For the easiest guided workflow, try Loom; for free recording with more control over sources, scenes, and audio, choose OBS Studio. “Easy” depends on the video: a screen tutorial with a shareable link is different from a camera-led video or a recording that combines gameplay, a webcam, and several audio sources. OBS can do more, but its setup may take longer for a first-time user.
Choose by the video you want to make
| Your need | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Record your screen and webcam, then edit and share a link | Loom | Its product pages describe screen, camera, and microphone recording alongside editing and sharing features. |
| Record locally for free and control multiple sources or scenes | OBS Studio | It is free and open source, and can combine screen, webcam, capture-card, audio, and other sources. |
| Make a basic screen capture on a Mac | Built-in macOS screen recorder | Loom’s Mac page describes opening it with Command + Shift + 5; treat it as a basic starting point, not a full production setup. |
These choices are not identical kinds of tools. Loom emphasizes a guided recording, editing, and sharing workflow. OBS is a more configurable recording and live-streaming application; its broader controls can be useful when a simple capture is not enough.

What each option can record
Loom: guided screen-and-camera recording
Loom’s Mac and Windows product pages describe recording the screen, the camera, or both, and selecting a connected microphone. Its Mac page also describes system-audio capture, editing, clip stitching, captions or transcripts, and link sharing. This can suit creators who want to make a tutorial or presentation and share it without building a multi-source production setup.

Check the free plan before committing to a workflow: Loom’s Mac and Windows pages state that the free Starter plan is limited to 25 videos per member, and that recording more requires a Business plan. Plan limits and packaging can change, so confirm the current terms on Loom’s product pages.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
OBS Studio: flexible local recording
OBS Studio is free and open source, and the OBS Project describes it as software for recording and live streaming on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its features include real-time video and audio capture and mixing, scenes made from sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards, plus an audio mixer with filters.
That flexibility is useful when you want to arrange multiple inputs or adjust audio, but it brings more choices to learn. TechRadar’s review describes OBS as flexible while noting that the interface may overwhelm newcomers and reporting minor glitches in its own review. That is a review assessment, not a guarantee of how OBS will behave on your computer.

Mac built-in capture: a simple starting point
Loom’s Mac page says users can open macOS’s built-in screen recorder with Command + Shift + 5. This may be enough for a basic screen capture. Loom positions its app as an alternative when a creator wants camera capture, editing, or link sharing. Verify the current macOS behavior on your own device.

OBS Studio
- Install a compatible version. At the time the OBS download page was reviewed, it listed version 32.2.2, support for Windows 10/11, and macOS 13.0 or later. Those details can change; check the current OBS download and system-requirements pages before installing. OBS notes that a compatible operating system and hardware do not guarantee a successful recording: encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect the load.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS’s official quick start recommends starting with the wizard rather than guessing at output settings.
- Add the capture source you need. Choose a display or window for a screen tutorial, a game capture for gameplay, and a webcam or capture card if you need an external video input. You do not need a webcam, microphone, or capture card unless your recording calls for one.
- Check sound inputs. OBS defaults to capturing desktop audio and a microphone, but confirm the intended devices are selected and that the audio meters move when you speak or play sound.
- Review the frame and the sound. For a tutorial, make sure the selected display or window does not expose private information or notifications. For a camera-led recording, check framing and listen for clear audio.
- Make a short test recording. Record a few minutes, then play it back. Check that the correct screen, camera, and audio were captured and that the result plays smoothly before recording the full video.
Loom
- Select the recording layout. Choose screen-only, camera-only, or screen plus camera, according to Loom’s available options for your device.
- Choose the intended microphone. If using a connected microphone, select it deliberately rather than assuming the default input is correct.
- Check what will appear in the capture. Close private material and silence notifications if they could show during a screen recording; check camera framing if the camera is on.
- Record and review a short clip. Confirm the picture and audio before making a long take, then use Loom’s editing and sharing workflow if it fits your needs.
Which one should a beginner choose?
- Choose Loom if you value a guided screen-and-camera recording with editing and link sharing more than fine-grained production controls. Keep the 25-video-per-member Starter limit in mind and verify Loom’s current plan details.
- Choose OBS if you want free local recording, need to combine sources, or expect to adjust scenes and audio. Allow time to learn the interface and test your settings on your own hardware.
- Try the Mac built-in recorder if a basic screen capture is all you need and you are using a Mac; move to a dedicated app if you need a more involved camera, editing, or sharing workflow.
Optional gear depends on the input you need. A USB microphone can provide an external audio input; a webcam or capture card can supply video. OBS supports these source types, and Loom’s product pages describe selecting a connected microphone. None is a prerequisite for recording a basic screen tutorial.

Or let it run in the cloud
Recording software makes a video file; it is not the same as keeping a YouTube live stream running. If your separate goal is to loop an uploaded recording as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that task: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
