How to Read DAX Index Performance and Daily Percentage Changes

The DAX daily percentage is the index’s change from the previous official session close to its current level: ((current level − previous close) ÷ previous close) × 100. A quote such as +2.0% means the displayed DAX level is 2% above that reference close, not that every German share or every DAX-linked investment gained 2%. Before interpreting the number, identify whether the quote is the DAX performance index, price index or a net-return variant, and whether it is an intraday tick or a completed closing return.

What the DAX daily percentage change measures

The percentage on a DAX quote is a normalized comparison between two index levels. For a session or live quote, use:

Daily change (%) = ((Current DAX level − Previous session close) / Previous session close) × 100

Suppose the previous close was 18,000 and the current level is 18,360. The calculation is ((18,360 − 18,000) / 18,000) × 100 = 2.0%. A reading of −2.0% means the current level is 2% below that close. The points move is 360 in the example; the percentage expresses that move relative to the starting level, making it easier to compare sessions at different index levels.

Intraday percentage versus the final daily return

During trading, the percentage changes whenever the index level changes. A screen labelled “+2.0%” at midday is an intraday result measured against the previous close, not a final daily return. The completed session figure uses the official closing level. When recording a result for a report or performance log, write the reference explicitly—for example, “+2.0% since previous close at 13:15 UTC” or “+2.0% official session close”—so a later reader knows which number was used.

Points and percentage are different readings

Index points are the absolute difference between two levels. Percent is that difference divided by the reference level. Two sessions can each move 360 points but have different percentages if their starting levels differ. Conversely, equal percentage moves produce different point changes at different index levels.

First identify which DAX series you are seeing

“The DAX” normally refers to the DAX performance index, but data services also publish price and net-return versions. Their percentages are not interchangeable because each series handles distributions differently.

Series What it represents How distributions are treated Use it when
Performance index Total-return style benchmark for the index portfolio Dividend and bonus income is reinvested You want the commonly quoted DAX benchmark or a reinvestment-inclusive long-term series
Price index Movement in constituent share prices Price performance is shown with specified adjustments for rights and special distributions; ordinary dividend reinvestment is not modeled as in the performance index You need a price-only comparison or are matching a provider that explicitly labels a price series
Net-return variant Performance after an assumed withholding-tax treatment Dividends are reinvested after the applicable tax assumption used by the index methodology You are comparing total returns on a tax-adjusted basis and have confirmed the provider’s exact variant

Check the instrument name, ticker description or methodology label before comparing charts. A performance-index chart can rise faster than a price-index chart over a dividend-paying period even when the constituent share prices followed the same path. A net-return series can differ again because its withholding-tax assumption is part of the index definition.

What the DAX represents

The DAX tracks 40 of the largest and highest-turnover German stocks, selected by market capitalization under the index rules. Deutsche Börse has calculated it since 1 July 1988. The benchmark is designed to represent roughly 80% of the market capitalization of listed stock corporations in Germany and about 90% of stock-market turnover in German shares.

Those coverage figures describe the benchmark’s intended representation of the German equity market; they do not mean that each company or sector contributes equally. The index is capitalization weighted using each constituent’s free-float market capitalization. Free float is the portion of shares considered available for public trading under the methodology, rather than every share outstanding. A company with a larger eligible market value therefore has a larger influence on the index level.

Why one stock can matter more than another

If a high-weight constituent rises 1%, its effect on the DAX is larger than a 1% rise in a low-weight constituent. Several smaller constituents can rise while a heavily weighted company falls, leaving the index flat or negative. The reverse can also happen: a move in one or two large constituents can lift the DAX while many smaller shares decline. The index is a weighted benchmark, not an average in which every stock gets one vote.

How the DAX is calculated and timed

The DAX is calculated and updated every second during its calculation window from prices on the Xetra trading venue. Its formula is a Laspeyres-style calculation. In practical terms, the calculation combines current constituent prices with each stock’s share quantity, free-float factor and other adjustment factors, then applies a chaining factor to keep the index continuous when the composition or capital structure changes.

This design lets the index reflect tradable market value while preventing a split, rights issue, constituent change or other defined corporate action from creating a purely mechanical jump that does not represent an economic market move. The exact adjustment is handled under the index rules; a reader should not try to infer it from the headline percentage alone.

When the daily calculation starts

Deutsche Börse’s current explainer says calculation begins when opening prices for all components are available, or at 09:06 at the latest. If a component has not yet produced an opening price, an early displayed value may not be the final synchronized opening reference you expect. For time-sensitive records, note the timestamp and whether the quote is an opening, live or delayed value.

When the last official tick is disseminated

The same explainer states that the last DAX tick is disseminated at 18:00. A quote after that time may be a vendor’s indicative, futures or extended-hours display rather than a new official cash-index tick. Confirm the instrument label and market calendar before treating an evening number as the DAX session close.

A reliable method for reading any DAX quote

  1. Read the full label. Look for “DAX,” “DAX price,” “DAX net return,” or an equivalent provider description. Do not assume an unlabeled chart uses the performance index.
  2. Check the timestamp and status. Determine whether the value is live, delayed, an opening value, an intraday tick or an official close. Record the exchange date as well as your local time.
  3. Find the reference close. For a daily percentage, use the previous official session close for the same series. A provider’s “change” field may instead be week-to-date, month-to-date or another selected interval.
  4. Recalculate when the label is unclear. Subtract the previous close from the current level, divide by the previous close and multiply by 100. Round only at the end; early rounding can create a small discrepancy.
  5. Check the sign and units. “+” or green usually indicates a level above the reference; “−” or red indicates below it. Confirm that the number is percent, not points.
  6. State the basis in your note. A useful record includes the series, date, current level, previous close, time, percentage and whether the figure is intraday or final.

Worked example with an intraday quote

Assume a performance-index quote shows 18,360 at 13:15 and the previous performance-index close was 18,000. The live calculation is +2.0% since the previous close. If the index later finishes at 18,270, the official daily return becomes +1.5%: ((18,270 − 18,000) / 18,000) × 100. Both figures are correct for their timestamps, but only the latter describes the completed session.

Why your German-stock holdings may not match the DAX

A DAX percentage is a benchmark return. Your portfolio is a different calculation with its own holdings, weights and transaction conditions. Even a fund intended to follow the DAX can differ from the index because of fees, tracking difference, tax treatment, cash balances, rebalancing and the timing at which its shares trade.

  • Constituent selection: You may own German companies outside the 40 DAX constituents, or only a subset of the index.
  • Weighting: Your position sizes may not match free-float capitalization weights.
  • Series choice: A fund or chart may track a price, performance or net-return version while you are viewing another.
  • Fees and expenses: Product charges reduce an investor’s return even when the underlying benchmark is unchanged.
  • Tracking difference: Replication method, rebalancing, lending income, cash drag and trading costs can move a product away from its target index.
  • Taxes and distributions: The index methodology and your account may apply different withholding or capital-gains rules.
  • Currency: The DAX level is quoted in euros. A holder measuring results in another currency also has an exchange-rate return.
  • Trading timing: An ETF’s traded price can reflect its own order book, spreads and time zone while the cash index is being updated from Xetra prices.

For a meaningful comparison, align the series, observation dates, currency and return basis before attributing the difference to tracking quality or stock selection.

Compare two DAX readings on the same basis

Comparison item Question to answer Why it changes the interpretation
Variant Performance, price or net return? Dividend treatment and tax assumptions alter the index level and return
Time basis Intraday tick, official close, week-to-date or year-to-date? Each uses a different reference point and may not be final
Reference value Previous session close or a chosen earlier date? The denominator determines the percentage
Currency and instrument Euro index points or a security traded in another currency? Price, exchange-rate and market-hours effects can be mixed
Return basis Benchmark return or investor return after costs and taxes? Personal results include product and account effects absent from the index

For example, comparing a year-to-date performance-index chart with a one-month price-index percentage answers two different questions. Put both observations on the same variant and time interval before drawing a trend conclusion.

Calculating DAX changes in a spreadsheet

Place the previous close in cell B2 and the current level in C2. In a spreadsheet, enter =(C2-B2)/B2 and format the result as a percentage. To display one decimal place, use the spreadsheet’s percentage formatting rather than rounding the index levels first. A negative value is preserved automatically when C2 is below B2.

For a series of daily closes, keep one row per official session and compare each close with the row immediately above it. Do not compare Monday’s close with Friday’s close and call it a one-day move if a holiday or exchange closure intervened; label the interval as the previous session instead. If a data feed supplies a percentage field, retain the provider’s timestamp and series label so you can reconcile any rounding difference.

Choosing a reference for longer periods

Week-to-date, month-to-date and year-to-date changes use the same basic formula but replace the previous-session close with the level at the start of the chosen period. State that starting date explicitly. A year-to-date percentage based on a performance index is not directly comparable with a price-index year-to-date percentage, even when both begin on the same calendar day.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Calling an intraday tick the final daily result

Symptom: A midday percentage is quoted as “today’s return.” Fix: Add the timestamp and “since previous close,” or wait for the official session close before using “daily return.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixing performance and price indexes

Symptom: Two reputable charts show different long-term percentages. Fix: Inspect the series names and dividend treatment. Compare like with like, or explain the variant difference in the heading.

Assuming every component has equal influence

Symptom: The DAX rises even though more stocks in a personal watchlist fell. Fix: Check free-float market-cap weighting and identify whether larger constituents offset declines elsewhere.

Using an ETF price as the index level

Symptom: A fund’s quote does not match the DAX percentage. Fix: Separate the ETF’s traded price from the benchmark, then account for currency, fees, distributions, spreads and tracking difference.

Ignoring the exchange session

Symptom: A value captured before all openings or after the final cash-market tick is treated as a regular session observation. Fix: Check the Xetra-based timestamp, exchange calendar and whether the provider has switched to a derivative or indicative quote.

Putting large moves in context

Deutsche Börse records the largest daily DAX gain in its historical facts as 11.40% on 3 October 2008. That is a single historical session, not a normal expectation for a daily move. When a percentage looks unusually large, verify the date, reference close, series, corporate-action handling and whether a data correction or delayed quote is involved before assuming the market moved by that amount.

Extreme percentages also make the distinction between points and percent especially important. A move that appears modest in points can be a large percentage at a lower index level, while the same point move later in the index’s history represents a smaller percentage.

What DAX-linked products use the index for

The benchmark underlies categories including exchange-traded funds, futures, options, structured products and passively managed funds. Historical and end-of-day DAX data is also licensed for financial analysis and reporting. The existence of a product linked to the DAX does not establish that it tracks the performance index, uses the same valuation time or delivers the headline percentage after costs. Read the product’s benchmark description, distribution policy, currency and valuation rules before comparing its return with a DAX quote.

A compact checklist for interpreting “What did the DAX do today?”

  • Which series is displayed: performance, price or net return?
  • What is the exact timestamp, and is the quote live, delayed or an official close?
  • Is the percentage measured from the previous session close or another date?
  • Are the number’s units percent or index points?
  • Does the 40-stock, free-float-weighted benchmark represent the exposure you are trying to measure?
  • If you are comparing an investment, have you allowed for fees, taxes, currency, distributions, tracking difference and trading time?

Answering those questions turns a headline number into a reproducible calculation. The DAX percentage tells you how one defined index series moved against one defined reference; it does not, by itself, describe every German stock or an individual investor’s return.
