How to Recognize and Avoid Scams Involving Peer-to-Peer Stablecoin Payments

Scammers may build trust or create fear to persuade you to send stablecoins. Learn the warning signs, ways to verify a request, and steps to take after a suspected transfer.

A stablecoin payment request can be part of a scam even when the technology works as designed. The biggest warning is often the person’s story and pressure: an online romantic contact pitching an investment, or an apparent official insisting you move money immediately. Pause, verify independently, and do not send funds to a wallet or platform chosen for you by someone you do not trust.

How stablecoin payment scams typically work

Peer-to-peer stablecoin transfers can feel like ordinary digital payments, but a transfer to the wrong recipient may be difficult or impossible to undo. Scammers often focus on persuading someone to authorize the transfer rather than exploiting a technical flaw in the stablecoin itself.

Romance and investment pitches

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes scams that begin with a wrong-number text, dating app, or social media contact. The person builds trust over weeks, claims to have made money trading, and encourages the target to invest in crypto, including stablecoins. They may direct the target to an unfamiliar trading site that displays apparent gains. A small initial withdrawal may be allowed to build confidence before the target is urged to deposit more. Later, withdrawals may be blocked, or the site may demand new fees or supposed taxes paid out of pocket. The CFTC’s advisory on relationship-investment scams explains this pattern.

Do not treat an account balance, testimonials, or a successful small withdrawal as proof that a platform is legitimate. The CFTC also cautions that registration alone does not protect against fraud. It advises people to avoid digital-asset trading offers from people they meet through dating apps or social media, even if the relationship has been building for weeks or months. Impersonation and urgent payment demands

A scammer may pose as a bank, brokerage, government agency, utility, or technology-support worker and claim you must move funds at once to protect them. They may provide a wallet address or QR code, direct you to a crypto kiosk or unfamiliar app, insist you keep the matter secret, or coach you through the transfer. These are warning signs, not proof that a particular request is fraudulent; stop the conversation and contact the organization using a phone number or website you find independently. The CFTC’s virtual-currency scam guidance describes these tactics.

An ordinary payment request does not require your seed phrase or private keys. Never share them with someone claiming to be an official, support agent, or investment adviser. The Federal Trade Commission’s cryptocurrency scam guidance explains how impersonators use crypto payment demands.

Warning signs to check before sending

  • Urgency or fear: You are told to act immediately to avoid arrest, protect an account, or prevent a loss.
  • Secrecy: The requester says not to tell family, your bank, or anyone else.
  • Unusual payment directions: You are told to use a wallet address, QR code, kiosk, or app supplied by the requester.
  • Guaranteed or effortless returns: Someone you met online promises profits or urges you to increase deposits after showing apparent gains.
  • Withdrawal fees: A platform demands additional money for supposed taxes, fees, or account unlocking before it will release your funds.
  • Coaching through a transfer: Someone stays on the phone or chat and directs each step instead of letting you independently verify what you are doing.

No single sign establishes that a person or platform is fraudulent. Consider the whole request: can you verify the person or organization through an independent official channel, did you choose and understand the destination yourself, and are you being pushed to act or pay more?

How to avoid being pressured into a transfer

  1. Pause the conversation. Do not act while someone is creating urgency, fear, secrecy, or pressure. Do not let a stranger’s link, QR code, or instructions determine where your money goes.
  2. Verify identity and claims independently. Find the organization’s official website or phone number yourself; do not rely on contact details provided by the requester. Research any trading firm and platform before sending funds. Registration is not a guarantee against fraud.
  3. Check the destination. Treat a wallet address or QR code supplied by another person with skepticism, especially if you were not expecting it. CFTC guidance warns that a transfer to an address cannot be reversed.
  4. Get a second opinion. Show the request to a trusted friend, family member, or financial professional before paying. A legitimate request should withstand time for independent review.
  5. Refuse suspicious requests. Do not send stablecoins to an online romantic contact or someone you have only met online. Do not pay extra “taxes,” fees, or recovery charges to unlock an account or retrieve lost money.

For romance-related approaches, the CFTC suggests keeping the conversation on the platform where it began, using reverse-image search, researching people and firms, and seeking another opinion. The FTC advises against sending money or gifts to a sweetheart you have not met in person. See the CFTC advisory and the FTC’s scam guidance.

What to do if you already sent stablecoins

  1. Stop contact and send nothing more. Do not pay a new fee or supposed tax to withdraw funds or recover them.
  2. Contact the service you used promptly. Tell the exchange, wallet service, payment provider, or financial institution that the transfer may be fraudulent. The FTC advises contacting the company or bank right away. Whether it can intervene depends on the service and transaction; a reversal is not guaranteed.
  3. Preserve useful records. Save messages, profile details, websites, transaction identifiers, wallet addresses, receipts, and account or withdrawal screens.
  4. Report the incident. In the United States, report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The CFTC identifies CFTC.gov/complaint and the FBI’s IC3.gov for relevant complaints. Also report the contact on the platform where it began.

Be wary of anyone who approaches you claiming they can recover crypto for a fee. The CFTC warns never to pay more money to get money back. It says recovery is nearly impossible when funds are sent overseas or via virtual currency; reporting is still important, but it does not promise reimbursement. These are U.S. reporting options, and legal remedies may differ elsewhere. See the CFTC advisory.

How widespread are these scams?

The FBI reported $5.8 billion in losses to crypto-asset-related investment frauds in 2024, as cited by the CFTC. That figure covers crypto investment fraud overall, not peer-to-peer stablecoin payments alone. The FTC reported that romance scammers stole more than $1 billion in the prior year in a 2024 alert; that broader figure is not limited to stablecoins. These figures describe different categories and periods, so they should not be combined.
