The fastest reliable way to read an ASML earnings report is to move in sequence: verify reported sales and profit, measure new orders through bookings, judge revenue visibility through backlog, explain gross margin with product and service mix, and then test management’s guidance against the previous outlook and stated risks. That sequence separates what ASML has already delivered from what it expects to deliver.
ASML’s latest listed results package is for the quarter ended September 27, 2026, released October 14, 2026. It includes the earnings release, financial statements, presentation, prepared remarks and video transcript. Read the release first, then use the companion documents to confirm definitions, operating detail and management’s assumptions.

Start with the official results package
ASML’s investor-relations quarterly-results hub is the authoritative starting point. The Q3 2026 package contains the release and companion financial statements, presentation, prepared remarks and transcript. The release says the statements for the quarter and the nine months ended September 27, 2026 are unaudited. ASML says its quarterly earnings releases and annual reports primarily use US GAAP, so comparisons with companies reporting under different accounting conventions require care.

1. Read the headline income statement before the narrative
Begin with what was actually recognized as revenue and profit. For Q3 2026, ASML reported the following figures:
| Q3 2026 measure | Reported amount | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Total net sales | €11.662 billion | Revenue recognized during the quarter |
| Gross profit | €6.700 billion | Sales less cost of sales |
| Gross margin | 57.5% | Gross profit divided by net sales |
| Net income | €4.960 billion | Profit attributable after operating, financial and tax items |
| Basic earnings per share | €12.95 | Net income allocated to each basic share |
For context, Q2 2026 net sales were €9.326 billion and gross margin was 54.0%. The useful question is not simply whether Q3 was higher; it is whether the quarter was above, within or below the company’s preceding guidance and whether the difference came from sustainable demand, timing or mix.
Separate reported performance from interpretation
Sales are recorded when ASML’s accounting rules recognize the transaction; bookings are accepted orders; backlog is accepted work that has not yet become sales. Those three numbers describe different points in the commercial cycle. A strong sales quarter can coexist with weak new bookings if the company is shipping older orders, while high bookings can coexist with modest sales when delivery and acceptance occur later.
Check at least four quarters for sales, gross margin, operating expenses, net income and earnings per share. Look for changes in the relationship between bookings and sales rather than assuming that one unusually strong or weak quarter establishes a new trend.
2. Understand what ASML means by bookings
ASML defines net bookings as “all system sales orders and inflation-related adjustments, for which written authorizations have been accepted.” In practical terms, bookings measure order intake: customers have formally authorized purchases, but ASML may not have shipped the systems or recognized the associated revenue yet.
Why bookings and sales diverge
An accepted order can remain in the manufacturing and delivery pipeline for multiple quarters. Shipment schedules, customer site readiness, system installation, acceptance procedures, production capacity and export requirements all affect when that order becomes revenue. Therefore:

- Bookings above quarterly sales generally indicate that accepted demand is entering the pipeline faster than it is being recognized.
- Bookings below sales can mean ASML is converting a previously accumulated order queue.
- A single quarter’s bookings can be distorted by a few large system orders or by customers changing delivery timing.
Read bookings beside backlog and sales. Bookings alone do not tell you how quickly ASML can convert demand into revenue or profit.
What the FY2025 figures show
In its FY2025 release, ASML reported Q4 2025 net bookings of €13.158 billion, rounded in the release to €13.2 billion, including €7.4 billion of EUV bookings. Full-year 2025 net bookings were €28.035 billion. The EUV portion matters because EUV systems have different economics, production schedules and strategic importance from other system categories. When an EUV split is disclosed, record both the total and the mix rather than treating total bookings as a complete demand signal.
Do not annualize a large booking quarter mechanically. Orders can be rescheduled, pushed out or, in some circumstances, canceled. The quality of bookings depends on customer authorization, product mix, delivery timing and the probability of conversion.
3. Treat backlog as visibility, not guaranteed revenue
ASML defines backlog as “accumulated sales values for all system sales orders and inflation-related adjustments, for which written authorizations have been accepted, and not yet recorded in total net sales.” Backlog is therefore the value of accepted work still awaiting recognition as sales.
What backlog can tell you
A large backlog can support revenue visibility because it represents contracted or authorized work already in the order book. It can also show whether bookings are accumulating faster than ASML can manufacture and deliver systems. Year-end FY2025 backlog was €38.797 billion, a substantial pool of accepted orders entering 2026.

- Customer concentration: a small number of customers can influence delivery decisions and timing.
- Cancellations and push-outs: customers may delay or alter orders when their own capacity plans change.
- Export controls and geopolitics: regulatory restrictions can affect whether and when a system can be delivered.
- Production capacity: component shortages, supplier constraints or installation capacity can defer conversion.
ASML’s Q3 2026 risk language specifically identifies order timing, backlog realization, cancellations, export controls, customer demand and supply-chain capacity. A backlog increase is encouraging only when the company can convert it under those conditions.
4. Read gross margin through mix, not as a standalone score
Gross margin is gross profit divided by net sales. The Q3 calculation is €6.700 billion divided by €11.662 billion, producing 57.5%. That percentage tells you how much of each euro of recognized sales remained after the direct cost of products and services, before operating expenses and other items.
Why mix changes the margin
ASML’s product and service mix can move quarterly gross margin materially. Compare:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- EUV and DUV system mix and the timing of high-value shipments.
- Installed Base Management activity, including service and field options.
- Productivity upgrades and other upgrade work performed on systems already in the field.
- Manufacturing costs, learning-curve effects and supplier pricing.
- Shipment or acceptance timing that shifts higher- or lower-margin work between quarters.
- One-off items that may not recur.
ASML said Installed Base Management sales were €3.3 billion in Q3 2026 and that continued demand for productivity upgrades helped drive margin above guidance. Installed Base Management sales equal net service and field-option sales. This is why a high-margin quarter should not automatically be treated as a permanent run rate: the mix may change when systems and services are delivered in different proportions.
A practical margin test
- Compare the reported margin with the prior quarter and the company’s preceding guide.
- Check whether management attributes the variance to system mix, upgrades, services, manufacturing cost or a nonrecurring item.
- Look at Installed Base Management sales and system shipments together, because service-heavy quarters can have a different margin profile from system-heavy quarters.
- Use several quarters to establish a range before making a long-term margin assumption.
5. Read guidance as a range with assumptions
For Q4 2026, ASML guided total net sales to €14.2–15.2 billion, with gross margin around 57%. For full-year 2026, management guided sales of €44–45 billion and gross margin around 56%. It also guided approximately €1.2 billion of Q4 research and development expense and €0.4 billion of selling, general and administrative expense.
| Guidance period | Sales range or amount | Gross-margin guide | Other operating guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q4 2026 | €14.2–15.2 billion | Approximately 57% | R&D about €1.2 billion; SG&A about €0.4 billion |
| Full-year 2026 | €44–45 billion | Approximately 56% | Not stated in the cited release |
Compare old and new guidance
Write down the previous quarter’s range before reading the new one. Then compare the lower bound, upper bound, midpoint and margin assumption. A range raised at both ends generally signals greater confidence than a range widened only at the top. A flat sales range with a lower margin guide can indicate mix or cost pressure; a stable margin guide with a higher sales range suggests stronger expected volume or timing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Guidance is management’s current expectation, not a guarantee. The range embeds assumptions about customer orders, production capacity, shipment timing, currency, taxes, supply availability and the adoption of new systems. The midpoint is a useful analytical reference, but it is not an additional promise from ASML.
Read expense guidance with revenue guidance
R&D and SG&A guidance helps estimate operating leverage. If sales rise while planned operating expenses remain comparatively stable, profit can grow faster than revenue. If ASML increases development or commercial spending to support new systems and installed-base expansion, near-term leverage may be lower even when the long-term opportunity is attractive.
6. Use a repeatable quarter-to-quarter comparison
When two or more results packages are available, use the same worksheet every quarter. The following framework keeps demand, conversion, profitability, execution, outlook and risk separate.
| Question | Metrics to record | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Demand | Total bookings, EUV bookings when disclosed, backlog change | Are customers authorizing more equipment, and what mix are they choosing? |
| Conversion | Sales recognized, shipments or units, backlog realization | Is accepted demand turning into revenue at the expected pace? |
| Profitability | Gross margin, gross profit, Installed Base Management sales | Are mix, upgrades, services and costs supporting or pressuring margin? |
| Execution | Systems sold, service and field-option activity, R&D, SG&A | Can ASML manufacture, install and support the planned volume? |
| Outlook | Current-quarter and full-year ranges versus the prior release | Did management raise, maintain, narrow or lower expectations? |
| Risk | Order timing, cancellations, export controls, capacity, concentration and AI assumptions | What could prevent bookings or backlog from becoming the guided sales? |
Keep a separate column for facts and management explanations. For example, a higher margin is a fact; upgrade demand as the reason is management’s explanation that should be checked against Installed Base Management sales and the product mix.

A share-price reaction reflects the gap between reported results and what investors had already expected, not simply whether the numbers were positive. Without a verified consensus estimate and market-price data, do not claim that a particular movement had one definite cause.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe usual drivers investors weigh
- Sales and margin versus expectations: a record quarter can still disappoint if the market expected more.
- Bookings quality: total order intake, EUV share and the durability of customer authorizations matter.
- Backlog conversion: investors assess whether the order book can become revenue on schedule.
- Guidance: the new range may matter more than the completed quarter if it changes estimates for upcoming periods.
- Risk language: comments about export controls, capacity, cancellations or AI-investment durability can alter perceived uncertainty.
- Mix and margins: a sales beat with weaker expected margin can produce a different reaction from a sales beat accompanied by stable profitability.
Read the prepared remarks and transcript for changes in wording. Management’s description of customer forecasts, delivery timing or capacity can explain why the market treats two numerically similar quarters differently.

8. Put Q3 2026 into a complete reading
Q3 2026 combined strong reported execution with a forward-looking question: how much of the demand environment can ASML convert into systems and installed-base revenue under capacity and regulatory constraints? The release described record total sales of €11.7 billion, toward the high end of guidance, and attributed the execution to the ramp-up. It also said customers were increasing short- and medium-term equipment-demand forecasts, driven primarily by their views on the size and duration of AI-related investment.
That commentary should be read alongside the numerical sequence: recognized sales and margin first, then bookings and backlog, then the Q4 and full-year ranges. The statement about AI is a demand explanation and assumption, not a guarantee that investment will continue at the same pace. Test it against new bookings, EUV mix, backlog conversion and the risks listed in the release.
The FY2025 release had also described 2026 as another growth year, largely driven by a significant increase in EUV sales and growth in installed-base business sales. Comparing that expectation with the Q3 mix and guidance helps you judge whether the stated growth drivers are appearing in the reported business rather than relying on the headline sales number alone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →9. Risks that can invalidate an otherwise bullish reading
ASML’s forward-looking risks should be treated as part of the earnings analysis, not as boilerplate. The Q3 2026 release identifies:
- Semiconductor demand and the durability of AI-related investment.
- Production and supply-chain capacity.
- Order timing, cancellations and customer push-outs.
- Export controls and geopolitical developments.
- Currency movements and tax changes.
- Performance and adoption of new systems.
Map each risk to the metric it could affect. Demand weakness would first threaten bookings; a cancellation or push-out would affect backlog realization; supplier constraints could delay sales despite a healthy backlog; export controls could alter customer or regional mix; and a slower new-system adoption curve could affect both bookings and future margin expectations.
10. A practical earnings-reading checklist
- Open the latest release, financial statements, presentation and transcript from ASML’s results package.
- Confirm the reporting period, accounting basis and whether the statements are audited or unaudited.
- Record sales, gross profit, gross margin, net income and basic EPS.
- Compare those figures with at least the prior quarter and three earlier quarters when available.
- Record total net bookings and the EUV component when disclosed.
- Record backlog and ask how quickly it is expected to convert into sales.
- Review Installed Base Management sales, upgrades, service activity and system mix before judging margin quality.
- Write down the new quarterly and full-year guidance, including margin and expense assumptions.
- Compare each range with the previous release rather than with memory.
- List the risks that could disrupt orders, backlog conversion, production or margins.
- Only then assess what might explain an investor reaction, using verified market expectations and price data.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling bookings revenue: bookings are accepted orders, not recognized sales.
- Calling backlog guaranteed revenue: timing, cancellations, export controls and capacity can change realization.
- Annualizing one margin: mix and upgrades can make a quarter unusually high or low.
- Ignoring the EUV share: total bookings can hide an important change in product composition.
- Reading guidance as a target that must be met: it is a range based on current assumptions.
- Focusing only on the income statement: the order book and conversion pipeline often explain future quarters.
- Attributing a stock move to one headline: market expectations, guidance and risk language can outweigh the reported quarter.
A disciplined reading therefore asks five linked questions: what did ASML recognize, what did customers newly authorize, what accepted work remains, what mix produced the margin, and what assumptions support the next range? Answering them in that order gives a clearer picture than focusing on any one headline number.
