Read an insurer’s quarterly report in layers: first establish the reporting period and accounting basis, then test premium growth, underwriting performance, catastrophe and reserve effects, investments, cash flow, and statutory capital. The headline net-income number is only the final result of those drivers. A useful reading order is the one used below because it separates recurring insurance performance from market movements and one-time events.
1. Identify exactly what you are reading
Start with the insurer’s investor-relations earnings release and its quarterly filing. For a U.S. public company, the Form 10-Q supplies the quarterly reporting framework and financial disclosures. Confirm the quarter-end date, the year-to-date period, the share count used for per-share figures, the accounting basis, and whether prior periods were restated.

Confirm the period
A report covering the three months ended June 30 is not interchangeable with a six-month year-to-date table in the same filing. Read both when available: the quarter shows the latest change, while year-to-date figures reduce the chance that a single storm, large claim, or transaction dominates your conclusion. Check whether comparisons use the same calendar quarter and whether the company changed its fiscal year.
Check share counts and restatements
Net income per share can change because of share repurchases, new issuance, or a different diluted-share calculation even when total earnings are unchanged. Look for basic and diluted shares, weighted-average shares, and any acquisition or discontinued-operation adjustments. A restatement, accounting-policy change, or reclassification can make the prior-year comparison appear to move when the underlying business did not.

Separate GAAP from statutory reporting
Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) are designed primarily to inform investors about performance and financial position. U.S. statutory accounting principles (SAP), overseen through state insurance regulation and NAIC reporting, emphasize conservative recognition, policyholder obligations, and available capital and surplus. GAAP net income answers a profitability question; statutory surplus and risk-based capital help answer whether the insurer has the financial resources to remain able to pay claims. Neither basis substitutes for the other.
2. Understand the premium engine before judging growth
Premium is the starting point for an insurer’s revenue and exposure, but growth by itself says little about quality. Examine written premium, earned premium, rate changes, retention, exposure, new business, geography, line-of-business mix, acquisitions, and reinsurance changes.
Written versus earned premium
Written premium is the amount of policies bound during the period, including the effect of renewals and new policies. Earned premium is the portion recognized as coverage is provided. A fast increase in written premium may not appear fully in current-quarter earned premium because policies earn over their coverage period. Conversely, earned premium can remain elevated after written premium slows.
Decompose the growth
Ask what caused the change:
- Price: higher rates on renewing policies can increase premium without adding customers or insured assets.
- Exposure: more vehicles, payroll, property values, miles driven, or other insured units can raise premium even if rates are unchanged.
- Retention: keeping more renewing policyholders supports volume; falling retention can make a rate increase look healthier than the underlying book.
- New business: growth from new accounts may carry different risk and acquisition costs than renewals.
- Mix: a shift between personal, commercial, specialty, property, casualty, or geographic businesses changes expected losses and capital needs.
- Acquisitions and disposals: purchased or sold operations can change reported premium without an organic improvement.
- Reinsurance: changes in ceded premiums, quota-share arrangements, or catastrophe protection alter both reported premium and risk retained.
Read management’s rate, exposure, and retention commentary alongside the premium table. Premium growth that comes mainly from rate can be positive if pricing now covers expected loss costs and expenses; growth from underpriced exposure can worsen future results.
3. Read the underwriting ratios correctly
Underwriting ratios measure whether the insurer’s insurance operations made money before investment income. The core measures are the loss ratio, expense ratio, and combined ratio.
| Measure | Basic calculation | What it tells you | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loss ratio | Incurred losses plus loss-adjustment expenses divided by earned premium | How much premium was consumed by claims and the costs of handling those claims | Definitions can differ by company; verify whether catastrophe losses, prior-year development, or other items are included. |
| Expense ratio | Underwriting expenses divided by earned premium | The cost of acquiring, servicing, and administering policies | Acquisition-cost treatment, commissions, and consolidation choices can affect comparability. |
| Combined ratio | Loss ratio plus expense ratio | The underwriting result before investment income | Company-reported adjusted, accident-year, or underlying versions may exclude specified items. |
Use the combined ratio as an underwriting test
The combined ratio is not a measure of total corporate profitability. In the definition cited in American International Group’s 2025 Form 10-Q, a combined ratio below 100 indicates underwriting income and a ratio above 100 indicates an underwriting loss. A ratio of 95 therefore means that, under that filing’s definitions, claims and underwriting expenses consumed 95 units for every 100 units of earned premium.
Investment income is outside the combined ratio. An insurer can report an underwriting loss but still post positive net income if its investment portfolio produces enough income, or report an underwriting profit while market losses reduce overall earnings.

Reported, accident-year, and underlying versions
Insurers often publish more than one ratio. A reported ratio generally includes the period’s catastrophe losses and the effect of changes to prior accident-year reserves. An accident-year ratio focuses on claims associated with accidents occurring in the current year, while an underlying or adjusted ratio may remove catastrophe losses, prior-year development, or other items the company identifies as unusual.
Do not treat an adjusted ratio as a universal industry standard. Read the reconciliation that defines what the insurer removed and whether the same exclusions are used in every period. Two companies can both report an “underlying combined ratio” while excluding different items.
4. Strip out unusual effects without losing sight of the reported result
After reading the reported income statement and combined ratio, identify events that could make the quarter unusually high or low. Common items include catastrophe losses, prior-year reserve development, unusually large individual claims, reinsurance recoveries, commutations, restructuring costs, legal items, and tax effects.
Catastrophe losses
Hurricanes, wildfires, floods, severe convective storms, and other declared events can create a large loss ratio in one quarter. Find the catastrophe amount after reinsurance, the affected business lines and regions, and whether the figure includes loss-adjustment expenses. Compare the event with the company’s disclosed catastrophe budget or expected volatility only if the company provides that framework; do not create an industry benchmark from a single quarter.

Prior-year reserve development
Reserve development is the change in the estimated cost of claims from earlier accident years. Favorable development releases reserves and improves the current period; adverse development strengthens reserves and reduces earnings. A quarter with favorable development can look better even when new claims from the current accident year are deteriorating.
Other one-time or non-underwriting items
Check footnotes and management reconciliations for large claims, ceded-reinsurance recoveries, commutations, restructuring, litigation, and tax-rate changes. Reinsurance recoveries may reduce the net catastrophe loss but can also raise questions about the credit quality and collectability of the reinsurers. A commutation can produce a gain or loss while changing future recoveries and obligations.
For each disclosed item, ask two separate questions: what was the reported effect on earnings and the combined ratio, and what would the quarter have looked like without it? Keep the company’s own reconciliation intact rather than substituting an estimate.

5. Test whether underwriting performance is recurring
Current accident-year results are the best starting point for judging the book being written now. Compare the current accident-year loss ratio with the same measure in the prior quarter, the prior-year quarter, and year-to-date. Then examine prior-year development separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLook for loss-cost signals
Management commentary can reveal whether claim frequency, claim severity, repair costs, medical inflation, litigation, or weather is driving movement. A stable frequency measure with rising severity points to a different pricing response than an increase in both frequency and severity. If the insurer discusses rate adequacy or loss-cost trends, compare that commentary with renewal rate changes and retention.
Use a multi-quarter pattern
One release cannot establish a trend. Build a simple history of reported, accident-year, and underlying loss and combined ratios, along with catastrophe losses and reserve development. Repeated adverse development is a warning that earlier pricing or reserving assumptions were too optimistic. Repeated favorable development can indicate conservatism, but it can also mask weak current-year underwriting if the current accident-year ratio is worsening.
6. Read the investment section separately
Insurers invest premiums until claims and expenses are paid, so investments can materially affect net income even when underwriting is stable. Start with net investment income, then examine realized and unrealized gains or losses, duration, credit quality, impairments, and interest-rate effects.
Net investment income
Net investment income generally reflects recurring interest, dividends, and other portfolio income. Relate changes to average invested assets, portfolio yield, reinvestment rates, and asset mix. A higher yield may reflect favorable reinvestment opportunities, but it can also come with more credit or duration risk.

Realized gains and losses arise when investments are sold or otherwise recognized under the applicable accounting rules. Unrealized changes reflect market-value movements on holdings that remain in the portfolio, subject to the insurer’s accounting treatment. Rising interest rates can reduce the market value of existing fixed-income securities, while improving the yield on new investments. Falling rates can have the opposite effects. Separate these market-value changes from recurring investment income before evaluating operating performance.
Portfolio risk
Review duration relative to the expected timing of claim payments, credit ratings and concentrations, impairments, and any mismatch between assets and liabilities. A long asset duration may increase sensitivity to rate changes; concentrated exposure to one issuer, sector, or asset class can increase credit risk. Investment gains cannot compensate indefinitely for inadequate pricing or reserves.

7. Check cash flow and balance-sheet quality
Compare operating cash flow with GAAP net income. Strong earnings accompanied by weak or negative operating cash flow deserve investigation, although timing effects can occur because premium collections, claim payments, and reinsurance settlements do not happen simultaneously.
Receivables and recoverables
Inspect premium receivables for growth, aging, and collection commentary. Review reinsurance recoverables, collateral, disputed amounts, and the financial strength of counterparties. A reported net loss may look manageable only because recoveries are expected; the balance sheet shows whether those recoveries are readily collectible.

Look at debt maturities, interest expense, holding-company liquidity, and the ability to move cash to regulated subsidiaries. Insurance subsidiaries may face restrictions on dividends to the parent. A company can report adequate consolidated cash while a regulated entity has limited flexibility.
Asset-liability duration
Compare the duration and liquidity of invested assets with the expected timing and uncertainty of claim payments. Long-tail casualty claims require a different asset-liability approach from short-tail property claims. A balance sheet with adequate capital but poor liquidity can still be vulnerable during a period of rapid claim payments or collateral calls.

For U.S. insurers, NAIC statutory accounting is intended to support consistent reporting and help regulators determine whether an insurer is financially sound or solvent. SAP places emphasis on conservative recognition, policyholder obligations, and capital and surplus rather than solely on investor-oriented earnings.
Review statutory surplus, risk-based capital information when disclosed, dividend capacity, and trends in capital after catastrophe losses or reserve strengthening. Compare these measures with the risk profile of the business, including catastrophe exposure, long-tail liabilities, reinsurance dependence, and investment concentrations.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not infer solvency from GAAP net income alone. GAAP and statutory statements can differ because assets, liabilities, deferred items, and valuation rules are treated differently. Use GAAP to understand reported performance and statutory information to evaluate the regulated insurance entities’ ability to absorb stress and continue paying policyholders.

9. Compare insurers on a consistent basis
Peer comparisons are useful only after definitions and exposures are aligned. Build comparisons around the following axes:
| Comparison axis | Questions to align |
|---|---|
| Premium growth and mix | Are changes organic or acquisition-driven? How much came from rate, exposure, retention, new business, geography, and line mix? |
| Underwriting | Are you comparing reported ratios with reported ratios, or underlying ratios with underlying ratios? Are expense and loss definitions consistent? |
| Catastrophes and reserves | Did each company disclose catastrophe losses on a net or gross basis? How much prior-year development affected the period? |
| Investments | Do portfolios have similar duration, credit quality, asset mix, and exposure to realized or unrealized market changes? |
| Cash flow and balance sheet | Are operating cash flow, receivables, reinsurance recoverables, debt, and liquidity measured on comparable bases? |
| Statutory capital | Are surplus, capital ratios, and dividend restrictions reported for the same regulated entities and period? |
Use the prior quarter, the same quarter a year earlier, year-to-date results, and any company guidance. Preserve each insurer’s reconciliation for non-GAAP or underlying metrics. Ranking companies by a single combined-ratio figure without aligning catastrophe exposure, business mix, geography, and definitions can produce a misleading result.
10. A worked example of separating the drivers
Suppose an insurer reports a 99% combined ratio for a quarter. In an illustrative calculation, the company says catastrophe losses added six percentage points and favorable prior-year reserve development reduced the ratio by three points. Removing both disclosed effects gives an illustrative underlying ratio of 96%: 99 minus 6, plus 3. This arithmetic does not predict the company’s actual result; it shows why the direction of each adjustment matters.
Next, separate the 96% into its loss and expense components. If the loss ratio is 65% and the expense ratio is 31%, underwriting performance is 96% before investment income. Then inspect whether the 65% loss ratio is current accident-year or reported, whether the 31% expense ratio includes unusual costs, and whether the company defines the figures differently from peers.
Finally, add the investment review. Net investment income may improve net income, while an unrealized bond loss may reduce it. The underwriting conclusion remains 96% in this illustration; the net-income conclusion depends on investment results, taxes, financing, and other corporate items.
11. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling premium growth proof of quality: require rate, exposure, retention, mix, and profitability evidence.
- Treating the combined ratio as total profit: remember that investment income is excluded.
- Using an adjusted ratio without its reconciliation: record every exclusion and its accounting period.
- Ignoring reserve development: separate current accident-year performance from changes to earlier years.
- Explaining every bad quarter with catastrophes: check whether underlying loss costs, pricing, or expenses also moved.
- Comparing GAAP earnings with statutory capital as if they were the same measure: use each for the question it is designed to answer.
- Relying on one quarter: build a multi-quarter and year-to-date view.
- Overlooking cash conversion: reconcile operating cash flow, receivables, recoverables, liquidity, and debt with reported earnings.
- Assuming peer ratios are interchangeable: align business mix, geography, catastrophe exposure, periods, and definitions first.
12. A practical reading sequence
- Open the quarterly filing and earnings release; mark the quarter, year-to-date period, share count, accounting basis, and restatements.
- Read premium tables and management commentary; classify growth as rate, exposure, retention, new business, mix, acquisition, disposal, or reinsurance-related.
- Record loss, expense, reported combined, accident-year, and underlying ratios, including the company’s definitions.
- List catastrophe losses, prior-year reserve development, large claims, reinsurance recoveries, commutations, restructuring, legal, and tax effects.
- Compare current accident-year results with prior periods and inspect claim-frequency, severity, and loss-cost commentary.
- Review net investment income, realized and unrealized gains or losses, duration, credit quality, impairments, and interest-rate sensitivity separately from underwriting.
- Check operating cash flow against net income, then inspect premium receivables, reinsurance recoverables, debt, liquidity, and asset-liability duration.
- Review statutory surplus and capital information for the regulated insurance entities, and note dividend restrictions or other limits on financial flexibility.
- Compare the insurer with prior periods and peers only after normalizing periods, exposures, mix, geography, and definitions.
The result should be a driver-based judgment: whether current pricing and claims trends support recurring underwriting profitability, how much the quarter was shaped by catastrophes or reserve changes, whether investments add sustainable income or market risk, and whether statutory capital and liquidity can absorb adverse outcomes.
