlayStation Network status page. An outage or maintenance can affect online play even when your Wi-Fi is working normally.

On your PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Select the Wi-Fi network you intend to use and confirm that you have the correct network name (SSID), password, and security method. If the console cannot connect, correct those details before trying more advanced changes.

One compatibility issue is worth checking only if it applies to your router: PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not an IPv6-only network. If your router is configured for IPv6 only, it needs to use IPv4 as well.

2. Improve the Wi-Fi signal where the PS5 sits
Move the console closer to the router if practical, and clear objects that block or interfere with the path between them. If you use a cabinet or enclosed space, test the console in a more open position to see whether the connection becomes more stable.
Restarting network equipment is a useful basic check. Turn off the router and modem, leave them off for at least five minutes, then turn them back on and let them reconnect before testing the PS5 again.

Test both available Wi-Fi bands
The PS5 safety guide identifies 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Sony notes that 2.4 GHz is shared with various devices and that interference can reduce speed or range, or cause a connection to drop. That does not mean 5 GHz is always better: the result depends on the router, interference, distance, and obstacles in your home. If both bands are available, test each from the PS5’s usual location and keep the one that gives you the steadier connection.
3. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If a cable can reach safely, Ethernet is a practical way to find out whether the wireless link is contributing to the problem. It bypasses the local Wi-Fi connection, but it cannot guarantee a particular ping, speed, or improvement for every internet connection.

- Connect the PS5 to your router with an Ethernet cable. Sony’s safety guide lists compatibility with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T networks.
- On the console, go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
- Test the same game and type of online activity you used on Wi-Fi, then compare whether the lag or disconnects change.
If wired play is stable while Wi-Fi is not, focus next on the wireless signal path, band, or coverage. If the same issue persists over Ethernet, the Wi-Fi link is less likely to be the only cause; check service status and follow the game or PlayStation connection-error guidance relevant to your symptoms.
4. Use MLO only if you have a compatible PS5 Pro setup
Multi-Link Operation (MLO) is configurable on PS5 consoles in the CFI-7000 model group when the access point supports MLO. Sony’s setup guidance suggests that PS5 Pro users with connection issues compare connecting with MLO enabled and disabled. This is a model- and router-specific troubleshooting test, not a general setting for every PS5.

5. Reserve advanced router changes for diagnosed problems
Sony’s instructions for particular connection errors mention router firmware updates, port filtering, manual static-IP setup, and—in timeout guidance—a temporary DNS change. These are error-specific troubleshooting options, not routine gaming optimizations. Changing DNS, opening or filtering ports, or assigning a static IP does not automatically reduce lag.
If the basic checks do not help and you are considering one of these changes, follow the instructions for the exact error code and ask your ISP or network administrator for help if you are unfamiliar with router settings. Sony specifically directs users to their ISP or network administrator for help with firmware and port-filtering questions.

Which connection should you use?

Consider a Wi-Fi access point or mesh node only if testing points to a coverage or distance problem. A new router or mesh system is not necessary for every player; first establish whether the issue changes with placement, band, or a wired connection.
