For a small classroom car, that usually means adding a correctly matched battery and charging/control circuit. A direct-drive car with no storage depends on the panel’s output at that moment; better positioning and a freer-running drivetrain can help, but cannot guarantee operation in heavy cloud.
Why clouds can stop a solar car
A photovoltaic panel converts available sunlight into electricity. Clouds reduce the sunlight reaching it, and shade or obstructions can reduce it further. If the panel’s output falls below what the motor needs to start or keep turning, a direct-drive car may slow down or stop. Science Buddies warns that a panel may not generate enough power to spin the motor in shade or cloudy conditions (Build a Solar-Powered Car, 2022).

There is no reliable single percentage for how much a particular car’s panel will produce on a cloudy day. The result depends on the cloud cover, panel, orientation, location, season, time of day, and obstructions. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory explains that latitude, seasonal sun angle, daylight hours, and sky conditions all affect available solar energy (Think Green – Utilizing Renewable Solar Energy).

A battery lets the car use energy collected earlier when current sunlight is weak. In a battery-buffered setup, the panel charges the battery through a suitable charging and control circuit, and the battery supplies the motor as needed. The battery stores energy; it does not create it, and charging and discharging involve losses.

- [Eco Friendly]: By harnessing solar energy, they contribute to energy conservation and reduce the carbon footprint. Not only are these solar car toys fun and engaging, but they also promote environmental sustainability
- [No Batteries Needed]: Each of solar power cay toys includes a solar power panel that collects solar heat energy into an electric energy drive motor, which drives the gears to make the machine run smoothly. Offers your child practical experiences of working with green technology, let them learn about renewable energy sources and have fun doing it with
- [Kids Safe]: All pieces of our solar motor kit are made with non-toxic ABS materials for long lasting, safe and ECO-FRIENDLY science educational toys, parts are smooth without raw edge, ensuring kids play safer and reassure parents
- [Perfect Gifts Toys for Kids]: The solar motor kits are great educational gift for birthday, Children's Day, Christmas, Chanukah, Easter, STEM, summer camp activities, back to school
- [Note]: The car goes fast when it's in the sun. If the sun is not strong, just push it gently, the car can run
That approach is an energy-budget decision: the panel’s output must cover both driving demand and any energy being stored for later. Virginia Tech’s SolarCar team describes balancing solar input with vehicle use, including times when the motor needs more power than the panels are producing. Its full-size vehicle is an example of the principle, not a parts specification for a classroom toy (Virginia Tech Engineering, 2024). The U.S. Department of Energy likewise describes storage as a way to smooth variable solar output, though its discussion is about solar plants rather than small cars (Solar Integration: Solar Energy and Storage Basics).
Match the electrical system
Do not choose a battery by guesswork. Its chemistry, voltage, capacity, charging limits, and protection requirements must suit the panel, motor, and intended runtime. A compatible charge-control arrangement is important; the available guidance establishes the storage principle, not one universal wiring diagram or component set.

- DURABLE & SAFE MATERIALS: Made with non-toxic and premium materials. Weather-resistant components guarantee long-lasting durability for indoor and outdoor adventures
Some classroom activity instructions allow an AA battery pack when sunlight is insufficient, but that does not make every battery pack suitable for every car. Follow the instructions for the kit and any competition rules before changing the power source (Science Buddies, Solar-Powered Cars for Junior Solar Sprints).
Choose between direct solar and battery-buffered power
| Consideration | Direct panel drive | Battery-buffered drive |
|---|---|---|
| Power in clouds | Depends on the panel’s output at that moment; the car may stop if output is too low. | Can draw on previously stored energy when current panel output is weak. |
| Electrical compatibility | Panel output must meet the motor’s starting and running needs. | Panel, charging/control circuit, battery, and motor must all be compatible; no universal combination is established. |
| Weight and losses | No battery mass, but drivetrain friction still wastes limited motor power. | The battery adds mass, and storing energy involves conversion losses. |
| Runtime without strong sunlight | Limited to whatever power the panel currently supplies. | Depends on usable stored energy and how much the motor consumes; capacity cannot be selected without the intended runtime and system requirements. |
| Rules and intended use | Check the applicable build or competition rules. | Check rules before adding storage or backup power. |
Troubleshoot a small solar car before replacing the panel
- Move it into the brightest unobstructed light available. Aim the panel toward the light and check whether the car body or another object is shading it. Science Buddies recommends direct sun and facing the panel toward it (project instructions).
- Check the wiring and motor. Look for loose connections and confirm that the motor can turn freely.
- Reduce mechanical drag. Check whether an axle binds, a wheel rubs the chassis, or extra weight is making the motor work harder.
- Reassess the power mismatch. If the car still cannot start or run in cloud or shade, it needs brighter light or a properly designed battery-buffered system; tuning alone cannot make a weak panel supply more power.
What changes for a full-size solar car
A full-size vehicle has a broader energy budget: panel area and conversion, vehicle mass and aerodynamics, motor demand, speed, and battery reserve all affect how far it can travel. Virginia Tech’s example uses stored solar energy for cloudy conditions and higher-demand driving such as climbing hills. Those system-level choices do not translate into a universal battery size or setup for a small educational car.
