Reconnect each device using its manufacturer’s app and the device-specific network-change instructions. If you replaced only the router, some devices may reconnect when the new router uses the same Wi-Fi name (SSID), password, and security settings as before—but that is not guaranteed for every brand. Check the device’s power, credentials, Wi-Fi band support, and signal before considering a reset; reset and set it up again only when the maker’s instructions call for it or the normal reconnect path fails.
First, identify what changed
A smart device may still be trying to join the network credentials it saved during setup. The right fix depends on whether you changed the Wi-Fi name, password, router, internet provider, or wireless security settings.

- Only the router changed: If possible, configure the replacement router with the previous SSID, password, and security or encryption type. TP-Link says Tapo and Kasa devices may reconnect automatically when all three match; this is not a guarantee for other brands.
- The SSID, password, or security settings changed: Use the device maker’s app to change the network or follow its setup instructions for joining a new one.
- The router or mesh network itself is offline: Restore the home network before troubleshooting individual devices.
TP-Link’s guidance says, “Currently, Tapo/Kasa app does not support switching Wi-Fi networks directly.” For those products, when the old wireless settings cannot be reused, follow the reset and reconfiguration instructions for the exact model: TP-Link: Devices Appear Offline After Changing or Resetting the Router.

Restore the network and check device power
Confirm the router has internet access, the device is powered or charged, and your phone is connected to the intended home network. Check that you are entering the correct network name and password; a similar-looking SSID or an old saved password can send setup in the wrong direction.

If the Wi-Fi or mesh network itself is malfunctioning, Google recommends checking cables and restarting the modem first, then the primary router or point, and then any additional points. This sequence is for network infrastructure trouble, not a required restart routine for every disconnected device. Google also notes that a working voice response is evidence that a speaker or display is connected to Wi-Fi: Google: Connect your Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network and Google: Troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection issues with your Nest or Home device.
Reconnect in the maker’s app
There is no universal smart-home setting for changing Wi-Fi. Open the app for the affected device, select that device, and follow its current instructions. The menu names and process can vary by model.

Google Nest and Home devices
Use the Google Home app. Google’s instructions vary by device type: some devices may require forgetting the old network and adding the device again, while thermostats and other categories have their own steps. Follow the instructions for your specific product rather than assuming one procedure works for all Nest and Home devices: Google: Connect your Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network.
Ring devices
- Open the Ring app and select the device.
- Open Device Health.
- Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network, then follow the prompts.

TP-Link Tapo and Kasa devices
TP-Link says the Tapo and Kasa apps do not support switching Wi-Fi networks directly. If you cannot reuse the previous wireless settings, use the reset and reconfiguration instructions for your exact model instead of searching for an in-app network switch: TP-Link: Devices Appear Offline After Changing or Resetting the Router.
Philips Hue lights
First determine how the lights are connected. A Hue Bridge connects to the router; Hue bulbs should not automatically be treated as ordinary Wi-Fi bulbs that each join the router directly. Some supported Hue lights also offer a direct Matter setup path, which is a separate pairing choice from using a Bridge. Follow the instructions for your actual setup: Philips Hue bulb guidance and Philips Hue Matter setup guide.

Troubleshoot the device before resetting it
If the app’s reconnect process fails, work through the likely connection causes one at a time:

- Power: Confirm the device is plugged in, switched on, or has a charged battery.
- Signal: Move the device closer to the router or mesh point and try again. If it connects nearby, coverage at its usual location may be the issue.
- Wi-Fi band: Check the device’s model-specific band requirements. Ring suggests trying 2.4 GHz rather than 5 GHz in relevant cases, but that is not a universal requirement for smart-home devices.
- Mesh coverage: Make sure the device is within range of a mesh point. If the mesh itself is having trouble, use the network-recovery steps rather than repeatedly changing device settings.
Ring’s troubleshooting guidance covers power, proximity, and band checks for its devices: Ring: device not connected to Wi-Fi network. Compatibility and available bands depend on the specific device.
Reset only when the device’s instructions call for it
A factory reset is a fallback, not the default response to a new router. Use it if the manufacturer’s app cannot change the network, its reconnect steps fail, or the instructions for your model specifically require a reset. Then set the device up again with the new network credentials.
Before removing a device from an app or resetting it, check what may be lost. Google warns that removing a Nest camera from the app may erase video history; save any clips you need before proceeding. Google’s reconnect guidance also notes that some devices may need to be factory-reset and set up again: Google: Connect your Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network. Ring likewise lists reset as a last resort: Ring: device not connected to Wi-Fi network.
