For the complete Fourth World experience, read Jack Kirby’s launch material in publication order: Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #133–148, The New Gods #1–11, The Forever People #1–11, and Mister Miracle #1–18, then finish with The Hunger Dogs. If you only want Scott Free’s story, read Kirby’s Mister Miracle #1–18 and then Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ 12-issue Mister Miracle (2017) miniseries.
Tom King’s series is a modern standalone interpretation, not a missing chapter that requires every Fourth World issue first. The longer route supplies the mythology and publication context; the focused route gets you to both major Mister Miracle runs with far less reading.

Choose your reading route first
There are two sound answers to “What order should I read Mister Miracle?” Your choice depends on whether you want the entire Fourth World architecture or Scott Free’s title as the main thread.

|---|---|---|---|
| Complete Kirby chronology | Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #133–148; The New Gods #1–11; The Forever People #1–11; Mister Miracle #1–18; The Hunger Dogs | Readers who want the Fourth World as Kirby launched it | The cross-title buildup, parallel casts and concluding Kirby graphic novel |
| Focused Mister Miracle path | Jack Kirby’s Mister Miracle #1–18, followed by Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Mister Miracle (2017) #1–12 | Readers primarily interested in Scott Free | Both complete Mister Miracle runs without requiring every related title |
| Broad entry point | DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die, then continue with the missing Kirby material | New readers who want launch context in one paperback | Foundational opening issues, but not all 18 Kirby Mister Miracle issues |
Neither route is “wrong.” The complete chronology gives recurring ideas and supporting characters more room to develop. The focused route keeps the reading burden manageable and moves directly from Kirby’s original series to King’s later reimagining.

Route A: read the complete Kirby Fourth World chronology
Kirby’s Fourth World was designed as a connected group of books rather than one isolated title. The order below follows the publication flow represented by DC’s omnibus program. Because individual omnibus editions divide and interleave issues differently, use the table of contents in the edition you own when it specifies a more precise sequence.
1. Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #133–148
Begin with the issues of Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen that Kirby used to launch the Fourth World. They introduce the visual language, new conflicts and concepts that the other series expand. These issues are not a detour from Mister Miracle; they are the doorway into the shared setting.
Read the issues included by your selected omnibus or collection. The exact contents can vary by edition, so check its contents page rather than assuming that every Superman-related issue belongs to the Fourth World sequence. The chronology supplied for the complete route runs through #148.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. The New Gods #1–11
Next read Kirby’s complete 11-issue The New Gods run. This title establishes the larger cosmic conflict and the worlds in which Scott Free’s story takes place. It also gives names, relationships and political stakes that can otherwise feel abrupt when encountered only through Mister Miracle.
Reading all 11 issues before moving on is a practical way to keep the central mythology together, but omnibus readers should follow the edition’s interleaving when it places issues beside the other Fourth World books.
3. The Forever People #1–11
Continue with the 11 issues of The Forever People. This series broadens the cast and shows another perspective on the same Fourth World tensions. Its ideas echo across the other books, so reading it before or alongside Mister Miracle makes later references easier to recognize.

4. Jack Kirby’s Mister Miracle #1–18
Kirby’s complete Mister Miracle run is issues #1–18. This is the essential primary text for Scott Free, his public identity and his life as an escape artist caught in the Fourth World struggle.
DC’s focused collection gathers all 18 issues in one stand-alone color volume. That book is 448 pages and was released September 20, 2017. If you are following Route A through separate omnibus volumes, do not assume that all 18 issues appear together; the omnibus strategy is chronological across titles.
5. The Hunger Dogs
Finish Kirby’s Fourth World sequence with The Hunger Dogs, identified by DC as DC Graphic Novel #4. In the later omnibus configuration it appears as the concluding Kirby Fourth World graphic novel, alongside the remaining series material. Treat it as the endpoint of Kirby’s original Fourth World presentation rather than as another numbered Mister Miracle issue.
How the omnibus chronology is interleaved
DC’s Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus books are organized chronologically across The New Gods, The Forever People, Mister Miracle and Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen. That means an omnibus may ask you to switch titles instead of finishing one complete series before starting the next.
Volume 2 illustrates the method with this grouped sequence:

| Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen | #141–145 |
| Mister Miracle | #4–6 |
This arrangement preserves the original publication flow, but the exact page order belongs to the edition in your hands. If your omnibus table of contents places a title slightly earlier or later, follow that printed order. If you are reading single-title collections, the five-part Route A list remains a clear chronological framework.

Route B: the focused Mister Miracle path
Choose this route when your priority is Scott Free rather than every Fourth World launch book.
- Read Jack Kirby’s Mister Miracle #1–18. Use the complete 448-page color collection or an equivalent edition that contains all 18 issues.
- Move directly to Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Mister Miracle (2017) #1–12. The series is a complete 12-issue miniseries collected in book form.
You do not have to insert The New Gods, The Forever People or Jimmy Olsen between those two steps. Their material enriches the setting, but King’s miniseries can be read after Kirby’s Mister Miracle without completing the entire Fourth World chronology.
Where Tom King’s Mister Miracle fits
Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Mister Miracle is a 12-issue miniseries published in 2017 and collected on February 13, 2019. It follows Kirby’s series in the focused reading path, but it is not a direct issue-by-issue continuation of Kirby’s original publication run.

The distinction matters because the two books have different purposes. Kirby’s 18 issues establish the character inside the original Fourth World experiment. King’s 12 issues use that foundation for a modern, self-contained interpretation. Reading Kirby first lets you recognize the inherited mythology; reading King afterward lets you see how a later creative team reframes it without requiring every related Fourth World title.
If you start with King’s book, you can still understand it as a complete miniseries. You will simply encounter its Fourth World references without the accumulated context of Kirby’s launch sequence. For the most economical order, Kirby #1–18 followed by King #1–12 is the cleanest handoff.

- The New Gods #1–4
- The Forever People #1–5
- Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #133–139 and #141
- Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane #111 and #115, plus pages from #114
This is a useful orientation book if you want the foundational opening issues across several titles before committing to larger collections. It is not a substitute for the complete Kirby Mister Miracle run: it stops at issue #4, while the full series runs through #18.
After reading DC Finest, choose one of two continuations:
- Complete the broader chronology: obtain the remaining Kirby Fourth World issues and follow the omnibus or Route A sequence.
- Return to Scott Free: continue with a collection containing Mister Miracle #5–18, then read King and Gerads’ 12-issue miniseries.
Availability and pricing can change, so verify the edition and contents when you buy. The important difference is scope, not branding: DC Finest is an opening sampler, whereas the focused Kirby collection is the complete 18-issue title.

What to expect from each route
The complete route emphasizes shared mythology
Reading all four core series in publication order shows how the Fourth World was built through parallel books. A character, idea or conflict can first appear in one title and gain meaning in another. The benefit is continuity of atmosphere and escalation across the entire project. The cost is switching protagonists and tones before returning to Scott Free.
The focused route emphasizes momentum
Reading Mister Miracle #1–18 as a single run keeps the central character in view. You will miss some cross-title buildup, but you will not lose the basic shape of Kirby’s series. King’s 12-issue miniseries then functions as a clearly separated modern work rather than another stop in an already long omnibus sequence.
The DC Finest route emphasizes sampling
The paperback is appropriate when you want to test the Fourth World’s opening concepts before investing in complete collections. Because it contains only the first four Mister Miracle issues, plan the next book before you begin if your end goal is the full 18-issue run.

A practical reading plan for new readers
- Decide whether “complete” means complete Kirby or complete Mister Miracle. Select Route A for the former and Route B for the latter.
- Match the collection to that goal. Check issue numbers, not just a cover title. A Fourth World collection may contain several series, while the focused book should state #1–18.
- Follow printed contents when using an omnibus. The omnibus chronology is intentionally interleaved; do not rearrange it into title-by-title blocks unless you prefer that experience.
- Keep the two modern milestones separate. Kirby’s #1–18 is the original run; King and Gerads’ #1–12 is a later miniseries. Labeling them separately prevents confusion when collections use similar cover titles.
- Use The Hunger Dogs as the Kirby endpoint. It belongs after the collected series material in the complete route, not inside the numbered Mister Miracle sequence.
Common questions about the order
Do I need to read all of Kirby’s Fourth World before Tom King?
No. Read Kirby’s complete Mister Miracle #1–18 first, then King and Gerads’ 12-issue miniseries. The other Fourth World titles are optional context for that focused path.
Is Tom King’s series a continuation of issue #18?
It is best approached as a modern standalone interpretation that follows Kirby historically, not as a numbered continuation of the original 18-issue series.
Why does the omnibus make me switch between titles?
DC arranged the core Fourth World books in chronological publication order. The interleaving preserves how the titles originally appeared and developed alongside one another.
Does DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die contain the whole Kirby Mister Miracle run?
No. It contains Mister Miracle #1–4 and related launch issues. The complete Kirby title is #1–18.
Where does The Hunger Dogs belong?
Place it at the end of the complete Kirby Fourth World route. It is a concluding graphic novel, not a numbered Mister Miracle issue.
