YouTube automatically archives eligible live streams; you usually do not need to enable a separate archive setting. After the broadcast, find the recording in YouTube Studio under Content > Live. The key exception: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a separate local recording for long broadcasts.
How YouTube saves a live stream
YouTube says eligible live streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, and the archive is uploaded by default. This applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. For a typical eligible broadcast, there is no separate archive switch to turn on.

YouTube Help recommends recording a local archive as a backup. That matters particularly for streams exceeding 12 hours: YouTube warns that they may not be captured. The platform’s guidance does not guarantee an archive for every eligible stream, so a local copy is the safer choice when the recording matters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind and manage the recording in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and sign in to the channel that hosted the stream.
- In the left-hand menu, select Content, then open the Live tab.
- Select the stream to review its archive and visibility. You can change the archive’s visibility or delete it from there.
For mobile streams, YouTube also says archives can be managed from My videos. The exact interface may change; the steps above reflect YouTube Help’s guidance available on October 3, 2026.

Keep a local backup, especially for long streams
A local recording gives you a copy independent of YouTube’s archive. YouTube recommends making one as a backup. If you stream through an encoder, use recording-capable streaming software; YouTube lists Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) among its options. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not prescribe universal OBS menu steps, so recording controls depend on the software and setup you use.
Before a long broadcast, check that your chosen recording workflow captures the program you intend to keep, has enough disk space for the full duration and quality, and leaves the resulting file easy to retrieve. An external drive is one possible destination, not a requirement. Storage needs depend on resolution, bitrate, duration, and how long you plan to retain the recording.

DVR is not the archive setting
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live. YouTube says turning DVR off does not prevent the full recording from appearing after the stream. If you want a post-stream archive, look for it under Content > Live; changing DVR is not a substitute for keeping a local backup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
