If an unexpected caller claims to be your bank, a government agency, law enforcement, a business, or someone you know, do not trust caller ID to prove who they are. Hang up, then contact that person or organization using a number you find independently. If you have already sent money or shared sensitive information, contact the relevant payment provider or bank promptly and report the scam through official channels.
How can you recognize a phone impersonation scam?
An impersonation scammer pretends to be someone you trust to make you act quickly. The caller may claim there is a crime, unpaid debt, account problem, missed jury duty, expiring license, emergency, prize, or benefit at risk. Common impersonations include government agencies, police, courts, banks, businesses, family members, and romantic contacts.

Warning signs during the call
- The caller pressures you to act immediately or threatens arrest, prosecution, or another severe consequence.
- They demand secrecy, tell you not to consult family or your bank, or insist you stay on the phone.
- They ask you to pay by cryptocurrency, wire transfer, payment app, prepaid or gift card, cash, or courier.
- They ask for account credentials, verification codes, Social Security or bank details, or other sensitive information.
A familiar caller ID, employee number, personal details about you, or polished voice or video is not proof of identity. Scammers can spoof numbers and use convincing details or AI-generated video. The FBI also warns about impostors posing as agency reporting services or offering help through social media. The real FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) does not recover money through social media or paid recovery services; use its official website instead.
Is this caller really from my bank or the government?
You cannot establish that from caller ID or information the caller provides. End the call and verify the claim through a separate channel: find the organization’s contact details on its official website, on a statement, or on the back of your bank card, then call that number yourself. Do not call a number displayed on caller ID or supplied by the caller.

If someone claiming to represent law enforcement or the government demands payment to avoid arrest, prosecution, or an investigation, do not pay. The FBI says authorities will not call or text to demand payment or sensitive information. The FTC’s government-impersonation guidance says: “The FTC will never threaten you, say you must transfer your money to ‘protect it,’ or tell you to withdraw cash or buy gold and give it to someone.”
What should you do during a suspicious call?
- Stop the conversation. Hang up. You do not have to stay on the line because the caller says you must. If it is a robocall, the FTC advises not to press buttons in response.
- Do not share or send anything. Do not give the caller money, passwords, account credentials, verification codes, or personal or financial details. Do not click links in an unexpected message.
- Verify independently. Look up the organization’s contact information yourself and call it to ask whether the claim is real. Do not use caller ID or a number the caller gives you.
- Keep control of the next step. If the caller claims to be from law enforcement or a government agency, do not pay or provide sensitive information under threat. Contact the agency through details you located independently.
What if you already paid or shared information?
Act promptly. Contact the company or financial institution that handled the payment, explain that it was fraudulent, and ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed. Recovery is not guaranteed, but contacting the provider quickly gives you a chance to ask about available action.

Report government or law-enforcement impersonation to IC3
For a scheme impersonating law enforcement or a government agency, use the legitimate IC3 website. The FBI warns that scammers may create lookalike reporting pages or approach victims on social media; IC3 does not recover funds through those channels.
Contact the relevant agency or state attorney general
For a government impersonation, the FTC also recommends reporting it to your state attorney general. If the caller named a particular agency, locate its official contact information independently rather than using details supplied by the caller.

How common are impersonation scams?
The FTC reported $3.5 billion in losses to imposter scams in 2025 and said nearly one in three fraud reports that year concerned imposter scams. Those figures cover impersonation scams across contact methods, not phone-only scams. Separately, the FBI’s IC3 reported nearly 61,000 complaints and more than $1.6 billion in losses from law-enforcement or government impersonation scams between January 2025 and July 2026. The FBI says those schemes primarily used unsolicited calls but could also involve texts and email; they are not phone-only totals.
Can call-blocking tools stop impersonation scams?
Call-blocking apps, carrier services, and devices can reduce unwanted calls, but they cannot authenticate a caller or guarantee that spoofed calls will be blocked. If you consider a tool, check that it works with your phone service, what types of calls or numbers it filters, and its cost and terms. Regardless of the tool, verify unexpected claims by contacting the supposed organization yourself.
