A solar-powered car can drive after dark if its battery has enough usable energy. Solar panels collect sunlight when it is available; the battery stores electricity for later, including nighttime driving. The Sasol Solar Challenge puts it simply: “Solar cars can drive at night, as the battery in a solar car is the energy bank.”
How does a solar car work at night?
At night, the panels cannot collect sunlight, so they do not provide sunlight-derived power. The car runs on electricity stored in its battery, or on energy from another charging source if the vehicle supports one. Squad Mobility, for example, describes its city car as battery-powered and says it can be charged from a standard power socket.

How far can a solar car drive without sun?
There is no single night-range figure for all solar cars. The practical limit is the battery’s usable stored energy compared with how quickly the vehicle consumes it. Battery capacity and vehicle efficiency matter, as do speed, passenger and cargo load, route, road conditions and hills. Solar Challenge materials identify efficiency, vehicle and driver mass, road conditions and topography as factors in solar-car design.
The examples below are not directly comparable: they cover different vehicle types and use different kinds of claims.

| Vehicle or example | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| BluePoint Atlas solar race car | 700 km range without sun | Innoptus Solar Team’s specification for its purpose-built, aerodynamic three-wheeled race car, designed and built in 2020–2021—not a typical passenger-car range. Innoptus Solar Team |
| Toyota Prius PHV solar demonstration, 2019 | About 860 W rated panel output | Toyota’s demonstration system used panels on the roof, hood and rear hatch and was designed to charge the driving battery while parked and while driving. Toyota cited about 180 W for the commercial Prius PHV solar charging system in the same release. Toyota Motor Corporation |
| Squad solar electric city car | Up to 22 km/day in the Netherlands; up to 31 km/day in Spain | Company-stated solar-roof contributions, not night-range figures. Solar contribution varies by location. Squad’s current site plans EU production for 2027 and cautions that schedules can change. Squad Mobility |
Toyota also reported maximum modeled equivalents of up to 44.5 km per day while parked and 56.3 km per day while driving for its 2019 demonstration. These estimates used the JC08 Japan test cycle and average-year solar radiation for Nagoya from 1990–2009, with onboard-system losses considered; they are not guaranteed real-world daily range. The figures describe potential solar contribution, not how far the car can drive through a night.
How much do solar panels contribute?
Panel output and battery storage answer different questions: output indicates how quickly panels can generate electricity in suitable sunlight, while stored usable energy governs driving when sunlight is unavailable. Solar yield also depends on location, conditions and how the vehicle is used.

- The Sasol Solar Challenge educational page describes a maximum panel area of 9 m² and about 1,980 W (nearly 2 kW) under its race rules. These are race-event figures, not typical road-car specifications. The same page describes developed silicon cells as typically around 22% efficient, producing about 220 W per square metre at midday. Sasol Solar Challenge: Solar Energy
- Hyundai reported in 2019 that the New Sonata Hybrid’s solar-roof system could charge 30–60% of the car’s battery per day and support an estimated 1,300 km of additional travel distance annually with six hours of daily charging. These are manufacturer estimates for that hybrid system, not general solar-car performance. Hyundai Motor
- Squad Mobility says its city car can travel up to 150 km on six swappable batteries. That battery-range figure is distinct from the company’s stated daily solar contribution. Squad Mobility
A solar roof can supplement charging without making a vehicle exclusively solar-powered. Hyundai, for example, describes its system as supporting a hybrid vehicle’s electric power source. Whether solar adds meaningful range depends on the particular system and its conditions.

What to check when comparing solar-car claims
- Vehicle type: A specialized race car, a hybrid, a small city car and a passenger EV have different designs and uses.
- What the number measures: Separate range without sun from daily solar contribution, rated panel output and battery capacity.
- How the figure was established: A team specification, manufacturer claim and test-cycle estimate are not interchangeable.
- Conditions: Check the date, geography, sunlight assumptions, test cycle and whether the figure is a maximum or typical value.
The available examples do not establish a controlled, like-for-like nighttime-range comparison across vehicle classes. Treat each quoted range or solar-yield figure as specific to its stated vehicle and source.
