It is an aggregate Windows 11 category that includes reserved capacity for temporary files, caches, update work and other system-managed data. The number can grow before an update, after a feature upgrade or when restore points and previous installations are present. To reduce it safely, first expand Settings > System > Storage, identify the items behind the total, and use Windows’ own cleanup tools. Do not manually remove files from protected system locations.
What “System & reserved” means in Windows 11
Windows Storage settings group several kinds of space under System & reserved. Microsoft describes reserved storage as a portion of the drive set aside for temporary files, caches and other files. When available capacity becomes low, Windows can release some of that reserved space for other work, including a Windows update. The displayed figure is therefore a managed category, not the size of a single removable directory.

The total can include space needed to stage an update, maintain rollback files, support optional Windows features and languages, hold restore-point data, and keep system components functioning. It can also look large because the Storage page is reporting several system-managed areas together while personal files and applications are shown in separate categories.
A large figure is not automatically a fault. The useful question is which subcategory increased, whether you need rollback or recovery protection, and how much free space an upcoming operation requires.

Diagnose the increase before deleting anything
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select System & reserved to expand its details. Also open Temporary files and Cleanup recommendations; important removable items may be listed in those areas instead of appearing as one obvious “System” file.
- In Cleanup recommendations, let Windows analyze the drive. Review the proposed groups, which can include temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, and rarely used apps.
- Record how much free space remains before removing anything. If the immediate goal is an update, compare that free space with the update-space requirements described below.
This inspection separates ordinary cleanup from changes that affect recovery. If the increase followed a feature upgrade, look specifically for Previous Windows Installation(s) and the Windows.old rollback copy. If it followed driver or configuration changes, check the amount allocated to System Protection before reducing it.
Safe ways to reclaim space
1. Start with Cleanup recommendations
Cleanup recommendations is the safest first pass because it evaluates the device and presents categories for review. Select an item to see what Windows intends to remove, then approve only the entries you no longer need. Large personal files and unused applications can often free more space than system-file cleanup, while leaving Windows’ protected files intact.
Removal is not a universal undo operation. A temporary file that still exists elsewhere may be recreated, but a deleted download, unused application or cleanup target is recoverable only if you have another copy or a backup. Check each category rather than selecting every checkbox automatically.

2. Configure Storage Sense for recurring cleanup
Go to Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense. Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin items automatically. Microsoft documents that it is off by default, although Windows may turn it on when disk space is low.

Review its schedules and scope before enabling it. Downloads and cloud content are not managed unless you explicitly configure those options, so important files in Downloads will not necessarily be protected by the default settings. If you use a cloud provider with Files On-Demand, configure the service separately and verify which files remain local.
3. Remove a previous Windows installation only after the rollback window
In Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, Windows may list Previous Windows Installation(s). This is commonly the Windows.old installation retained after a feature upgrade so that you can return to the earlier version.
Delete it only when the new installation works correctly and you are certain you will not need to go back. Microsoft warns that removing Windows.old permanently removes the ability to return to the previous Windows version; the action cannot be undone. If a new driver, application or setting is unstable, keep this rollback copy until you have tested the system.

Search for Disk Cleanup, choose the system drive, then select Clean up system files. Re-scan the drive, review the categories and confirm only the items you understand. This legacy interface can expose system cleanup choices that are not obvious in the initial Storage view, but it still requires the same caution about rollback and recovery data.

5. Move personal data instead of deleting system data
If videos, project archives, installers or photo libraries are consuming the drive, move them to another internal or external drive and verify the copies before deleting the originals. OneDrive Files On-Demand can keep a smaller local placeholder for cloud files while the full content remains online; use it only when you understand which files must stay available offline.
Recovery storage: the trade-off you should understand
System Protection creates restore points that contain system files, installed applications, the Registry and settings. They can reverse a bad driver, update or configuration change, but the space they use is part of the storage picture. You can configure the maximum disk usage for restore points through the System Protection settings.
Microsoft’s point-in-time restore documentation says restore points are retained for up to 72 hours, with a default maximum usage limit of 2% of disk space. A restore requires free space at least equal to the total size of all restore points. Classic System Restore can have a higher storage impact and retains points subject to available disk space.
Reducing the allocation or deleting restore points may recover capacity, but it also reduces the number and coverage of recovery states available after a failure. Treat this as a deliberate reliability decision, not routine cleanup. Do not delete data in System Volume Information manually; use the supported System Protection controls.

Why Windows updates need so much free space
A typical Windows feature update needs about 6–11 GB or more, according to Microsoft Support’s 2026 guidance. A typical quality update needs about 2–3 GB or more. These are planning figures, not a guarantee for every edition, language pack or optional feature.
Windows needs room to download the package, stage optional features and languages, apply the new files, and retain temporary rollback data while installation is in progress. For devices with reserved storage, the update uses that reserved capacity before consuming other free space. During a feature update, Windows may temporarily disable hiberfile.sys, pagefile.sys and other system files, then automatically re-enable them after installation.
That temporary behavior explains why the System & reserved number can change during an update and later fall again. It is not a reason to delete those files yourself.

Which fix fits your situation?
| Action | Space effect | Reversibility | Effect on recovery protection | Future behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cleanup recommendations | Varies with temporary files, previous installations, large files and unused apps found | Files are recoverable only if another copy remains | Review each category before approving | One-time cleanup |
| Storage Sense | Frees temporary files and Recycle Bin items according to its configuration | Removed files are not generally restored by Storage Sense | Does not replace restore points | Automates recurring cleanup; off by default unless enabled or activated when space is low |
| Delete Previous Windows Installation(s) | Removes the Windows.old rollback copy | Irreversible for returning to the previous Windows version | Reduces operating-system rollback protection | No automatic rollback to the earlier version |
| Reduce System Protection allocation | Can reclaim space currently reserved for restore points | Existing restore points may be deleted | Fewer restore states and less recovery coverage | Limits future restore-point storage |
| Move files or use Files On-Demand | Removes full local copies while preserving access elsewhere | Restorable when the external or cloud copy is available | Does not change Windows recovery data | Changes where personal data is stored locally |
| External-storage update workflow | Adds update capacity without changing the internal layout | Internal system files remain in place | Preserves internal rollback and recovery choices | Requires the external device during the update |
What not to delete manually
Do not browse into protected locations and remove files because they appear large. In particular, avoid manual deletion from C:Windows, WinSxS, System Volume Information, pagefile.sys and hiberfile.sys. Windows manages these files and their dependencies; deleting them can break servicing, boot behavior, hibernation, paging, restore points or recovery.

Use Settings, Disk Cleanup, System Protection and the supported update workflow instead. If a cleanup tool reports an item that you do not recognize, leave it selected for later investigation rather than guessing from its filename.
If System & reserved is still enormous
- Reopen the expanded Storage breakdown and compare it with the previous measurement. A delayed recalculation can make the headline total lag behind a completed cleanup.
- Check whether a feature upgrade recently completed and whether Previous Windows Installation(s) remains.
- Review System Protection’s configured usage and existing restore points before changing the limit.
- Look for optional Windows features and language packs that you installed but no longer use.
- Check large personal files outside the System & reserved category; Storage’s category totals can make a different location appear responsible at first glance.
- Run Disk Cleanup’s Clean up system files pass and restart Windows if the cleanup requires a restart to finish.
If the total continues to grow rapidly, note when it changes and which Windows operation preceded it. A feature update, failed update attempt or new restore point can each produce a different pattern. Continue using supported tools rather than trying to “empty” a system directory.
Use external storage when an update cannot fit
When internal free space remains below the update requirement, Microsoft supports an external-storage update workflow. The external device must have at least 10 GB of free space. A 128 GB USB flash drive or external SSD provides more working room, but the requirement is the available free space, not a particular capacity label.
- Back up important files before starting.
- Connect the external drive and ensure it has at least 10 GB free.
- Start Windows Update and follow the prompt for using external storage when it appears.
- Keep the drive connected until Windows confirms that installation is complete.
- Remove it only after that confirmation, then verify that Windows boots and the update reports success.
External storage preserves the internal system layout and avoids deleting rollback or restore data solely to make room. It does, however, add a device that must remain connected throughout the update and should be handled carefully to avoid interruption.
A practical decision order
For most PCs, the least risky order is: inspect Storage, approve only suitable Cleanup recommendations, clear temporary files with Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup, move personal data, and remove Windows.old only after you no longer need rollback. Consider changing System Protection limits only after weighing the recovery loss. If the update still cannot fit, use the supported external-storage method instead of deleting protected files.
