Not every soundbar connects to every TV, but many pairs can work if they share a compatible connection. Check both devices for HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, analog, or supported Bluetooth audio before choosing a cable or setup method. Port availability and instructions vary by model and sometimes by region.
How to check whether your TV and soundbar are compatible
- Find the model numbers. Use them to open the TV and soundbar manuals or manufacturer support pages; connection features can differ even within one brand.
- Inspect the TV’s ports. Look for an HDMI port marked ARC or eARC, an optical audio output, or an analog audio output.
- Inspect the soundbar’s ports. Look for the matching input: TV ARC/eARC, optical, or analog. A port on only one device is not enough.
- Check wireless audio support. Confirm that both devices support Bluetooth audio and follow their model-specific pairing instructions. Bluetooth availability alone does not guarantee that a TV supports sending sound to a soundbar.
- Choose a connection shared by both devices and follow their manuals for audio-output and input settings.
Sony’s guidance is that the connection method depends on the ports available on the TV and soundbar: Sony: How do I connect a Sound Bar to my television? Sony also notes that available terminals can depend on the model, region, or country.

Which connection should you use?

How to set up HDMI ARC or eARC
- Connect the TV’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC/ARC to the soundbar’s TV ARC/eARC port.
- On the TV, choose the audio-system, HDMI ARC, or similarly named audio output. On the soundbar, select the corresponding TV ARC/eARC input or function.
- If using eARC, check both manuals for the eARC setting. Sony’s guide instructs users to enable eARC mode on the TV and the eARC feature on the audio system.
- Test TV audio and consult the manuals if sound does not come through; menu names and available settings vary by model.
For examples of manufacturer-specific steps, see the Sony Help Guide for connecting an audio system, LG’s ARC connection instructions, and Samsung Canada’s soundbar setup guide. LG notes that menu names and setting methods differ among TV manufacturers, so use the instructions for your particular devices rather than assuming another model’s menus will match.

What if the TV and soundbar do not share a connection?
If there is no matching port or supported Bluetooth audio function, the connection is not established by the information available for those devices. Check both manuals or contact the manufacturers with the exact model numbers to confirm whether another supported input or audio-output setting exists. A cable cannot add a missing port or feature.
When the TV has no ARC/eARC HDMI connection, check whether both devices have matching optical ports; if not, verify analog jacks or supported Bluetooth audio. Do not buy a cable until you have confirmed the port types at both ends.
