How to Think About the Modern Web as a Publisher

Publishing today means making content understandable to both people and discovery systems, while keeping the reader’s needs at the center.

The modern web is not just a collection of pages read by people. Search engines, social platforms, recommendation systems and AI applications also encounter and interpret online content. The practical challenge is to make a page clear in all those settings without letting discoverability displace the reader’s reason for visiting.

What changed about publishing on the web?

The web has grown into an environment where content can be encountered through many routes and interpreted by different systems. A reader might arrive directly at an article, follow a social link, discover it through search or see it surfaced by a recommendation. The same page may also be processed by automated systems.

The MXI.Studio article “How I think around the modern WEB” captures this shift with the line, “It was not that the Internet got worse; it grew.” Its point is not that publishers should chase every platform, but that they now publish into a broader context than a single human-to-page visit.

How can a page make its subject clear?

Use structure to show what a page is about and how its ideas fit together. A clear title sets expectations; descriptive headings name the questions or subtopics; grouping related points helps readers follow the argument. These choices also make the page easier for non-human systems to interpret, though they do not guarantee that any system will rank, recommend or cite it.

  • Choose a specific title: Tell readers what the page covers rather than relying on cleverness alone.
  • Use descriptive headings: Label sections according to their actual contents so someone arriving midway can orient themselves.
  • Group related ideas: Keep information that belongs together in the same section instead of scattering it across the page.
  • Connect relevant concepts: Link related material when it helps readers understand a term or continue exploring a subject.

Why should a page work for someone who arrives halfway through?

People do not always enter a page at the beginning. A search result, social post or shared link may take them to a particular section. Headings and coherent section structure help them identify where they are and whether the page addresses their need. Each section should make sense in its own context while still contributing to the whole.

That does not mean every paragraph must repeat the main point. It means the page should offer enough context, labels and organization for a reader to navigate without having to reconstruct the article’s purpose from scattered fragments.

How do authorship, sources and related pages fit in?

Make authorship and sourcing visible so readers can judge who is responsible for a page and what supports its claims. When a topic belongs to a wider body of material, connect the article to relevant pages. Those links can help readers move between related ideas and make the subject’s broader context easier to understand.

Links are useful when they serve that navigation or explanation. Adding links merely to make a page appear more optimized misses the point: the connection should have a reason for the reader.

How should discoverability affect editorial decisions?

Treat discoverability as a way to help the right reader find and understand useful material, not as the material’s purpose. The MXI.Studio article cautions against letting titles, introductions, word counts or links become metric-driven at the expense of the reader. Its recommendations are editorial guidance, not performance measurements, and provide no evidence that a particular format guarantees visibility.

A practical test is to ask whether a choice improves comprehension or navigation for a person who needs the information. If a heading, link or structural decision does neither, its value is doubtful even if it seems aimed at a platform or metric.
