To stop using Chrome’s built-in password manager on Android, choose a separate password manager in Android’s system Autofill settings. Bitwarden, 1Password, and Proton Pass each document support for this setup. Which one fits best depends on your Android version, browser, passkey needs, and how you plan to move your saved logins—not on a proven comparative reliability ranking.
How Android autofill differs from Chrome password storage
Chrome’s password manager and Android’s system autofill provider are separate configuration points. You can select a third-party manager as the Android provider, then configure Chrome or another browser separately if its integration requires it. Android still supplies the system setting for choosing the provider, so avoiding Chrome autofill does not mean avoiding every Google or Android setting.

The usage guide was made with Samsung One UI and notes that behavior may vary by Android version; Proton’s passkey instructions require Android 14 or newer. |
These provider guides establish setup steps and documented features, not which manager fills the most reliably across Android phones. No independent comparative success-rate testing is available here. If filling reliability is your deciding factor, test the manager on your own phone, browser, and most-used apps before moving every login.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Set up a third-party autofill provider
- Install and sign in: Install your chosen password-manager app from a trusted source, then sign in and make sure the logins you want to test are available in its vault.
- Open the manager’s autofill settings: In the app, find its Autofill setup or settings page and follow the link to Android’s service picker.
- Select the manager in Android: Choose it as the system autofill service. The exact labels differ by device; search Android Settings for “Autofill” or “Passwords” if you cannot find the picker.
- Check browser-specific steps: If you use Chrome or Brave, consult your manager’s current instructions. Bitwarden and 1Password both document additional browser configuration.
- Test in two places: Open a saved login in an installed app and then in your target browser. Confirm that the correct account appears and that you can fill it before relying on the setup.
Version limits and autofill behavior
Bitwarden: service and inline suggestions
Bitwarden documents its Autofill Service for Android 8 and newer. Its inline autofill option requires Android 11 or newer and a compatible input method editor (IME), such as a supported keyboard. If inline suggestions do not appear, check those requirements and try the popup method instead. Bitwarden’s guide also discusses accessibility as another autofill method, but users should install apps from trusted sources and be cautious about filling credentials into them.
1Password: browser steps and Private Space
1Password’s instructions call out additional steps for Chrome 141 or newer and Brave 1.83 or newer when you want to use a different autofill service. They also state that apps inside Android 15 Private Space cannot use the system autofill provider. If a login fills in your main profile but not in Private Space, that documented limitation may explain the difference.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Proton Pass: device menus can vary
Proton’s usage guide illustrates the flow on Samsung One UI and warns that behavior can vary by Android version. Treat its screenshots and menu path as an example rather than a promise that every manufacturer uses the same labels.
Passkeys are related to autofill, but are not the same thing
Passwords are usually filled into a login form; passkeys use a different sign-in mechanism. Google’s Android instructions say to select a passkey manager under Passwords, passkeys & accounts, and note that not all apps and websites support passkeys. Google’s Android passkey instructions

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- USB TYPE C Connectivity & DONGLE Design: Designed for PCs, Macs, laptops, iPhones, and Android devices that utilize a USB-C port. Plug and stay, or carry it on a keychain. (Item Size: 0.73 x 0.60 x 0.30 inches)
- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC functionality is not supported.
Proton’s Android passkey guidance requires Android 14 or newer and selecting Proton Pass as the default password and passkeys app. 1Password’s Android download information also specifies Android 14 or newer for passkeys. Bitwarden says its Android app can store and autofill passkeys, but notes a narrower platform limitation: Android does not allow third-party providers such as Bitwarden to support passkey-based two-factor authentication using non-discoverable credentials. That limitation concerns this type of passkey-based 2FA, not every passkey sign-in.

Choose an import path before you stop using your current password store. Proton says imports from other password managers and browsers are handled through its browser extension. Follow the importer’s instructions and verify that important accounts appear in the new vault before removing or disabling the old autofill source. Import steps differ by provider, so consult the destination manager’s current instructions rather than assuming that a phone app can import directly from every browser.

- PHISHING-RESISTANT 2FA: Cryptographically binds to real domains, making phishing attacks impossible unlike SMS codes or authenticator apps.
- 3-SIDE CAPACITIVE TOUCH: Tap the end, left, or right side to authenticate, so it works in any orientation or crowded USB port.
- MULTI-COLOR LED INDICATOR: Blue means ready, blinking blue means tap now, green means success, and red means error for instant status feedback.
- IP68 WATERPROOF & BATTERY-FREE: Crush-resistant one-piece construction survives daily carry on a keychain or in a bag for years without any batteries.
- UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Works with Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub, AWS, and any FIDO2 / U2F / WebAuthn service, storing up to 100 passkeys.
If autofill is unavailable while you troubleshoot, Proton’s guide describes opening Proton Pass and copying values manually. It says the clipboard is cleared after 60 seconds by default; that timing is specific to Proton’s documented behavior and should not be assumed for other managers.

Choose by the constraint that matters to you
- Pick based on Android and keyboard compatibility: If you want inline suggestions, check the Android and keyboard requirements for your selected manager; Bitwarden documents Android 11 or newer with a compatible IME for that option.
- Check browser setup before committing: Chrome and Brave may need additional configuration. Compare your browser’s version with the provider’s current guide, especially for 1Password’s listed version thresholds.
- Include passkeys in the decision: If you use passkeys, check the manager’s minimum Android version and whether the apps and sites you use support passkeys.
- Make migration part of the comparison: Confirm how the manager imports your existing data and test the result before retiring the old source.
- Judge filling on your own device: Vendor setup instructions do not establish a universal reliability winner. Try the manager with a representative app and browser on your phone.
