Before filing a U.S. federal return, reconcile your crypto records across every exchange, hosted account, and self-custody wallet you used—not just the platform where you sold or traded. Match each transaction to original records, trace transfers between your own accounts, confirm apparent duplicates against source data, and rebuild acquisition cost and proceeds where needed. A partial history can leave the basis of assets you later disposed of unsupported.
What a reconciled crypto record should show
The IRS requires records sufficient to establish the positions on your federal income tax return. For each relevant acquisition, keep the asset, units, acquisition date and time, U.S.-dollar cost or fair market value, and supporting transaction record. For each disposition, keep the date and time, units disposed of, fair market value, and money or property received. IRS guidance describes basis generally as cost in U.S. dollars and discusses records for identifying specific units: IRS guidance on virtual-currency transactions.

Preserve source exports and statements as downloaded, including the download date. Keep a separate working ledger and correction log so you can explain how a row was matched, corrected, or excluded without silently changing the original evidence.
Inventory every source before editing the ledger
List every exchange, hosted wallet, self-custody wallet, and related account used during the period you are reconstructing, including accounts that are now closed or inactive. Download transaction histories, trade details, deposit and withdrawal records, statements, and tax documents from each source.

Do not assume an account’s tax report covers your full history. Coinbase says Coinbase.com tax activity excludes Coinbase Wallet and legacy Coinbase Pro activity. It also notes that an inbound deposit from an external wallet may not include Coinbase’s records of the original purchase. See Coinbase tax tools and reports. If an asset was acquired elsewhere, the receiving platform’s deposit date is not necessarily its acquisition date or basis.
Find gaps by comparing imports with original records
For each account, note the date range covered by the import and compare it with the account’s original export or wallet history. Check the earliest and latest dates carefully; gaps at either end can omit an acquisition or disposition. Look for unsupported transaction types, deposits without an acquisition record, withdrawals without a known destination, and activity added manually before an API or CSV import.
TurboTax identifies missing deposit or purchase history as a possible cause of a digital-asset allotment error. Its import guidance is at TurboTax’s digital-asset import troubleshooting.

For each ledger row, retain the source, original transaction identifier if available, timestamp and timezone, asset, quantity, transaction type, fees, and import method. This makes it easier to distinguish a real missing record from an import that covers a different date range or represents the same activity differently.
Trace transfers between your own wallets and accounts
For each withdrawal, search the likely destination for a corresponding deposit. Compare asset, quantity, timestamp, and transaction identifier where available; account for network fees and time-zone differences. Confirm that both the sending and receiving accounts belong to you before treating the movement as a self-transfer.
The IRS describes a transfer between wallets, addresses, or accounts belonging to the same taxpayer as non-taxable, even if an exchange issues an information return. Keep records linking both sides so the withdrawal is not mistaken for a sale and the deposit is not mistaken for a new acquisition. See the IRS virtual-currency FAQ.

An unmatched withdrawal does not by itself prove that a wallet is missing. It may reflect an incomplete history, a different kind of transaction, or a timestamp mismatch. ZenLedger lists missing wallets, duplicates, and timestamp order among possible causes of presumed self-transfer problems; use these as leads to check against source records, not as automatic corrections: ZenLedger’s troubleshooting guide.

Compare suspicious rows with the exchange export or blockchain history. Check transaction identifiers where available, timestamp, asset, quantity, direction, fees, and the source that supplied each row. Overlapping API and CSV imports, or a manual entry followed by an import, can create duplicate-looking records. Similar amounts alone are not proof: separate real transactions can have the same quantity or value.
Vendor documentation identifies these import overlaps as possible duplicate causes. See Koinly’s explanation of duplicated transactions and Kraken’s U.S. Tax Center. Before removing, ignoring, or correcting a row, record the evidence and reason in your correction log, and retain the original exports.

Rebuild acquisition basis and disposition details
For each acquisition
Locate evidence showing the asset and units acquired, date and time, and cost or fair market value in U.S. dollars. Use statements, trade confirmations, wallet history, or other contemporaneous records where available. If the asset arrived from another wallet, trace it back to its original acquisition rather than treating the deposit as a purchase.
For each disposition
Record the date and time, units disposed of, fair market value, and amount of money or property received. Keep transaction and fee details with the record. If you are using specific-unit identification, retain the records supporting which units were identified, as described in IRS guidance.

Coinbase says it may use an external deposit date as an internal placeholder when the original purchase details are absent, and advises using the actual acquisition date to calculate holding period. Do not treat a platform placeholder as proof of when you acquired the asset or what it cost. Find the original record or document what remains unavailable: Coinbase tax tools and reports.
Compare tax forms only after reconciling the ledger
Use broker tax forms and platform summaries as comparison evidence, not as a replacement for a complete transaction history. For covered broker transactions effected on or after January 1, 2025, gross-proceeds reporting on Form 1099-DA applies. Basis reporting applies to certain broker transactions effected on or after January 1, 2026. The IRS says most statements taxpayers receive for 2025 activity will not include basis, so taxpayers may need to calculate it themselves. If a form’s proceeds differ from your reconstructed records, keep both and identify the reason before filing. Investigate missing or duplicate records, period differences, and transaction classification rather than changing ledger figures simply to force a match. A 1099-DA or a single exchange tax page should not be treated as a complete account of all your wallets and platforms.
When to get tax help
This workflow addresses U.S. federal recordkeeping, not every tax classification. If records remain incomplete, a transaction’s character is unclear, or the issue involves DeFi, staking, wrapped tokens, gifts, or business activity, ask a qualified tax professional to review the facts and the tax year involved. State and non-U.S. rules may differ.
