For a straightforward lesson from a desk, use YouTube’s Webcam option in Live Control Room: verify the channel, set the stream’s privacy and audience correctly, select a camera and microphone, preview, then go live. You can use a laptop’s built-in webcam; the key preparation is checking channel eligibility, network capacity, student privacy, and what happens to the recording afterward.
Before class: check eligibility and school requirements
YouTube’s current Help guidance says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person streaming must be at least 16. YouTube offers mobile, webcam, encoder, and console routes; for a typical stationary lesson, the computer webcam workflow is often the simplest. Choose a streaming method

Set up a computer webcam stream
- Enable live streaming and confirm eligibility. Follow YouTube’s channel prompts if live streaming is not yet available. Allow for any activation process shown in your account before the day of class.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose the webcam streaming option, then enter the lesson title and description.
- Set privacy intentionally. Choose public if anyone should be able to find and watch the lesson, unlisted if access should be limited to people with the link, or private for a restricted audience managed through YouTube. These choices control who can watch; they do not replace school approval or other privacy safeguards.
- Set the audience designation accurately. YouTube requires creators to designate whether content is Made for Kids where applicable. The fact that a lesson is educational does not by itself decide the designation. YouTube says this setting can affect live chat, comments, notifications, and personalized advertising. Review YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
- Select the camera and microphone. Check the preview for framing, lighting, and sound. If built-in audio is unclear, an external USB microphone is an optional upgrade; an external webcam is likewise optional if the built-in camera does not meet your needs.
- Preview, then start the stream. Confirm that the image and sound are working and that the intended privacy and audience settings are in place before you go live. YouTube’s step-by-step flow is documented in Create a live stream via webcam.
Protect students and plan the recording
Use the narrowest audience access that meets the teaching need, and inspect the camera view for student names, records, screens, or other private information. If students will appear, speak, or share work, consult school administration before the stream and follow local requirements.

Decide in advance whether to keep the recording. YouTube says webcam streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; you can manage the archive’s privacy or delete it afterward. Check the stream and archive settings in YouTube’s webcam-stream instructions before class.
Check the connection, camera, and sound
YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom. Other people or devices using the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Run a test before class, confirm the stream is accessible as intended, and monitor audio and video while teaching. Its streaming tips cover network preparation, testing, equipment, and safety.

- Check that your voice is clear at the distance you will teach from; keep the microphone away from distracting noise where possible.
- Frame the board, presenter, or demonstration materials so viewers can see what matters.
- Close or hide unrelated windows and notifications, and remove private information from view.
- Confirm that someone using the intended audience access can reach the stream, without accidentally making a restricted lesson public.
Fix common problems before students arrive
