A volumizing brush dryer can leave hair frizzy when airflow is too strong, hair is tangled or divided into sections that are too large, or repeated heat exposure contributes to dry, rough lengths. Start with towel-dried, detangled hair, work in manageable sections, use the lowest effective heat and airflow, and keep the brush moving. If your model has a cool-shot setting, try finishing with it. The right settings and steps vary by device, so check the manual for your exact model.
Why a brush dryer can leave hair frizzy
Airflow and handling
Strong airflow and the way you guide the brush can affect the finish. Shark’s troubleshooting advice for its IQ Styling Brush is to lower airflow if the tool causes frizz; if frizz persists, it suggests brushing down the outside with the boar bristles and finishing with Cool Shot. That guidance applies to that product, not necessarily to every hot-air brush. SharkNinja’s IQ Styling Brush guidance.

Preparation and section size
Tangles and oversized sections make it harder to guide hair evenly around a brush. Rowenta advises towel-drying, detangling carefully, avoiding tangled hair, and working in individual strands a few centimetres wide. L’ange likewise recommends detangling, using manageable sections, and keeping the dryer moving. See Rowenta’s instructions and L’ange’s Le Volume directions.

Repeated high heat can contribute to dry, brittle, rough-feeling hair. L’Oréal Paris recommends choosing the lowest setting that achieves the style and avoiding repeated passes; Dyson also describes heat-damaged hair as potentially dry and frizzy. These are general care explanations, not a diagnosis of an individual’s hair. L’Oréal Paris heat-protectant guidance; Dyson’s hair-science page.

A practical routine to reduce frizz
- Remove excess water and detangle. Towel-dry first, then gently detangle before styling. Apply heat protectant according to its label, including whether it is intended for damp or dry hair and how it should be distributed. Rowenta’s preparation guidance is here; L’Oréal Paris explains label-directed use here.
- Work in manageable sections. Smaller sections are easier to guide over the brush than tangled or oversized ones. Choose a brush diameter suited to your hair length and the result you want.
- Start low and keep moving. Begin with the lowest heat and airflow that can achieve the style. Move the brush continuously instead of holding it against one spot, and avoid unnecessary repeat passes. L’Oréal Paris puts the principle plainly: “To protect your hair, it’s always best to choose the lowest heat setting that achieves your desired style.” A heat-protectant product is not a reason to use maximum heat.
- If frizz appears, reduce airflow. Shark recommends this for its IQ Styling Brush. If your device offers a cool shot, try it at the end; the exact control and procedure depend on the model.
- Stop if the appliance is damaged or subject to a safety notice. Check the exact model before using it again; see the safety section below.
What to compare if choosing a brush dryer
No feature guarantees a frizz-free result for every person. These specifications can help you find a tool that suits your routine; check the exact version and region before buying.

| Safety certification and notices | Check the product’s markings and search for notices covering its exact model. | Revlon states that the cited model has an ETL seal. A certification marking does not replace checking current safety notices for the exact product. Revlon. |
L’ange lists Le Volume as 125V, 60Hz, 1000W and advises starting at approximately 70% dry, keeping the brush moving, and finishing on the cool setting. These are that manufacturer’s specifications and directions, not independent test results. L’ange Le Volume.

Check for product-specific safety warnings
On August 13, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that several named hair dryer brushes lacking an integrated immersion-protection device posed electrocution and shock hazards. The warning identifies products including Jowenia/Haokaini and Tebru listings marked XRUI model XR-8801, among other listings, and urges consumers to stop using and destroy affected products. It is a warning about the named products, not all brush dryers. Check the CPSC’s current notices and match the notice to the exact model and listing before acting.
