No—not as a supported Android Auto setup. Android Auto projects a compatible phone’s experience onto a compatible car or stereo display; Google does not document using one phone as the Android Auto receiver for another. You can still repurpose a spare phone as a standalone navigation screen, but that is different from Android Auto.
Why a second phone cannot serve as the Android Auto screen
Android Auto is designed to connect a compatible Android phone to a compatible vehicle infotainment system or stereo. Google describes it as a phone-based experience projected onto compatible car screens, not as software that turns a phone into a receiver display. The documented setup and compatibility requirements are in Google’s Android Auto compatibility guide and its Android for Cars overview.

So, installing Android Auto on an old phone does not make it a supported screen for a second phone. Google’s guidance does not establish a phone-to-phone receiver mode. Nor does it verify a current third-party emulator as a reliable way to add one. Treat claims that an app can do this cautiously unless its current documentation confirms the required Android versions, connection method, and compatibility.

What you can do with the spare phone instead
Use it as a standalone navigation display
You can mount the old phone and use its own navigation app and other supported phone apps. This does not project Android Auto from your main phone; the spare phone is simply running apps itself. A car mount is optional for positioning it, but a mount does not add Android Auto receiver functionality.

Use Android Auto on a compatible car or stereo
If your vehicle or stereo supports Android Auto, connect your compatible phone directly to it. A USB port by itself is not proof of support: Google notes that not all cars with USB ports work with Android Auto. Check the exact vehicle or stereo model in Google’s compatibility guidance before buying accessories or troubleshooting a connection.
Requirements for a supported Android Auto connection

How to check and set up Android Auto in your car
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the exact car or stereo model supports Android Auto; do not infer support from the presence of a USB port.
- Check the phone and connection. For wired use, verify Android 9.0 or later, an active data plan, and a suitable cable. For wireless use, verify phone and vehicle support, 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability, and the applicable Android version requirements.
- Park before setup. Google instructs drivers to leave the car in Park (P) with the infotainment system on before starting setup. Its Android Auto setup instructions say: “Make sure your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.”
- Connect the phone to the car or stereo. Use the vehicle’s supported wired or wireless setup. For first-time wireless setup, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth, keeping Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on as instructed by Google.
- Resolve connection problems at the supported connection. If Android Auto does not start, recheck the vehicle’s compatibility and the phone, cable, and wireless requirements rather than trying to make a spare phone act as the display.

Your spare phone can run navigation on its own, or you can consider adding a compatible car stereo or receiver that supports Android Auto. The receiver is a separate in-car display solution; it does not repurpose the old phone as an Android Auto screen. Check compatibility with your vehicle and installation requirements before choosing hardware.
