How to Recover Deleted Files from the Downloads Folder

Check Recycle Bin or Trash first, then look for a backup or cloud copy. If you use Windows File Recovery, save recovered files to a separate drive.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To recover deleted files from Downloads, first stop saving or installing anything to the affected drive. Check Recycle Bin on Windows or Trash on Mac, then check any backup or cloud service that may hold a copy. If those options fail, recovery from local storage may still be possible, but it is not guaranteed—new data can overwrite deleted files.

How do I recover deleted files from my Downloads folder?

Start by confirming the file is missing, then try the least risky recovery option for your device: its deleted-items area, an existing backup, or the cloud service’s recovery area. Use file-recovery software only after those checks. The steps below cover Windows 10 and 11, macOS, and iCloud Drive; they do not cover Android or Linux.

Confirm the file is actually gone

  • Search Downloads by the file’s name, extension, or a word you remember from its name. Also check likely folders in case it was moved rather than deleted.
  • If you downloaded it in a browser, open the browser’s download list to find the original filename or source website. You may be able to download the file again, but the browser’s history or download list is not a copy of the deleted file.

Choose the recovery route

Recovery route What it can recover What must be true Key consideration
Recycle Bin or Trash A deleted item still held there The item has not been permanently removed or the bin emptied Usually the simplest option; restoring it may return it to its former location.
File History or Time Machine A prior copy of the file or folder A backup was configured and included the relevant location May let you restore an earlier version; choose a different location if you do not want to replace current files.
Cloud deleted-items recovery Eligible files deleted from a supported cloud service The item is within the service’s recovery window and was not permanently removed Recovery is handled in the cloud service, not by scanning the computer’s local drive.
Windows File Recovery Some files deleted from local Windows storage The file’s storage space has not been overwritten Requires a separate destination drive; success is uncertain.

Recover a deleted Downloads file on Windows

Restore it from Recycle Bin

  1. Open Recycle Bin from the desktop. If it is not visible, search for “Recycle Bin” from the Start menu.
  2. Find the deleted file. You can sort by name or deletion date, or search within the window.
  3. Right-click the file and choose Restore. Windows returns it to its original location, which is usually Downloads if that is where it was deleted.

Check File History or another backup

If File History or another backup was already set up, inspect a previous copy of the user’s Downloads folder. Microsoft says File History backs up libraries by default, and custom folders can be included in a library; Downloads is not necessarily protected in every setup. See Microsoft’s File History instructions and its overview of Windows backup and recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the backup tool you previously configured and navigate to the former Downloads location.
  2. Look through available versions for the missing file.
  3. Restore the file. If the tool offers a choice, use a different location when you want to avoid replacing the current folder or a file with the same name.

Try Windows File Recovery only if no backup has the file

When a file is deleted, Windows marks its storage space as available; later activity can overwrite the data. Microsoft advises minimizing computer use to improve the chances of recovery. Avoid downloading or installing recovery tools onto the affected drive, and do not save new files there if you can help it.

Windows File Recovery is a Microsoft Store command-line app for local storage, not cloud storage or network shares. Microsoft documents it for Windows 10 and 11. Its support page also notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s current guidance for applicable platform and support details.

  1. Use a separate drive as the recovery destination. This can be an external USB hard drive if you have only one internal drive; the drive provides a destination but does not itself recover data. Microsoft states: “The source and destination drives must be different.”
  2. Open Command Prompt and use the basic command form: winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]. For example, a Windows installation on C: could recover to E:; confirm that E: is a different physical drive or otherwise a separate destination as required by Microsoft’s guidance.
  3. Choose the mode based on the file system and circumstances. For NTFS, Microsoft lists /regular as the starting mode for recent deletions and /extensive for older deletions, formatting, or corruption. For FAT or exFAT, use Extensive.
  4. To target the Downloads folder, adapt Microsoft’s folder-filter syntax, replacing <username> with the Windows account name and E: with your separate destination drive: Winfr C: E: /regular /n \Users\<username>\Downloads\. This is an adapted example, not Microsoft’s verbatim example; change the mode if the file system or deletion circumstances call for it.
  5. Follow the command’s prompts and inspect the destination for recovered files. Recovery may fail if the deleted data has been overwritten, a risk Microsoft notes is especially relevant on SSDs.

Recover a deleted Downloads file on Mac

Check Trash

  1. Open Trash from the Dock.
  2. If the file is there, drag it out of Trash, or select it and choose File > Put Back.

Apple explains that items remain in Trash until it is emptied; items deleted from local Trash after it has been emptied are permanently deleted. See Apple’s instructions for deleting files and folders on Mac.

Restore from Time Machine if available

If Time Machine was configured before the deletion, inspect a backup for the missing file and restore it. Apple includes Time Machine among the places to check for missing iCloud Drive files; see Apple’s guidance for missing iCloud Drive files.

Recover a deleted file from iCloud Drive

If the Downloads folder or file was stored in iCloud Drive, deletion can sync across devices with iCloud Drive turned on. Apple says eligible files deleted from iCloud Drive or other apps can be recovered within 30 days, whether deleted on iCloud.com or another connected device, unless they were permanently removed. The window is not a guarantee that every deleted item will be recoverable.

What if the file is not in Trash, a backup, or Recently Deleted?

For a Windows local drive, Windows File Recovery may be worth trying if you can use a separate destination and keep use of the affected drive to a minimum. For Mac, an existing Time Machine backup is the supported option covered here. If the file was permanently removed and no backup or cloud recovery option contains it, there may be no recoverable copy. Overwritten storage cannot be reliably restored, and the cited guidance does not establish a recovery success rate. Avoid installing recovery software or saving recovered files to the same affected drive.
