Put those details beside the workflow while you work, so a future reader can trace what went in, what ran, and what came out. A complete record makes a workflow understandable and rerunnable; it cannot guarantee bit-for-bit identical results.
What a useful 30-day record must answer
A month later, the person rerunning the work may not be the person who created it. The record should let them identify the run, recover its inputs and setup, execute it, and judge whether the result is plausible. Keep the record with the project and connect it to immutable or versioned references wherever possible.

- Purpose and ownership: what the workflow is intended to produce, who ran it, and the run date or identifier.
- Code: repository and commit or release identifier, plus a short note on meaningful changes since an earlier run.
- Inputs: data source and exact version or release date, storage reference, access or license limits, and checksums where useful. Distinguish original data from derived data.
- Transformations: ordered preprocessing, quality-control, feature-generation, and filtering steps, including consequential manual decisions.
- Environment: operating system or container reference, dependency and framework versions, hardware requirements, and whether GPU support is needed.
- Configuration: model and analysis settings, preprocessing options, parameters such as learning rate or batch size where relevant, random seed, data splits, resource needs, and output paths.
- Execution: exact command or job script, expected working directory, non-secret environment variables, required services or access, and run or cluster identifier where applicable.
- Outputs: expected files or artifacts, storage locations, logs, evaluation results, and how each output relates to its inputs.
- Limits and rerun check: nondeterministic steps, unavailable data or services, known failure modes, expected variation, clean-environment instructions, and what to compare after execution.
Capture code, data, and environment precisely
Identify the exact code revision
Record the commit hash or release tag used for the run, not merely the repository name or current branch. Keep code, configuration, environment specifications, and documentation in version control. Use meaningful commit messages and tags to make changes and their rationale easier to find. The University of Tübingen’s ML Cloud User Guide on reproducibility recommends recording these project details.
Version the inputs and explain transformations
“The latest dataset” is not a reproducible input. Name the source and its exact release or version, state where it can be retrieved, and note access or licensing restrictions that could prevent a future rerun. Keep source data separate from derived data, and document the ordered steps that turn one into the other. Where practical, include checksums or other identifiers that help verify the retrieved files. The Google Cloud MLOps guidance emphasizes tracking datasets and artifacts through a workflow.

Preserve the software and hardware context
List dependency and framework versions and preserve the environment definition or container reference used for the run. Include the container image version or date if applicable, and record hardware requirements such as GPU support. An environment file helps specify software, but it does not preserve access to data, services, or hardware; record those dependencies separately.
Separate settings from the analysis and save the run
Keep run-specific settings together
Where practical, store parameters in a configuration file rather than embedding them throughout the main analysis code. Record model settings, preprocessing choices, learning rate, batch size, seed, data split, resource requirements, and output paths when they apply. This makes it easier to distinguish a changed experiment from a changed implementation.

Save how the workflow was launched
Include the exact command or job script and the working directory from which it should run. Note required environment variables without recording their secret values, as well as external services or approved access steps. Save logs and a run identifier or job context with the relevant code and configuration. Avoid overwriting earlier outputs; assign each execution a distinct location or identifier so results can be traced to their inputs and settings.

For an individual or small project, a version-controlled repository with a clear README, configuration, environment file, run script, logs, and versioned data references may be enough. For many experiments or multi-step pipelines, use a structured run history that records parameters and input/output artifacts. Google’s ML Metadata documentation describes recording executions and artifacts in relationships that allow readers to trace how an artifact was produced.

Choose an approach by asking whether it captures the needed information, how much is automatic versus manual, whether results trace back to exact runs and inputs, whether rerun instructions are preserved, whether future readers can still access the data and logs, and whether the volume of runs warrants searchable metadata. Do not put passwords, tokens, or other credentials in version control; document how to obtain access through the team’s approved secret-management process.
Check the rerun without promising identical output
Seeds can improve repeatability, but they do not eliminate all sources of variation. Google identifies data shuffling, variable initialization, asynchronous parallelism, and small evaluation sets as possible sources of noisy results. Its Rules of Machine Learning recommends deterministic random seeding, fixed initialization order, averaging several runs, and version control while cautioning that nondeterminism can remain. The University of Tübingen guide puts the limitation plainly: “A fixed seed improves repeatability but may not guarantee identical results across different hardware or software versions.”

For a useful rerun check, record the seed and data split, whether deterministic execution was enabled, and which outputs or evaluation measures should be compared. If the workflow is variable, repeat runs where appropriate and report observed variability rather than treating a single result as universal. The goal is to establish what was run and whether a later result is consistent with the expected behavior—not to claim exact replication when the system does not support it.
