What to Do If You Find Ash-Like Material in Soil Near Your Home

If you find ash-like material in soil near your home, avoid disturbing it, keep children and pets away, and contact your local health or environmental department for advice. Its color and texture cannot identify what it is or establish whether it is hazardous. The right next step depends on the material’s source, the property’s history, and how you plan to use the soil.

What to do first

  1. Keep people and pets away. Do not let children play in the patch, and avoid walking through it or tracking soil indoors.
  2. Leave the material undisturbed. Do not dig, till, rake, stir, or dry-sweep it; those activities can spread dust.
  3. Contact local officials. Call your local health or environmental department. Describe the location and approximate amount, any nearby fire or ash-producing activity, and whether anyone has touched or inhaled dust from it.
  4. Ask about sampling before testing or cleanup. Find out whether a qualified environmental professional should collect samples, which contaminants to test for, and how to handle or dispose of material if cleanup is needed.

There is no universal test panel or disposal method for unidentified ash-like material. Local rules and accepted waste facilities vary, so do not bag, transport, or discard potentially contaminated ash or soil until you have local instructions.

Can you tell whether it is dangerous?

No—not from appearance alone. Ash-like material could have different sources, and the possible contaminants depend on the source and site history. The U.S. EPA says, “The types of contaminants you are likely to find depend on the history and use of the property.” Ash from a burned structure may be more hazardous than ash from trees or other natural materials, according to the EPA, but that distinction does not identify the material in your yard.

Keep the exposure routes in mind: people can contact soil or dust during play and gardening, or swallow soil on their hands or food. Children are especially likely to have direct contact while playing. If someone has had significant exposure or develops symptoms, wash exposed skin and hands and contact a health professional or local poison or public-health service.

How to arrange soil testing

Ask local officials or a qualified environmental professional to help match the suspected source, sampling locations, depths, and intended land use to an appropriate test. A generic garden soil test should not be treated as proof that unknown ash is safe.

  • Match the test panel to the source. Potential concerns differ for ash from a burned building, natural vegetation, coal, industrial residue, or ordinary soil amendments. Do not assume which one is present.
  • Check the laboratory’s qualifications. For soil lead analysis, the EPA identifies laboratories accredited under its National Lead Laboratory Accreditation Program (NLLAP) as an option; some local health departments may also offer soil lead testing.
  • Make sure the sampling answers your question. The right locations and depths depend on whether you are assessing a play area, garden, or another use. Ask how results should be interpreted under applicable local criteria.

Do not apply a result or cleanup threshold from another property to your soil automatically. For example, the EPA reported in a May 19, 2026 release that its Eaton Fire follow-up program sampled 100 randomly selected properties in the Eaton Fire area using 4,200 soil borings. It found lead below the federal screening level on 98 of those properties in subsurface soil and 95 in surface soil. The release reported median lead concentrations of 31 mg/kg in surface soil (0–1 inch) and 21 mg/kg in subsurface soil (6–7 inches), compared with the cited 200 mg/kg screening level. Those figures describe that specific California cleanup and its sampled properties—not other yards. A screening level is not a universal declaration that soil below it is safe for every person or use.

Can you garden in the affected spot?

Do not use suspected ash from a recent fire as fertilizer or a soil conditioner. If contamination is possible, defer growing food in the affected patch until testing and local advice support a plan. The EPA recommends testing soil used for food crops and taking protective measures where lead contamination is a concern.

If local officials say the area may be affected but can still be used with precautions, covering bare soil or growing in raised beds or containers with clean soil can reduce contact. These measures do not remove contaminants from the underlying soil. Wash produce before eating it.

If handling is unavoidable

Follow local instructions first. The CDC’s wildfire-ash cleanup guidance recommends protective clothing and a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator to reduce exposure to ash. This is exposure-reduction advice for ash cleanup, not a guarantee that the soil is safe or a substitute for professional handling when warranted. Keep dust down, wash ash from skin promptly, and avoid bringing dusty clothing, shoes, or tools into clean indoor areas. Do not assume a generic mask provides equivalent protection.
