There is no documented one-click repair for a corrupted SingleFile archive. Preserve the original, work on a duplicate, identify the file’s actual format, then try the safest way to read or extract what remains. If bytes are missing or overwritten, the available SingleFile documentation does not establish a way to recreate them.
Start by protecting the archive
- Make an untouched backup of the file before opening it in an editor, converting it, or running archive tools.
- Make a second working copy and try recovery steps only on that copy.
- Record the file size and extension. A renamed file can have an extension that does not match its contents.
SingleFile documents several possible output forms, including HTML, its self-extracting ZIP format, MHTML, Safari Webarchive, and HTML accompanied by a resource folder. The correct recovery method depends on which one you have. See the SingleFile README for its documented output formats.

Identify the symptom before attempting a repair
The browser shows part of the page
Copy or save any visible text before experimenting. A partial display can be useful even if the document’s markup is malformed or incomplete. A text editor may also reveal readable text and HTML that you can preserve in a new file. This is a cautious extraction tactic, not a SingleFile-supported repair procedure, and it cannot restore missing embedded resources.

The file does not open from disk in Chrome
Do not assume that a browser access problem proves the archive is corrupt. SingleFile’s FAQ notes that Chrome’s local-file access permissions can affect the extension’s ability to interact with files on disk. Check the local-file access setting and try opening the duplicate again. The FAQ explains the limitation in its local-file access guidance.

The page opens but interactive features are missing
SingleFile removes scripts by default because scripts can change rendering and are not guaranteed to work offline. Missing menus, maps, or carousels may therefore be expected behavior rather than evidence of a damaged archive. The script-saving options affect a new capture; changing them will not repair an existing file. See the SingleFile FAQ.
Try recovery based on the file format
Regular HTML or HTML with a resource folder
Open a working copy in a plain-text editor and look for readable page text and markup. If you find content worth preserving, copy it into a new file and save that separately. If the document is truncated, the missing closing tags or embedded data may prevent a complete render; editing the markup can sometimes improve display, but it cannot recreate absent bytes or resources.

SingleFile self-extracting ZIP
SingleFile says its self-extracting ZIP files are essentially regular ZIP files, with extra data allowed before or after the ZIP payload. On a duplicate, try an archive utility’s test or extraction function. If extraction succeeds, save the extracted page and resources to a new location and inspect them separately. This is an attempt, not a guaranteed repair. The format is described in the SingleFile FAQ.
MHTML
If the file is MHTML, conversion is a format-specific route, not a general repair for damaged bytes. SingleFile’s FAQ points to the mhtml-to-html project for converting MHTML into a single HTML file. Work from a duplicate and keep the original MHTML unchanged.

Safari Webarchive
SingleFile lists Safari Webarchive among its output formats. Confirm that the file is actually a Webarchive before choosing a converter or extraction method; the cited SingleFile material does not document a universal Webarchive repair procedure.
If the extension is the problem, not the saved file
If new saves fail or SingleFile behaves unexpectedly, its README suggests a troubleshooting sequence for extension issues. These steps diagnose the extension or a conflict; they do not reconstruct already-lost archive data.

- Try saving in an incognito window.
- Reset SingleFile options.
- Restart the browser.
- Disable other extensions to check for a conflict.

If the working copy is truncated, unreadable, or missing embedded resources, look for another copy rather than repeatedly modifying the only original. Check the original website, browser downloads, backups, or a web archive if you know the page URL. These are alternative sources to investigate, not guaranteed recovery methods.
