If you find a possible electronic funds transfer (EFT) error on a covered U.S. consumer account, contact the bank promptly: Regulation E generally sets a 60-day notice period measured from when the bank sends the statement that first shows the alleged error.
What a monthly bank activity statement tells you
A statement is a record of activity for a defined period, not necessarily a live view of the money available right now. For accounts covered by Regulation E, a bank generally must send a statement for each monthly cycle in which an EFT occurred and at least quarterly when no EFT occurred, subject to exceptions. See the CFPB’s Regulation E, § 1005.9.

The statement should show the balance at the beginning and end of the period. As the regulation puts it, the disclosure includes “The balance in the account at the beginning and at the close of the statement period.” That requirement applies in the relevant EFT statement context; account type and applicable rules matter.

- Confirm the account holder or account identifier and make sure the statement is for the account you intend to review.
- Note the start and end dates. Transactions just outside those dates may belong to the previous or next statement.
- Keep all pages, including transaction details, fee summaries and any explanations of codes.
- Protect the document: redact the full account number and other sensitive details before sharing it.
Read the summary balances and activity
Locate the opening balance, closing balance, deposits or other credits, withdrawals or other debits, and fees. Depending on the account and applicable disclosure rules, the statement may also show interest or additional fee information.
#1 Best Overall
Do not assume the statement’s closing balance equals the funds currently available to spend. A transaction can be authorized at one time and post later, and holds or posting timing can affect available funds. Statement layouts and available-balance labels are not universal.
Verify each transaction against your records
Compare each entry’s amount and date with receipts, check records, deposit confirmations, transfer confirmations, recurring-payment records and any register or spreadsheet you keep. Check credits as well as debits: a deposit can be missing, delayed or posted for an amount different from the receipt.

- Unfamiliar descriptions: A merchant’s trading name, a third party’s name or an abbreviated label may differ from the name you recognize. Ask the institution to explain an entry you cannot identify.
- Possible duplicates: Compare the dates, amounts and details before treating similar-looking entries as duplicate charges; one may be a temporary authorization or a separate transaction.
- Unexpected fees: Check the amount and description against the account’s fee information and your own records.
- Missing or mismatched activity: Look for deposits that do not appear, credits that differ from receipts, and statement entries absent from your personal records.
For covered EFTs, Regulation E specifies statement information such as the amount, date credited or debited, transfer and account type, applicable terminal location and third-party name, account number, applicable fees, account balances and inquiry contact information. The rule does not prescribe one terminology for transfer types, and information may be combined. The institution is not required to verify each transfer appearing on a periodic statement, so your own comparison remains important. See the CFPB’s § 1005.9 and official interpretation.

Opening balance + credits − debits − fees = closing balance
- Use the opening balance shown for this statement period.
- Add the credits listed for the period.
- Subtract debits and fees, taking care not to count a fee twice if it is already included among the debits.
- Compare your result with the statement’s closing balance.
Then compare the statement with your personal records. An item you entered before the period ended may not have posted until afterward, so separate timing differences from unexplained differences. If the arithmetic does not match, identify the first discrepancy and gather its date, amount, receipt or confirmation before contacting the bank.

A paper checkbook register, spreadsheet or financial software can help you keep your side of the comparison. The useful test is whether your record is complete and makes it easy to match transactions, recurring payments and fees—not which format you use. A register is optional and cannot establish that a transaction was authorized or correct.
What to do about a suspected EFT error
For a covered consumer EFT, the CFPB says the bank generally must receive notice within 60 days after it sends the statement that first shows the alleged error. The period is tied to the statement’s sent date, not simply the date you happen to review it. This rule is specific to covered EFT errors; do not assume the same deadline or process applies to checks, business accounts or every bank dispute. See CFPB Regulation E, § 1005.11.
Best Value
Regulation E’s definition of error includes unauthorized or incorrect EFTs, omitted transfers, certain institutional computational or bookkeeping errors involving EFTs, incorrect cash amounts dispensed at a terminal, certain inadequate transaction descriptions, and requests for relevant documentation or clarification. Whether a particular account or transaction is covered depends on the circumstances.
- Use the inquiry or error-notice contact details on the statement and follow the bank’s instructions for that account.
- Identify yourself and the account, explain why you believe there is an error, and give the transaction type, date and amount if known.
- Record when and how you reported it, and keep copies of written notices, receipts, confirmations and the bank’s response.
- If you report orally, be prepared for the bank to request written confirmation in some cases. The OCC recommends written notice and keeping a copy; see its guidance on errors on an EFT statement.
- For an account-specific dispute, check the deposit agreement and the bank’s directions.
OCC consumer guidance also addresses whether banks must send monthly statements for checking or savings accounts. Its page was last reviewed in April 2021, so consult the current Regulation E text for the covered EFT rule and check your account terms for details: OCC guidance on monthly statements.
