How to Record Gameplay Walkthroughs for YouTube

Capture PC or console gameplay in OBS, verify game audio and commentary with a short test, then export and upload the walkthrough through YouTube Studio.

To record a gameplay walkthrough for YouTube, capture the game in OBS Studio, verify game and microphone audio, make and review a short test, then edit and upload the finished video through YouTube Studio. On a Windows PC, try OBS’s Game Capture source first; console players generally need a compatible capture device to send gameplay to the computer, though remote-play software may work where supported.

Choose how to capture the gameplay

The right capture method depends on where the game is running and how you want to get its picture and sound onto the recording computer.

PC gameplay

For Windows games using DirectX or OpenGL, OBS documents Game Capture as a direct capture method and recommends trying it first. On other operating systems, or if Game Capture does not work with a particular game, use the platform-appropriate display or window capture source documented by OBS. The available options and compatibility vary by operating system and game.

Console gameplay

To record console output on a computer, connect the console to a compatible game capture device and add that device in OBS as a Video Capture Source. Check the device’s compatibility with your console, computer, resolution, frame rate, and audio setup before buying: not every device supports every combination. A USB HDMI game capture card is a possible route for this setup, but it is not needed to capture PC gameplay.

  • 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

Where the console offers remote-play software for a computer, OBS can capture that software using Window Capture. This avoids the capture-device route, but the result depends on the network connection and remote-play support. A docked Nintendo Switch can use a compatible capture device; the Switch Lite cannot be docked, so it cannot use that hardware route.

Set up OBS and record a test

  1. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Follow its prompts to configure OBS for your computer and intended use. OBS offers recording-quality options and hardware encoders when available; there is no single best setting for every PC.
  2. Create a scene and add the game source. Add Game Capture for a supported Windows PC game, or the relevant display, window, or Video Capture Source for your capture path. Check the OBS preview before recording; it should show the intended game, not a launcher, empty window, or the wrong display.
  3. Set the recording destination and output options. Choose a folder with enough free space and select a recording-quality preset and encoder your computer can handle. Higher output demands can increase file size and performance load. If recording makes the game stutter, lower the output demands and test again.
  4. Check the Audio Mixer. Start the game and speak into the microphone. Confirm that the game or desktop audio and microphone meters move. If the wrong device is active, select the intended input manually in OBS’s audio settings. A separate microphone is optional; a working headset microphone can be enough.
  5. Record and review a short test. Play and speak for a few minutes, then watch the resulting file. Check that the picture is correct, game sound and commentary are both present, speech is understandable over the game, audio stays in sync, and the file saved to the expected location. OBS recommends testing before a full recording rather than beginning with a complete session.
  6. Adjust and repeat if needed. If the video stutters, lower recording demands and test again. If a meter does not move, correct the selected audio device or source before continuing. Confirm the test file itself, rather than relying only on the live preview.

Make the walkthrough easy to follow

Organize the recording around the game, episode, objective, or question the viewer came to solve. Keep explanations clear at important decisions, and make cuts or chapter changes easy to understand for someone following along. For gameplay footage, add original contribution where appropriate—such as commentary, instruction, or substantive editing—rather than assuming that footage alone will qualify for monetization.

YouTube’s reused-content policy considers whether a channel adds significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. It is applied at the channel level, and it is separate from copyright: having permission to use material and meeting monetization requirements are different questions. Review YouTube’s current policy before relying on a particular format for monetization.

1440p 16 Mbps 24 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended upload video bitrates, not required OBS recording bitrates. Recommendations can change, so check YouTube’s official upload encoding guidance when preparing your export. Match the exported frame rate to the recording rather than converting it without a reason.

Publish in YouTube Studio

  1. Open YouTube Studio and choose the upload option to select the exported video file.
  2. Complete the video details, including its title and description, and select the audience setting.
  3. Wait for processing and review the available checks. Resolve any issues that apply to your video.
  4. Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private. Use Private or Unlisted if you want to inspect the uploaded version before making it public.

Uploading transfers the file to YouTube; the visibility setting determines whether and how viewers can access it. You can upload first and publish after reviewing the processed video.

Common recording problems and fixes

  • OBS preview is blank or shows the wrong thing: Check the selected source and capture path. For a supported Windows game, try Game Capture; for console output, confirm the capture device is selected as a Video Capture Source; for remote play, capture the correct application window.
  • Game audio or microphone is missing: Watch the Audio Mixer meters while the game plays and while you speak. Select the intended input manually if its meter does not respond, then make another short test recording.
  • Commentary is hard to hear over the game: Adjust the relative game and microphone levels, then listen to a new test file. Do not assume the preview or meter alone confirms the final balance.
  • Audio and video do not stay in sync: Review the test file from beginning to end. Check the selected sources and settings, make a new short recording, and verify synchronization before recording a long session.
  • The recording stutters: Reduce output demands and test again. OBS settings depend on the computer and encoder available, so use the test file to confirm the change helped.
  • The file is missing or unexpectedly large: Confirm the configured recording destination and available storage before a full session. Change quality settings only after checking that the resulting test remains suitable to watch.
  • Console capture does not work: Recheck the console, capture-device, computer, resolution, frame-rate, and audio compatibility. If remote play is supported, capturing its computer window is an alternative, with quality dependent on network conditions.
